Right to appeal an incorrect second yellow?

Post by ontheblackburner »

Forumites,

The most bizarre thing happened on Sunday. One of our players was incorrectly shown a second yellow in our match, after the referee assumed that he had blocked the goalkeeper from kicking the ball out.

Basically, the keeper ran to the edge of his box and went to boot the ball up field but instead kicked the ball into the back of his own player. The ref assumed our player had blocked the kick and showed him a second yellow, despite that player being nowhere near the goalkeeper at the time.

Neither the linesperson nor any opposition players thought it appropriate to intervene and the player was sent off, incorrectly. (To be fair, I don't blame the PHE players. At 2-0 down, they probably saw it as a chance to get back into the game.)

Are there any rights of appeal in situations likes this?

(PS: I’ll just add that this is a personal question and do not speak for my club)

If it was signed then there's no chance.

i was the defender nearest to the incident and while i agree it was a harsh yellow you do have your facts wrong. the player said he shouted at his own player (which i believe he did) and the ref thought he had shouted at him so booked him for that. there are no grounds for appeal against yellow cards in any league as far as i am aware, only for straight red cards. also i believe in this instance the ref would still stand by his decision and still believe the verbal was at him.

it was an unfortunate send off but you would hardly expect any opposition player to come to your players defence, none of his own team mates really argued with the ref about it. besides after that it looked more like we had less players anyway.

The ref had the yellow out ready to go before he "changed his story" about why the booking was happening according to our players.

Yes the team sheet was signed etc but just curious as it was an obvious error.

facts are simple on this one.

FIFA's stance: You can only appeal a yellow card if it's a case of mistaken identity. If you appeal on this basis you must provide the name of the player who should have been booked instead.

SAASL's stance: Even if you appeal a red card (whcih you can't because of the above) you still have to serve a minimum one game suspension and the normal punishmenht for 2 yellows is a one game suspension.

This would not have made a difference.

thats is true but i was just making the point that i don't see why anyone would expect a phe player to defend a florina player being sent off especially when no florina players were defending him.

being the closest person to the incident i thought it took the ref a while to actually get his card out and i didn't hear two stories from the ref just the one that i mentioned. i thought the ref didn't have to bad a game and we have definitely had worse. if anything i thought most of the curious decisions in the second half went florinas way, other than the send off of course.
