FFSA breakaway competition - your thoughts?

Post by guti »

What are your thoughts on, if the rumour is true, that the SAASL has been approached to administer the FFSA breakaway competition (and they have accepted)?

Should this be put to SAASL members on Monday at the preseason meeting for a vote?

This is concerning.

I think the SAASL might be backing this proposal so that they can use it a leverage to allow their affilliated Junior setups and the SAASL to be recognised by the FFA.
However, without knowing first hand what is transpiring, it is difficult to know whether the "breakaway" group has enough critical mass to achieve that leverage ?

If administration only, not much different to adding another division or two I would have thought. But I wouldnt worry too much about it.

I've heard that 6/7 clubs have definitely broken away (AC, ABE, Camp, Enflied, WA, Cumberland etc) with another 6 clubs on the fence.

The SAASL should tread carefully here, D'Attavi and his cronies, though noble in their action against the FFSA, will want a lot of power in the new league.

Although id find it highly unlikely that a bunch of volunteers would want these 'professionals' in, they can fark right off if they're thinking of using any of our already in short supply refs.

are some of the alleged breakaway teams in it for themselves or for the best interests of the game . Will the more prominent teams stand by the lesser teams and support them ?

The SAASL offered to handle all the initial adminstration involved in getting the breakaway league off the ground.... shouldn't affect the way the Amateur Comps are run. Having said that, as far as I'm aware, the Breakaway League will not be happening...... this year.

Why the FFSA need 15-20 employees to administer soccer here is laughable. The higher your costs, the higher clubs and players fees.

Would love to know what Carter is ripping out himself. He really needs to step down, he is obviously part of the problem, FFSA board should dissolve.

No point having two leagues

Should be the other way round

FFSA should handle 12 teams in the 'elite' competition all other clubs should come under SAASL banner

Having 3 semi-pro leagues in SA is a complete joke

There is a very strong Amateur competition in South Australia

Unfortunately a number of Amateur teams don't understand that they aren't good enough to be 'professional' and cling to the lower levels of the State League - there is nothing wrong with being a strong Amateur team, and this will in no way hurt junior development, in fact having a unified junior competition would make it far stronger

Start from there and build, perhaps in a few years you can add teams and possibly even another division but adding more 'poor' teams to the semi-pro league is simply weakening the competition

The point is ROBBO they don't just administer leagues. They are responsible for youth development, state teams, promotion and marketing, senior men and women, pathways blah blah blah.

You're correct in that there shouldn't be two competitions though. There should be one 'up and down' system (which I have described before) where clubs can choose to join a 'semi-pro' division if they finish in the promotion spots from one of the 'amatuer' divisions.

A lot of positive suggestions, a lot of negative actions.

I don't want SAASL dragged into the basketcase that is the FFSA (said a million times before). But the clubs coming across will still bring problems of needing new sponsors and unsustainable wages.

Both Federations / leagues have rich histories that should be respected and upheld by the powers that be (primarily referring to FFSA here).

Just remember, the only team in recent history to remove themselves from the FFSA and enter SAASL is Pt Pirie, and so far that has been ok but not smooth sailing (just from what I’ve read on these forums).

It’s ok to say AC, ABE et al will have their own division, but what about the likes of Cove, Toros, etc? Will they be propelled to the Premier Division, or forced to start in Div 4 like all other cross-over / new teams? I don’t think traditional Sat / Sun Premier Division teams would like that rejigging for the weaker Premier / State League teams.

I won’t get into FIFA suspension again, or this Indonesian League that apparently is a breakaway too (although it seems to have been set up like the EPL which is independent only from the FA, not FIFA), but I’d dare say most clubs like AC will see their players move interstate for better A-League pathways.

My understanding;

The clubs coming across will have their own sponsors and will not be reliant on the administrators (which is all they will be) to sustain their wages, this could be the avenue the SAASL would be seeking to break through to the mainstream FFSA clubs.

No club entering this new venture will play in any current format of the SAASL, unless they themselves wish to revert back to a pure amateur club.

As far as FIFA suspensions - what are the ramifications if the new league pays the NRF to the FFA?

From what I know, the FFSA indeed does have some serious issues that they need to address if they wish to keep the cash cows, who aren't even member clubs, on board.

Also interesting to note that the top 4 SAASL clubs could be competing in the SASA Cup, if the new league does in fact eventuate.

I think Port Pirie moving to the SAASL has been very smooth - no forfeits etc, I just think coming from the dizzy heights of the 'Federation' grossly underestimated the level that they were going into (Sunday Division 2) and ended up being relegated. But from an administrative point of view all seemed fine

Go into the santos building in the west parklands and have a look for yourself. They think they are bigger than what they are - that is the problem

This is concerning.
Until all the information is presented, its hard to know what to think. The FFSA clubs are self imploding and whilst I think they have valid issues, creating a new comp is hardly the right way to go unless at least 75% of all clubs are going to jump on board.

It's a very common problem, trying to have too much control often leads to a loss of control

Wouldn't be suprised if those who planned the Breakaway spend time planning and do it better next year as having dealt with Carter and the FFSA I can't see them ever changing

Don't ever give up hope for football in SA. Just remember Mr Carter did the exact same thing to Baseball in this state and when he was finally moved on they got their act together and are now booming.

One day the FFA will wake up to what is happening here in SA and lets all pray it's sooner rather than later.

This breakaway league was crushed before it even got off the ground. The thought of playing in a fantasy league, with a few select clubs, who believe they own football in this state, this game is bigger than the individual. The very arognace to initiate this without consulting the parents of juniors, members of there clubs. Who would provide the pathways, who would provide the referees?

What a joke to talk about arogance of the Clubs, what about the arogance of your association. Why dont you listen to your Clubs & the reason why they want to break away from your Association...

You wont because you don't want to know the answers to your questions.
FFSA + Mr. Carter = Arogance

This is fantastic PR if you are truely Mr Carter... perhaps one should consider listening to what the clubs are saying. Maybe the FFSA should develop some key values of listen, learn, care and deliver and then actually live those values!! You can only ever improve by listenting to those who you represent because at the end of the day they are the ones who judge you the most... i constantly remind myself about this at work... "the majority of people leave an organisation because of their manager and not the organisation". It's funny how this whole situation sounds like it's going down this same path.
