Kewell Not Thinking Retirement

Post by the_gun »

SOCCEROOS superstar Harry Kewell says he's got it in him to go to a third World Cup in 2014 and added he believes he could play football until he is 40.

The 32-year-old Australian international has publicly stated he'd love to go to Brazil 2014 despite moving well into veteran status by the time the tournament comes around.

Kewell told The SundayTelegraph that retirement isn't on his mind.

"That's just a word that everyone loves throwing out now," Kewell said.

"The way people look after themselves, people used to retire at 32, 33 ... now you're seeing players go to 37, 38, if not 40. I would love to go until I'm 40, you never know."

Kewell said he is keen to be part of the upcoming Australia squad for the March 29 friendly against Germany.

The Sydney-born forward proved he's still an important member of the Socceroos side with three goals in January's Asian Cup.

"We have a [friendly] coming up against Germany and I am hoping the trainer puts me in the squad," Kewell said.

"We've just come off a good tournament, it would have been a lot better if we won it.

"As far as I'm concerned, we still have a long way to go and we are starting it right.

“A lot of people were impressed with our attitude and our performances throughout the Asian Cup, so hopefully we have changed some people's minds."

The former Leeds United star's club future is less clear, with his contract at Turkish club Galatasaray expiring at the end of the season.

On his club future, he said: "It's a patience game. You have to sit and wait and the best thing you can do is concentrate on your job, go out there week in and week out and play good football."

Kewell was also cool on committing to an A-League return at some stage.

"I wouldn't say yes and I wouldn't say no. I don't want to get ideas in people's heads, but I have always left it open," Kewell said.

"If the right thing comes up and it was back in Australia, yeah, maybe."
