A new club for the Mawson Lakes area

Post by Michael - MLSC »

G'day everyone! My name's Mike, I'm looking to put a team together for the Mawson Lakes area to enter the league, all going well, in 2014. This club would be a friendly, family oriented, community based club, that would be absolutely welcoming of everyone from all backgrounds and walks of life. We have some great facilities in Mawson Lakes, it's the biggest suburb in Adelaide, we have a uni campus, schools, businesses, community organisations etc to draw players from and I beleive Mawsons is screaming out for a strong, welcoming team.

I've played for a new startup club before, so to that extent I know what's involved with starting up a club (grants/sponsorship, recruiting players/coaches, getting kits, securing a ground etc etc), however I've never actually done it myself. I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice, tips, mistakes to avoid, or ideas that I could take on board when forming this club. At the moments, the club is basically at the foetus stage. It's not much more than an idea in my head, but do already a few interested players and some logo/kit ideas. I know that starting a club from square one won't be easy, and will be expensive, but it's something I've decided to do and I'm in it for the long haul!

Also if anyone from the Mawson Lakes area (or anywhere else) would like to get involved and lend a hand, or join the club in any capacity, you're more than welcome! Just PM me or post here if you're keen!

Thanks so much in advance for the assistance, it's much appreciated! - Mike

do bosna (if they are back?) still play on the footy oval on a very very small pitch?

if so then maybe look elsewhere for a pitch as it doesn't work there, way too small

Hey mate, yes I beleive Bosna do play on that pitch, so I've been looking at the college or uni for pitches. I'm also unsure as to wether Bosna are back or not, if not then there's a huge gap where there aren't any local clubs at all. Also, even if they are back, Bosna is more of an ethnic based club (which is fine), whereas the club I'm looking to form will be more welcoming to everybody from all backgrounds, and will be an overall friendlier club. It will represent Mawson Lakes as a community and as a suburb, as opposed to any one cultural group. Also, it will be a club that persues good sportmanship and community spirit. The type of stuff that got Bosna in hot water would simply be unheard of at the new ML club.

It's early days at the moment though!

Hav you read any of the posts above?

He wants a "Mawson lakes" club... Not ethnic based... Community spirit... Etc...

Can you suggest a Mawson lakes club that is not ethnic based?

I believe Bosna are looking at other grounds to base themselves, so Mawsons would be available.

Thanks for the replies guys. Basically as stated, i'm looking a building a club from the ground up that would hold a much wider community appeal. There are a few other players here that are keen to play but aren't too. sure about Bosna, also, by the time the team is set up, work should be complete on the new mawson lakes sports precinct that will have 2 proper soccer pitches, so we'll be able to use that as our home base while the footy, cricket and bosna teams can have the oval. I know a mawson lakes team has been attempted before, but I reckon, if done right and with patience, this one will succeed necause we'll have the right infrustructure by then, and theres defimately a market for it here too.

There a new development going on at Mawson Lake in so much as they are building some new sport facilities, including change rooms and sporting fields to replace part of the golf course closest to Endeavour College. Primarily to cater for the college but may be opportunity for clubs to use. Looks like a soccer pitch is included. They are also re-developing the golf course to replace the lost holes and to improve the course overall.
The plans are here

I run around the lake a few times a week and never had issues with mosquitoes. Maybe they don't like the taste of me...

I'm not too sure about the train thing, I moved here way after the station was built, and catch the train to work and back everyday. The northerners aren't so bad as long as you make no sudden movements and don't look them in the eye. I'm only joking, I reckon they're fine. Some of our future players may come from that way one day.

In regards to Saturday or Sunday, it all depends on when most of our players would prefer to play, and also where the free spots are in the league. When starting it up, I want all our players to have a say as to what they'd prefer in terms of when we play, even the teams identity like kits, colours, badge etc...It's be a bit selfish I reckon to just mould the club in my image. That said I have made a crest that I think it pretty cool, but it's not final by any means. I'll make the suggestions and they can say yay or nay or come up with their own ideas, and then together that inagural group of players plus myself will form the teams identity.

With the new development, yes apparantly it will include soccer pitches that will be available to the public, which is why I think this is the perfect time to set up the club, and why I think previous attempts didn't quite work. I predict it will take about 6 months to form the club, then the development will be done and we'll be ready to go for the 2014 season. Like Big Kev said "I'm excited!"

Good work mate.

I know some (mainly nugget) will object to new clubs but it is a booming area, if the team was based in the western suburbs I would be skeptical because there is a saturation of teams out there already and there seems to be 1 club folding from that area per season. The demand is there though, Parafield Gardens have a heap of teams, as do Ingle Farm, even Gleeson at Pooraka have 3 sides, that's the 3 closest teams geographically and there is no shortage of players.

Good luck with everything.

Lots of kids in that area so maybe start from the ground up and look at juniors first,

Lots of clubs close by but with such a large population currently there i would have thought numbers wouldn't be a problem ( although there are a lot of current residents affilliated with other SAASL clubs), advertising and tapping into the University would be a priority (numerous overseas students), i would think juniors would come easily also as lots of the current residents are proud Mawson Lakes residents. Plenty of potential sponsors also.

Who though actually plays for the club the live closest to? Far less than 50% I would have thought.

Most of the folks around here are proud of being Mawson Lakes residents,so I reckon they'll jump at the chance to represent the area as part of a soccer team.

I'll be advertising on the forums here for players soon, we also need an assistant coach. We have a coach already but we'll need another a guy to take on some of the work with running trainings and so on. He'll be more like a co-coach than an assistant coach, because both coaches will have the same importance and the same say in how things are run.

I'm looking at holding a stall at the Mawson Lakes markets to promote the club as well, and the Salisbury Council's sports development people already know about us, plus I'll be advertising at the uni, and in the Living magazine, which is like a little community magazine that goes out to all the houses here every month and tells people whats going on in Mawson Lakes etc.

We'd love to have junior sides as well in the eventual future, but while we're just starting out it's probably best to start small, see what kind of interest we get, and build things up from there. We've got big plan for the club, but Rome wasn't built in a day as they say.

Good luck with setting up your new club. As you say Mawson Lakes Community should have there own club, & it will be great to have another "Nothern" club just down the hill to add to our great sport.
