this place would go into meltdown if that goal had been scored by an English team.

Surely the English invented this tactic. It was a staple of their game in the 70-80'sGod is an Englishman wrote:this place would go into meltdown if that goal had been scored by an English team.

Like it. We tried this a few times in the old amateur team I played for in the 80's. Problem was it took us about 30 seconds to "sprint" up the field and the sweeper usually over hit the lob!

It worked for them...still took some good skills to set up the goal....whats's the issue.
How often do you see sides keeping possesion in the middle and at the back only to end up knocking it back to the keeper who pumps it 80 metres upfield.
Love the directness

Pretty sure the long ball WASN'T a staple of the Liverpool sides of late 70's and 80's...BAGGIO 15 wrote:Surely the English invented this tactic. It was a staple of their game in the 70-80'sGod is an Englishman wrote:this place would go into meltdown if that goal had been scored by an English team.

If you ever saw Liverpool in action in those days you would realise the error of your claims.
Sure, they did hit some long balls but they were usually long passes of notable accuracy - that is not long ball football - it is an excellent style of football that made them the best team in Europe for many years.
Long ball football is when the ball is just pumped aimlessly up the field with no thought of who it is gong to.
When RM or Barca hit long passes it is simply copying the style perfected by Liverpool.

I may have tarred some with the brush of others.
May be the assumption is incorrect but that is how the English game of that era is thought off.
Stereotypical of the English game from my perspective and I did grow up with Match of The Day on the ABC.
Just how I remember it, Liverpool aside.

My mistake, was meant to read "WASN'T"... am a Liverpool fan as was trying to show that the passing game of today was actually around 30 years ago... stupid try to post before the boss sees you're not working!!!

Even if that was true, it obviously worked. I mean 3 european cups. Would have been more if uefa hadn't got scared of the English dominance. The Kings Jesta wrote:Pretty sure the long ball was a staple of the Liverpool sides of late 70's and 80's...BAGGIO 15 wrote:Surely the English invented this tactic. Should have been the Toffees winning a cup or two with the brilliant team they had.

Dixie Dean was hailed by another Mersey legend, Liverpool’s Bill Shankly, as “belonging in the company of the supremely great, like Beethoven, Rembrandt and Shakespeare.”
