Re: Want to start a referee career?
It is also worth noting that this course is open to juniors aged 14-18 years of age wishing to run lines. 90% of our current juniors come directly from Elizabeth and Districts. This makes it a challenge to get ARs to games outside the northern area. So if you know any juniors who might be interested, please alert them to this opportunity.
Thanks.
BTW.. there is NO cost to undertake this course.

Pay decent money and you'll attract some good refs. Pay peanuts and you'll get geriatrics like you have now, who ref like it's still 1970.

How can they ref like it's 1970...you could tackle players and chat to the referee back in 1970.Ga Pala wrote:Pay decent money and you'll attract some good refs. Pay peanuts and you'll get geriatrics like you have now, who ref like it's still 1970.

Re: Want to start a referee career?
The pay is reasonable I think. Div 1 amateur refs get about $10-15 less than Federation second tier.Ga Pala wrote:Pay decent money and you'll attract some good refs. Pay peanuts and you'll get geriatrics like you have now, who ref like it's still 1970.
An ageing association is pretty much standard across ALL sports. Very few in the younger age bracket take up officiating adult competitions in all codes of football for many reasons ie. lots more lifestyle options nowadays.
For the young ones who do take it up, many leave after a couple of years sick of the agro shown towards them by the lower division clubs while they are still learning to develop as a referee. It can take 4-5 years before a referee is ready for a Div 1 game but most who show promise are long gone by then.
So Ga Pala .... are you from one of those clubs that are the REAL cause of the problem of why we have an ageing referee group?

Div 1 amateur refs get $10-$15 more, due to no deductions..
things happen for a reason

yet another NEGATIVE comment from our friend Go Pala.... so what would your solution be ???????Ga Pala wrote:Pay decent money and you'll attract some good refs. Pay peanuts and you'll get geriatrics like you have now, who ref like it's still 1970.
Re: Want to start a referee career?
That Aaron bloke you guys have at Fulham does a great job, what do you pay him?Ga Pala wrote:Pay decent money and you'll attract some good refs. Pay peanuts and you'll get geriatrics like you have now, who ref like it's still 1970.
Re: Want to start a referee career?
Pay more than federation and you'll get more refs. The amateur league have a bucket load of money but don't like spending it. Sorry to say but too many refs in the league are terrible.

Re: Want to start a referee career?
One of the main problems we have in the SAASL is that players think that they are a whole lot better than they really are, and continue to expect to be refereed by World Cup standard referees. If you want a better referee go and play a higher level rather than constantly gripe. For those referees who have to officiate with Club Linesman they have an almost impossible task when the assistants supplied by the clubs range in ability from incompetent to very good with a fair spattering of cheats thrown into the mix. When one club has an honest linesman and the other has a less than competent linesman the referee will be accused of cheating when he accepts the majority of decisions from one assistant and constantly over rides the decisions from the other. Every club will tell that their club linesman is honest, keeps up with play, knows the laws and is never wrong.
Re: Want to start a referee career?
Your spot on egg and chips. Another issue with the league is that they have far too many teams and therefore the refs are spread far too thin. The club ref scheme has not worked IMO as players always believe they are cheating for their own club.

Re: Want to start a referee career?
Isnt that more fo a reflection on the players rather than the referee?
Have to say, I thought the referees we had this year were good.

Re: Want to start a referee career?
Every current player should be made to referee a few games where possible.
Only then will they understand that no matter what decision you make, some knob, usually with NFI about the laws of the game, will call you a cheat. refs might get some more respect of players get to experience their side.

I tend to agree with your first point here.
I do actually think ref'ing is a lot tougher than some players think.
In the few games that I have ref'd in I will admit I got some calls wrong. It was a lot harder than I first thought.
In saying that, the guys ref'ing at div1/2 standard should be fairly well experienced.

Re: Want to start a referee career?
I believe the clubs had both A-Grade , B-Grade official refs and 2 x assistants for A-Grade game , in Sunday div 1 , div 2 and div 3 , towarards the end of the season . This means that there were a lot of "club referees" who were redundant last season . May I suggest that all club contacts send their club referee to the free referee's course in February - then at least these people can obtain a certificate which says they at least know the official laws of the game . Then the Saturday club referee member's might be available to run lines or ref B-grade games on a Sunday and the Sunday club referee member's might be available to run lines or ref B-grade games on a Saturday.......Go to www.saasra.org for more info .

The club referee should already have a qualification, albeit Level 5. I think this course is Level 4.

I assume attendance of all 4 days is mandatory to pass, I can't make 2 of the nights.

Re: Want to start a referee career?
Many people who have never refereed don't realise the mental energy required to MANAGE a game. It's more than just being able to spot what is a foul and what isn't. I found this checklist on the SAASRA web site and there over 3 pages of dot points of what referees are marked on for their performance... http://www.saasra.org/match-assessors.htmlEast Boy wrote:Ciudad Juarez wrote:Every current player should be made to referee a few games where possible.
