State Championships a Success with an Unfortunate Exclusion


The South Australian Junior Soccer Association State Championships were once again a great success with 465 boys and girls participating in the 3-day carnival held at Adelaide Shores.

Representative teams from Adelaide Hills, Broken Hill, Noarlunga and Districts, North West, Pt Pirie, Riverland, Sunraysia, Western Border and Whyalla Junior Soccer Associations competed in fine conditions. The event was an excellent example of the healthy state Football is in throughout the state and nationally.

“The three day event was a great success and attracted local, regional and interstate players and parents. A number of boys and girls were identified for development programs by FFSA Technical Director Airton Andrioli and Game Development Manager John Mundy, Cristiano Dos Santos and Tiarn Powell. The event also provided an ideal opportunity to support and educate young referees.” Football Federation SA (FFSA) Chief Executive Officer Michael Carter said.

Adelaide Shores again proved to be an ideal location for the State Championships with 7 pitches, on site accommodation for regional travellers and convenience for local associations.

A noticeable exclusion from the event, however was the Elizabeth & Districts Junior Soccer Association (EDJSA). The EDJSA declined an invitation from Football Federation SA to compete in the tournament who made application to the SAJSA for an exemption that would allow a non-affiliated body to compete given the registration of players to the FFSA.

“A genuine approach was made to the executive of the EDJSA to meet and compete in the championships, however the offer was declined on both fronts which is unfortunate. It would be great to see players, coaches and referees afforded the same opportunities to compete in state based events and receive formal accreditation.

"We will begin exploring opportunities that will provide future opportunities despite the association’s lack of appetite to discuss a future partnership.” stated Michael Carter.

Junior affiliation to the national and state body costs between $24 and $32 per player and includes insurance cover. Based on a twenty-week season that equates to between $1.20 to $1.60 per player, per week based on what level of insurance the association chooses to take up.

Annoys me this first thread saying in essence poor EDJSA winding people up.

Kids are playing in a comp that is ran well and has been for many years.
No need to join a comp that is littered with examples of ineptitude.
The refusal to meet shows more about the lack of trust they have towards the FFSA, and tbh reading
some of the posts on here it's hypocritical that you guys think it's a disgrace that they didn't take part when in other threads you can't say a good thing about the administration of the FFSA!

Good on the EDJSA, they don't need the FFSA and have made it clear the best junior comp in the state is doing quite well thank you.

Until the ffsa wakes up and fixes the costs and funding model which in reality is using junior fees to fund itself , senior clubs and the FFA , E & D, and the SASSL will never join and why should it.

In my time eg 1960's to 1970's playing jpl was free.
Today it can cost from approx $800pa plus for under 10's upwards.
Two , three children in the family to play can cost parents a fortune .
I know of parents who cannot send their children to play and their fathers were good soccer players in their day. It is not only the cost of fees but boots and transport for two or more children .

The other issue that will rise eventually and some Greek background clubs are tied to these grounds.
Is the clubs that are leasing and will lease these new grounds and paying fees to use them. Eg West Beach and The Parks and later Kilburn. If assumption the ffsa is collecting these fees and thinks clubs can afford rising big fees I can predict trouble in sustainability into the future for clubs using them.
Do not forget the funding came from SA govt to build these grounds as community assets for the community to use that is what they are for not cash cows.

Through compromise and negotiation this could have been addressed years ago just not EDJSA.

As I said, the EDJSA don't need the FFSA to come in ruin a well ran system.

The history of top end soccer admin in SA and Australia is not good.
We have had unnecessary ethnic name bans, unsustainable high junior fees, many okder nsl clubs liquidated, ground fees not cheap but super costly, npl clubs are still running in the back of high junior fees and philanthropic cash donors ...........
The ffsa and FFA just sit back and think grass roots soccer is booming and all is ok.
A total restructure is needed ASAP.

Wasn't it just an invitation to join in the state championships? I agree the lack of trust would have put off the e&d committee to meet, but if was just about the weekend championships then that would be disappointing as it would have given the better players within the e&d an opportunity to test themselves against the best from the other regions. Like they did for many,many years until the ffsa took stranglehold of all bar e&d and saasl. If the ffsa want more than that e.g (joining their football family/gaining their $$$), then no, well done e&d, otherwise I believe for the sake of the best players within the e&d competition they should at least be talking/ thinking about this option.

E&DJSA had their own tournament in Broken Hill. Perhaps that was organised before the invitation was extended?

Some of the div 1 SAASL clubs pay more for players than NPL clubs.
