Interestingly, there's not a single match up of an all reserves or all prems game in the first round of the cup. You would expect there not to be any upsets.
However, should Sturts injuries / illness / absence problems persist this weekend, the Metro Reserves v Sturt Prems game could produce the upset of the round.

Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
More like upset of the year, if it happens. Going into this season, I considered Sturt a top 3 finisher with the quality players they picked up in addition to the players they already had.Worthless Gobemouche wrote:West Adelaide vs West Adelaide Reserves

Can't see it happening though. Sturt should be way too strong even if missing some players, against a reserve side, albeit good one at that.
Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
I'd be willing to say that Metro Reserves will give Sturt Prems a run for their money. Almost match of the 1st Round. Can see a 4+ goal game to be honest.

Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
A couple of close finishes ( as predicted by JS and yours truly ) but all games went in favour of the PL teams and so they should.
A couple of points were raised by a few people at the game I was at yesterday.
1. Whats the point of including the reserves in with the Prems ?
2. Where were the FFSA sides ? On that, yes I know there was the option to enter reserves sides or not to as some clubs chose but what does it say if the FFSA chose not to enter atleast one side in the cup competition ?
3. It's nice to play for a bit of silverware and congratulations will always go to the eventual winner, but i'm struggling to see the relevance of the cup when it's this watered down version.
As for who writes by cabernet ? All opinions offered by this poster are my own and are simply that, opinions. I am simply offering topics based around the Women's game which are there to promote awareness and to expose the game in a way which has been missing for several seasons.

Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
I know the idea of a finals series, rather than a cup competition, has been considered in recent years- not sure about the pro's and con's of each...
Also, don't know what the impact of the implementation of the WNPL will be- with national standardisation of the women's competition there may be a change in the cup...I know the goal is to have a national cup competition for the women, like the one pioneered last year in the men's game. This may mean that all states have similar playoff structures...
I think that one rationale for the inclusion of the reserves has been that they pay the same fees and should be able to participate in the cup, and have wanted to in the past...
The inclusion of Reserve sides in the prems cup is problematic- the draw is done randomly. If top Pems sides get drawn against each other in the early rounds (as City and Metro did a few years back) then there are complaints that the cup is over after the first round, where if Prems sides get drawn against reserve sides then the early rounds are too one-sided. If you take all of the reserves sides out of the cup then there are only 8 teams and a cup competition hardly makes sense. There also aren't enough teams in the competition, I don't think, to have the reserves sides play a round before the Prems sides enter the competition...Don't know what the answer is.
BTW, none of the development teams are in their respective cup competitions...it's not just the U15's.

so 9 - 0 shows a prems team being pressed? 7 -2 shows a prems team being pressed?Fitball wrote:All the reserve teames pressed all the prem teams, there could've been an upset at any park
It now seems a little pointless having had the reserves teams in the same cup.
The best cup was when they had it grouped in pool stages and it was a round robin style. Meant that teams didn't have to rely on one good game, but rather could prove their worth over the course of 3 or 4 games.

Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
Pretty sure it was 2006 & I think it lasted for a grand total of one year... because obviously this structure causes less headaches for FFSA...
One elimination round and then quarter finals... what's even the point?!

Best concept was when we had a group stage of prem clubs only and the Reserves had their own cup competition.
Worked well and most were happy, especially the Reserves.
Don't know why it was changed but current structure of having reserves play against Prem sides (including their own Prem sides) under Prem rules (i.e. no interchange) is just farcical.
Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
Just be thankful that they don't follow the Cup rules that they have in Melbourne.
All the women's teams from Prems down to the lowest division are all put in the same pool....
One of the teams a couple of weeks ago got beaten 25 - nil - (Prems vs Divison 6, I think)
At least the way it is in Adelaide, some of the lower teams may have a chance to go higher in the competition...

I didn't think it would be allowed to have 2 teams from 1 club in the same comp?scipio africanus wrote:Agree Ball Girl.ball_girl wrote:so 9 - 0 shows a prems team being pressed? 7 -2 shows a prems team being pressed?Fitball wrote:All the reserve teames pressed all the prem teams, there could've been an upset at any park

Well Paul welcome to the world of the Prems/Reserve cup!
West Adelaide played against each other.
Looks like some clubs elected not to enter 2 teams, but it was definitely allowed!

Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
Wow. If you played your own ressies do you think if they were up with 10 mins to go there would be a couple of 'dubious' goals for the seniors to keep them in the cup? You certainly wouldn't bet on an upset that's for sure.ball_girl wrote:Well Paul welcome to the world of the Prems/Reserve cup!

Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
This system needs to be scrapped as early as next season.
Totally unfair and ridiculous.
How does this improve Women's Football let alone players in the reserves knowing they will play one or maybe two games at that's it. They know they will never make the finals.
I wonder who from the FFSA decided this system was great for women's football.

Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
In WA they have a State League Cup - For premier league and Division 1 (no reserves teams play in this as they are regarded as part of one squad) and a Metro Cup (for metro Div 1 down to Div 6)
The competition is split into:
State League which has 2 divisions (8 in prems & 10 in Div 1) - each club must have a 1st team and reserves. This is the competitive league with no relegation out of State league into Metro Div (this enables those clubs that want to play competitively time to consolidate). To get into State league you have to apply and meet certain criteria.
and
Metro league (6 divisions) - with promotion and relegation

Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
So what does it tell us about our premier league standard if reserves team can press like someone said previously?
Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
Not a lot. One would hope that the Reserves - ie the girls who would be called upon to play prems in the case of injury or lack of players - would be able to keep a close game to a prems team. The expected results is that the prems would win of course, but it should never be a complete flogging.sportsbird wrote:So what does it tell us about our premier league standard if reserves team can press like someone said previously?

Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
I think that the quality of a club's reserves side reflects the depth of the player pool. City and Metro are pretty deep clubs, so their reserves sides would be stronger than other clubs who don't necessarily have as many good players.

Re: Women's Premier Cup - Round 1
Also depends at what point in the 'cycle' a club's reserves might be at (ie. is this the first year a bunch of younger girls have been selected in the senior set-up, or is the group consisting mainly of older girls that no longer wish to push at a PL level but stay at the club).juniorsupporter wrote:I think that the quality of a club's reserves side reflects the depth of the player pool. My personal opinion is have pre-season cups broken into Prem groups, D1-D2 groups, D3-D4 groups, D5-Collegiate. Then have an all-encompassing Fed Cup during the season where Prems down to D2 have a bye until the 2nd or 3rd round. Better for the overall development of all clubs and all girls in the State (eg. Thomas Love in the FFA Cup last year).
