Italy loses Champions League place
The number of Champions League places allocated to clubs in Serie A will be reduced to just three from the start of the 2012-13 season.
Despite Inter's victory in the competition last year poor performances in general from Italian clubs over the last decade has seen their co-efficient ranking plummet.
Inter, Roma and Milan all lost the home legs of their Champions League knock out ties this month, making the prospect of any Italian team reaching the Quarter-Finals slim to none.
The distance between Italy and Germany in the co-efficient rankings is now too big to recover and in two years' time the team that finishes third in Serie A will have to go through the preliminary stages to reach the Champions League outright.
There are also ramifications for participation in the Europa League, as from 2012-13 the team that finishes sixth in Serie A will stay at home.

i can see what they mean and they do have some good points to back theyre decisions. but i still think keeping the 4th spot is fair for Serie A. It is still a WONDERFUL league to watch.
Also what will they do with the spot that was taken away, just delete it or give it to another league? EPL perhaps seein as Spurs and City have joined the group as title contenders, top 6.

Realistically they should give it to EPL. Bundesliga will be getting it though.# 5 wrote:i can see what they mean and they do have some good points to back theyre decisions. but i still think keeping the 4th spot is fair for Serie A. It is still a WONDERFUL league to watch.

+1 Give it to the premier league, seeing as it is currently the most largely competitive.# 5 wrote:i can see what they mean and they do have some good points to back theyre decisions. but i still think keeping the 4th spot is fair for Serie A. It is still a WONDERFUL league to watch.

bundesliga is awesome atm, much more entertaining than serie a

Coefficients are based on the only objective criteria available in football. Results. Germany has earned it.

you just have to look at how many english sides make it to the end of the tournament, a couple of years ago 3 out of the final 4 were english teams. and they usually always progress to at least quarters/semis, contested 5 out of the last 6 finalsYids wrote:+1 Give it to the premier league, seeing as it is currently the most largely competitive.# 5 wrote:i can see what they mean and they do have some good points to back theyre decisions. but i still think keeping the 4th spot is fair for Serie A. And yet only 2 English clubs have won the Champions League in the last 10 years. EPL = overrated.gerr8rd wrote:you just have to look at how many english sides make it to the end of the tournament, a couple of years ago 3 out of the final 4 were english teams. and they usually always progress to at least quarters/semis, contested 5 out of the last 6 finalsYids wrote:+1 Give it to the premier league, seeing as it is currently the most largely competitive.# 5 wrote:i can see what they mean and they do have some good points to back theyre decisions. but i still think keeping the 4th spot is fair for Serie A. I'm fairly sure the EPL is more challenging than the La Liga. It's either Real or Barca challenging for the title, this year has shown, in the coming years the top six of the Premier League is going to be very tight. The matter of the fact is, English teams are always progressing in the Champions League. Take note.

Re: Italy loses Champions League place
It should be one team only from each league. Or rename it back to the European Cup.
It is not a Champions League in any way......

Re: Italy loses Champions League place
Beyond happy. Redknapp has changed the face of Spurs, we are now a team with top 4 credentials and are even planning a crack at the league in a few years. Who wouldn't be happy with that after years being a cup team! I enjoyed being a "cup team" but for too long we watch Chelsea and Arsenal at the top of the table. I think we needed to change that mentality, and it's a bonus to see Spurs playing well in Europe and getting the results. Wins at the San Siro and at home vs Inter proved we are a quality side, hopefully we can get ourselves a world class striker and then I think we can be a genuine threat to the title.

Re: Italy loses Champions League place
guys - for those who dont know - noone "makes" this decision, its all based on coefficients (where a country received points based on how well their clubs go in european competitions) and your ranking
see here for the rankings - http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uef ... k2011.html
germany is destroying italy at the moment in terms of points (despite inter winning the CL last year)
however i must point out, it is a flawed system as europa cup wins contribute the same amount of points as a CL win

How? The national team maybe, but they don't play in the Champions League. In the last four seasons (including this one) only 6 Bundesliga teams have made the last 16, against 15 EPL teams.Kitchimo wrote:Coefficients are based on the only objective criteria available in football. If you're basing it on results then it could only go in one direction.

so germany is the next best ranked nation with 3 behind england, spain and for a little bit longer italy, so they get it

Fair enough but then it's not really based on results, more on political expediency.DOC wrote:4 is the max one nation will getNice One Cyril wrote:How? How so? If Russian teams start winning in Europe, they go up the list and are eligible for more spots. The teams from the countries that do well are rewarded. The point of including both the UCL and Europa is to reward leagues that have strength in depth as opposed to leagues that have two or three big teams and then fuck all (ie Portugal, Scotland)Nice One Cyril wrote: Fair enough but then it's not really based on results, more on political expediency.

Re: Italy loses Champions League place
Except that it's limited by UEFA politics to four spots per country. It's meant to be the premier competition in Europe, yet teams like Tel Aviv (is that even IN Europe?), Zilina, Cluj and Bursaspor are consistently getting in ahead of teams like Man City, Liverpool or Spurs. If their leagues are wank then don't give them any CL spots until they at least consistently reach the last 8 of the Europa.Kitchimo wrote:How so? a champion of a 'lower league' should have a greater right to European competition than 6th place in the EPL...Nice One Cyril wrote:Except that it's limited by UEFA politics to four spots per country.
