CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
What is the general opinion about players talking or calling out to the ref by their first name, particularly home teams with the A grade ref??
IMO the ref should be called either ref or sir.
It just gives a bias feeling on every decision he makes if the home team complains & calling him by his first name.
Before the game or after the game fair enough but I think not during the game...

Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
sir......lol......if you have been playing the game for a long time and they have refereed you heaps of time i dont see a problem with it, its not as if a ref is going to change his mind if you call him by his first name is it?
Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
If the ref introduces himself by his first name before the game to the captains, why not? Plus, most of these refs have been around forever and people know who they are.

Depends on the individual....
In 1854 Thomas Aitken had a hard earned thirst.
Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
We know them all by their first and last names "your f@#ing kidding me"
Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
I have only ever heard a ref being called Sir by a fellow Viper team mate...
Its usually under protest with coldie in hand and normally in the second half

A big no no in my opinion.....
The Ref should be addressed as Ref or Sir...No matter how familiar you are with them.
Call them what you like after the game.
I sometimes forget with a club ref but correct myself always.

calling the ref sir is a rugby thing. One of our players is from sydney and always does it. Refs should be called ref during the game, even if it's your best mate.
Things I am owed because they're too tight to pay up:

I don't really converse with them during a game (unless I am running the line and they ask for my opinion).

i am a captain and i still refer to them as ref. had a ref earlier in the year that i do know quite well and still called him ref. even though i was tempted to use his name but he did well so no need
"barmy army, chairboys!!"
Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
Refs are encouraged to learn player names and address players by their names or nicknames - players should do the same, no?
Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
a lot of refs call me Hawkesy, I call them ref until after the whistle. It's about the perception if I call them by a name or a nickname then when a decision goes my way there will be a perception of bias.seanason wrote:Refs are encouraged to learn player names and address players by their names or nicknames - players should do the same, no?

Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
I only play Cs so cant comment on 'official refs' but as we ALWAYS have a club ref for our home games (usually another player) I still call whoever it may be "ref" during the game.

Cant see the issue. The majority of referees have been around the traps for years and everyone knows them.
If I know the ref I will call him by his first name. Apart from Sharkey, I just call him a fucking cunt.

Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
Refs are less likely to get abused and better equipped to tone down a situation if they can build a rapport with the players on the field.
If everybody refers to him by the first name and he can learn nicknames or names during the game then it would hardly be biased, with the added benefits mentioned at the top of this post.

Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
I have it on good authority The Roo was calling big Steve (The big boned Mr Bean) 'babe' and 'darling' during the game on Sunday when he was whinging for his free kicks and hand balls that never happened.
He was then overheard asking the same ref to call him Shirley later on that night.
It should be ref! Nothing more.

exactly right, ref is the way to go, please calling him sir reminds me of school ffs.Hawkesy wrote:calling the ref sir is a rugby thing. One of our players is from sydney and always does it. Refs should be called ref during the game, even if it's your best mate.
Re: CALLING REFS BY THEIR FIRST NAME ON THE FIELD
They should be referred to as 'Ref', however i have a gripe when they call you by your first name. If we are to call the Official 'Ref', the least they can do is call us number 10 etc...
So my theory is, if the Official refers to me by name, then i refer to him/her by name... Seems only fair i think...
