Hello all,

I heard on a radio program today that there may have been some 'misbehaving girls' on this state trip. Now I missed whether they were from our state or not but if this was being talked about on a local radio station then one would assume they were from SA. No information was given about what was alleged to have happened.

I heard the same radio station and they were referring to the SA girls team. It was said that the coach had to discipline some of the girls which led to not playing the strongest side.

You only live once! :D
Joking. At least they were disciplined, one would hope they would learn from their mistakes if they are to attend another state trip.

If they have been disciplined by the coach etc, I believe any matters arising should be dealt with by FFSA and parents, not aired on a radio station. Or on this forum. Who ever mentioned any transgressions to or on radio should be spoken to also. Thats my opinion. :(

Disappointing however not unexpected. My comments for you all to consider.

Under 14’s squad is a bit different to the squad I recall from 8-10 years ago. Far more mature and with coaches who cracked the whip. Fore sure stuff happened but not too the detriment of the game.

Unfortunately from my observations, under 14’s are treated like kids out on a school camp only with a bigger price tag attached to it.

There are only a few players (less than a handful) that are mature about the intent of the competition get in. Due to a lack of real quality players, quite a few peripheral players (whose parents are happy to fork out quite a few hundred dollars) get taken along to make up numbers. Hence the PROBLEMS.

Will things change? Not if this group (or players of similar make-up) moves through the age groups.

The move of SASI to not have mature players on their list will also come back to haunt them. I know it happens interstate buy hey, they have the numbers to drop players if they become undisciplined. There appears to be no “elder” statesmen to set the agenda, keep players in line. Peer group pressure is a big thing amongst women players. Coaches don’t have the courage to rule hard.

Just look at the difficulties male state coaches have had in the past. They don’t last long. Unless they pander to the girls and become all soft and mushy, the players comments on the reviews will inevitably ensure they don’t get another gig. State representation should be a proud moment for players. Unfortunately its gone before we know what it was we had. I think that a tougher line needs to happen so that the right player is selected. Otherwise, we’ll become a laughing stock. Coaches need to manage with discipline and not treat it as a school camp with so many competing agendas taking the focus away from the game. If we don’t field a team this year who cares. Less damaging than sending a bunch of undisciplined clowns to represent SA. ????

Competing agendas? Well it depends what age group and context. Make up your own mind.

In considering your comments, the people who would definitely care are those girls who are really serious and know what is potentially on offer to players who perform well at the Nationals (for example the 2 sasi girls who are hoping to play in the U15 state team at the Nationals in July, and there are others too).
With regards to sending 'a bunch of undisciplined clowns' (your words not mine!), then players who take this seriously could potentially be overlooked because national selectors etc may not pay much attention to an undisciplined or poorly performing team, but equally if these players are not even at the Nationals they will not get their opportunity to be noticed either.
I am sure that the group of girls who will represent SA at U15 and U17 will take notice of recent events, and understand the importance of the opportunity they are being presented with.

all state teams act up
i know we did. every year. the phrase 'don't tell wendy' is quite popular with a certain group of girls. of course, we never really did anything that out of line, and the one thing we did do, we got severely spoken to by wendy who was coaching that year. but there were too many girls involved to bench them.
so the girls must have taken it waaaay too far for it to be a problem. which then is concerning, and intriguing. however beaches is probably right.

Most times however, the things that happen "behind the scenes" end up affecting the on field performances.

This is something that needs attention however, the sledgehammer approach is not the way to go. I definitely undertsand that this part and parcel of the state trip however, this type of behviour is rarely displayed by NSW (3 teams) and Qld.

State representation is an honour that most players never quite fully appreciate.
