The England international midfielder is the first Liverpool player for 19 years to win the award, beating Ryan Giggs and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard salutes the Kop after scoring against Real Madrid in the Champions League
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been crowned the 2009 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association (FWA).
The accolade is decided by journalists, who voted for the Reds captain ahead of Manchester United duo Ryan Giggs, who won the 2009 PFA Player of the Year award in April, and Wayne Rooney.
Gerrard is the first Liverpool player to win the prize since 1990, when John Barnes was awarded the trophy.
The 28-year-old England international, who has scored 14 goals in 72 caps for his country, has found the back of the net 23 times in 42 appearances in all competitions for the Reds this season.
