Like it. We tried this a few times in the old amateur team I played for in the 80's. Problem was it took us about 30 seconds to "sprint" up the field and the sweeper usually over hit the lob!

It worked for them...still took some good skills to set up the goal....whats's the issue.
How often do you see sides keeping possesion in the middle and at the back only to end up knocking it back to the keeper who pumps it 80 metres upfield.

Pretty sure the long ball was a staple of the Liverpool sides of late 70's and 80's...

If you ever saw Liverpool in action in those days you would realise the error of your claims.

Sure, they did hit some long balls but they were usually long passes of notable accuracy - that is not long ball football - it is an excellent style of football that made them the best team in Europe for many years.

Long ball football is when the ball is just pumped aimlessly up the field with no thought of who it is gong to.

When RM or Barca hit long passes it is simply copying the style perfected by Liverpool.

May be the assumption is incorrect but that is how the English game of that era is thought off.
Stereotypical of the English game from my perspective and I did grow up with Match of The Day on the ABC.
