Re: confederations cup
Six group games on SBS, plus the semis and the Final. But good to hear it's all on ESPN.
Edit - I'm seeing nothing in the ESPN guide. Don't think it's on.

The usual suspects, the usual cynics on this forum will devalue this tournament, but the Confed Cup has always been a reasonable dress-rehearsal by the next host 1 year out from the World Cup, featuring all the big boys from each FIFA Confederation..

Uruguay good value. They'll make the semi and if they face Brazil rkn they've got their measure.
Mexico have been junk for the last year, don't think they'll get anything out of Italy and Brazil.
If anything, can see Japan surprising the two likely more than Mexico.
Australia's record could be at risk when Spain plays Tahiti.

dont think so, Italy drew 2-2 with them in a pre-tournament friendly.....although the c team played for Gli Azzurri!

Re: confederations cup
It's a nothing comp that the players don't want to be part of, and their cubs despise.
It has much meaning as the Champions Trophy in cricket which is going on now. Even the Aussie players don't want to be part of it, Watson ensuring he doesn't waste energy batting, Warner wanting more of a break etc...
3 weeks of glorified friendlies when players should be resting.
Without Googling, I bet no-one knows the past winners and runners up from the previous 3 comps!

Some valid points, L & H. But FIFA throws coin at it and serious Nations seem to continue to treat it as a 1-year-out dress rehearsal. Forget Tahiti.laurel and hardy wrote:It's a nothing comp that the players don't want to be part of, and their cubs despise.

But look at big boys Spain, Uruguay, Italy & host Brazil. And France and England also played friendlies out there against 2014 hosts Brazil so they could experience the conditions too, before next year's Finals.

Brazil beat the US in 2009, Brazil beat Argentina (I think) in 2005 and I reckon in 2003 Cameroon won, just after Marc Vivien Foe died.laurel and hardy wrote:It's a nothing comp that the players don't want to be part of, and their cubs despise.

Only good thing about the Confed Cup for those in it is that you get experience ahead of the World Cup in Brazilian conditions. As a - big - negative, players don't get as much of a break. Thinking of somebody like Pirlo, who could use this time to recharge given that next year will be his third straight summer playing a competition. Plus, we need him to be fit and firing around March/April.

Uruguay/Brazil? (Only one of them won a major trophy)
Tahiti?
Mexico?
Nigeria?
Japan?
Re: confederations cup
Why so many Q marks?
6 of those 8 won their confederation championship.
Brazil are the hosts and Italy represent UEFA was Spain are dual holders.

Because I was asking the question of which major tournaments they had won to be there. The Kop wrote:Why so many Q marks?

So, it seems that 75% of the teams hadn't won a major trophy to be in this trophy making a mockery of ozzie owl's point.

Really, what did italy win?
Uruguay/Brazil? (Only one of them won a major trophy) Uruguay Copa America and Brasil Hosts
Tahiti? >> Oceania Champions
Mexico? > Central American Champions
Nigeria? > Cup of African Nations Champions
Japan?[/quote] > Asian Cup
Because Spain were already WC Winners, Italy got through as runners up and Euro reps
Its a simple equation really.
