New to coaching

Hey all,
I've been asked to coach my div 4 amateur team this year... by default really because i've played there for a little while and we don't have a real coach!

Just wondering if anyone knows of good free online resources or has some good tips?

I realise you can't just become a coach by reading a few websites but if someone could point me in a useful direction it would be much appreciated... Cheers!

Sure you won't become a coach straight away, but reading never hurts. Check anything you will find, you will surely get some usefull info around the web.

Read blog section on the site in my signature, maybe it will give you some ideas about coaching as well.

One key is to make sure they get as many touches on the ball as possible. Perhaps do a "game" where they have to tap the ball with both feet as many times as possible. Then the young'un with the highest count gets to go first in the next drill (if it's a drill [make sure it's a game] where they take turns).


A.C. Milan (if memory serves correct) have a drill for their academy which is essentially "two touches with the inside of the foot, two with the inside" while dribbling, repeat on the opposite foot. Gets plenty of touches in for both sides of the foot, and they can dribble around a box with several people to help with spacial awareness at the same time (though it may be an idea to introduce that last part after a few sessions).

I am not sure people understand that this is a common occurance at Amateur level and that there is not much suport out there. It would be great for some of the more experienced coaches to run some clinics for new coaches. There is plenty out there and some great courses if you want to start by coaching juniors. It seems that if you don't coach them first then the attitude is you shouldn't be coaching seniors. It doesn't seem to matter that we are talking about the Amateur league!! Most coaches at the lower levels would love some good coaching tips that would be suitable for the more mature squads we have to deal with.
