SAASL Round 1 - Question
Hey Forumites.
The week after easter is round 1 of the SAASL 2012 season.
For those scheduled to play on Sunday it is also coincidently easter for greek, serbian, russian and coptic (i think) orthodox people.
There are teams where there are a predominant amount of Orthodox players playing, where we intend on spending the day with family to celebrate easter together.
I am interested to know if teams with a number of players in this situation have re-scheduled games or if there is a precedent around this?
Interested to know previous experiences?

No matter whether we get drawn to play the Prelim Cup on Saturday or Sunday I'm playing regardless and I hope the majority of my team mates do the same....
Coptic Easter services are at night so that shouldn't factor into it......
Re: SAASL Round 1 - Question
Great question...
We have had a few of our Junior parents asking questions as well about this because they are fixtured on the Sunday as well.
Would be interested in previous situations and how they were handled.

Re: SAASL Round 1 - Question
it's only 2.5 hours out of your day max. Surely you can fit in a game of soccer.

Re: SAASL Round 1 - Question
I know when my brother played juniors for Comets and they had a game against Olympic/West Adelaide (Not sure which, or if they are the same) rescheduled to a date away from orthodox easter. Maybe if the team you are playing have a similar issue, an alternative can be arranged.

We don't play on your Easter champ and if you served your nation in the armed forces I'm sure no one would have any issue if you chose not to play on that day.clemence wrote:we play on bloody ANZAC day seniors and Juniors so get on with it
This is another area where the league let's itself down. This issue is raised yearly and the leagues stance is
You try to reschedule with your opponent. If they don't agree then the match goes ahead.
Based on that theory they should also schedule a round on Catholic Easter also.

Maybe the saasl should have scheduled matches where you all played each other this Sunday with a byo referee ? and I think you meant Christian EasterSrbin wrote:We don't play on your Easter champ and if you served your nation in the armed forces I'm sure no one would have any issue if you chose not to play on that day.clemence wrote:we play on bloody ANZAC day seniors and Juniors so get on with it

Re: SAASL Round 1 - Question
That's a stupid stat as if you were to take Orthodox players as a % of the total # of registered SAASL players that figure would be a lot higher.bloodypassit wrote:better keep the 2.7% of Australians happy by not playing on Orthodox Sunday
Having said that, I have always been an advocate of "majority rules, minorities adapt" so lets just bloody play on the 14th/15th as scheduled!!!!

Above states SAASL Easter weekend is April 7/8. That should clarify what 'our' Easter is in regards to football. No offence intended to you Srbin I understand this day means a lot to you guys who are of that faith, but where do you draw the line? SAASL has a comp to run should we also stop for African, Chinese etc nationaly/religiously celebrated days?
Re: SAASL Round 1 - Question
Nothing to do with it being easter, more to do with it being a long weekend. We don't play on any of them, do we? Or at worst, only play cups, so more people get the time off.
"Catholic" easter is just the ultimate long weekend.

2-3 hours out of your weekend is all it has to be.

The long weekend where most like to get away, because of the day off each side of the weekend. I doubt there is a religious explanation from the SAASL for no games over Easter.blackout wrote:Nothing to do with it being easter, more to do with it being a long weekend. Re: SAASL Round 1 - Question
I doubt they would have an explanation but they wouldn't need to as SAASL are a non-religious organisation....Blueblood wrote:The long weekend where most like to get away, because of the day off each side of the weekend. The scheduling of no games on Catholic Easter is more to reflect people who go away as blackout said....
Re: SAASL Round 1 - Question
Maybe next time when you send your club rego form in you could ask the league before they do the draw to consider playing all the orthodox teams against each other & call it the Unorthodox Round ![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)

I went to Church once, and the Pastor asked me why he never saw me on Sunday mornings with my Pop? I said I played football to which he replied, well my son, you need to choose one or the other. Easy friggen decision...
WHY DO THEY CALL IT OVALTINE? I MEAN ITS ROUND, WHY DONT THEY CALL IT ROUNDTINE.

Re: SAASL Round 1 - Question
I seriously hope that common sense prevails.
SAASL is all about being inclusive and accommodating to all colours, nationalities and religious beliefs.
I for one wont be playing on a day where we are supposed to be celebrating together with family.
The simplest and most common sense answer to it re-schedule and it needs to be backed by SAASL to re-schedule.
I just wondered whether other clubs have had experiences and their previous learnings and how they went about it, and what was the outcome.
I dont care if you think we should platy, change religions, change sports... this is not the intention of the forum topic

Re: SAASL Round 1 - Question
+1 I'd be happy to play on Easter weekend but the fact is a large amount of people go away including referees etc so makes sense having no games....religion is definitely NOT a good enough reason........no sky daddy is going to dictate when i play footballBANYA wrote:I went to Church once, and the Pastor asked me why he never saw me on Sunday mornings with my Pop? depends who you are drawn against.....If both clubs should agree to re-schedule...saasl have never had a problem with this. But, If the other club still wants to play then you have every right to forfeit.BeogradGeneralsC's wrote:I seriously hope that common sense prevails.
