Adelaide Celtic 1988-1998

Post by swannsong »

Link to SAASL Images and Stats index.

Was chatting with another forum user tonight and the subject of Adelaide Celtic came up.
Adelaide Celtic started in 1988 in Sunday Division 8...here's a bit of their track record.
In the early days Tam Lamont was the backbone of the club.
A few Downs people turned up at Celtic, George Getgood (played together in 1984-1985) and Jim Boyd ( was Downs physio in 1977-1980, his son was a Downs junior.

1988 - Division 8 - Top (played at the Parks Community Centre)
1989 - Division 7a - 2nd.
1990 - Division 6 - Top. (played on Parklands next to Adelaide High)
1991 - Division 3 - 6th. (Changed name to Adelaide Celtic Croydon - they took over Croydon's spot in Division 3)
1992 - Division 3 - 2nd.
1993 - Division 2 - 4th.
1994 - Division 2 - 7th. (played at Pennington )
1995 - Division 2 - 9th. ( played at Ramsey Park Elizabeth, Changed to Adelaide Celtic SC)
1996 - Division 2 - 10th.
1997 - Division 2 - Bottom (played at Dauntsey Road, Elizabeth North Changed to ES Celtic SC )
1998 - Division 3 - withdrew after 8 games - disappeared.

Does anyone know if the Barbiero in Noarlunga United's 1992 list, is any relation to Fabian as he is a Reynella boy.

Swannsong.
The old 92 year team is the continuation of the Southern Knights club. Babiero is Fabians father who has played for Noarlunga and Southern knights for many years. Fabian grew up around southern Knights for his junior years with current southern knight players. You probably expect fabian to come to the knights when he has finished with his good career.
The mooneys there are Colin and Steve Mooney. Harrison is Matthew Harrison still currently at the knights.
In the adelaide Celtic Team photos R. Finlayson is the Southern Knights chairman. Also the C.Mooney the goal keeper in the celtic teams is the bother of Colin Mooney and the Steve Mooney in the Noarlunga team.
Hope this helps.

It's always good to read threads like this one about past SAASL clubs etc.

SAASL has a fantastic history, and has and continues to provide opportunities and enjoyment to many. And yet there are those who wish to destroy it for the "good" of the game.

There where quite a few of us playing at parafield then left to start Adelaide Celtic.
We always had a new years day game against the Rangers Supporters Club.

web, I remember some of the first lads that played when they left Parafield and my old man breaking his leg against Celtic in a game at Parafield. Those were the days when someone broke their leg and they were carried off 2 yards from the pitch and the game went on :)

Yes, I also remember one guy breaking his leg in 3 places then coming back on just after halftime and scoring two great goals

Times were tough back then

Just one break, vertically, and he had to hop to the car park and drive himself (and a very young me) to the hospital. Unfortunately he was playing on the Gardens far pitch so it was a long hop, but luckily the car was an automatic.

And yes he was literally put 2 yards off the pitch , next to the cricket pitch, while the game continued.

We even had Rangers supporters donning the green hoops was great way to finish before famiily life took over.

Jimmy Hughes...if it is the same Jimmy Hughes, his father Jimmy Hughes (Snr) was my coach at the Downs in 1974-76...initially a player coach...think he played for Beograd at one stage.
Jimmy Hughes the 2nd. was a quality player who played at Salisbury United & Elizabeth City before playing for the Vale...

Jimmy and Pat's father Jimmy is at the front right of this picture (sitting) from 1969 when he played for Texas Rangers.

I think he may have had a stint with West Adelaide Hellas Juniors. Was a good 5 a side player as well.
