Help with personal player insurance?

Post by Azzurri80 »

Hi guy's,

Look I'll be totally honest with you all and state that I don't even know if this exists within the amatuer football world but I would like to know if there is any such thing out there as personal injury insurance you can get while playing amatuers.

I would appriciate your thoughts as I've tried to do some research but have only come across guys who will insure clubs against public liability, and judging from what I have read, this kind of cover doesn't include players.

To give a quick lowdown of my situation, I use to play amatuers for many years when I was younger but suffered a bad knee injury about 7 years ago that required a recon and a minor bout of depression (when the doc told me I could never play again). My love of the game motivated me to loose 30kg (that I put on during my injury time) and slowly but surely I started playing collegiate last year and I am now back with my old team in div 2 this season as my confidence has grown a little and the hunger to play in a more competitive league has taken hold.

Anyway, the knee feels fine but I remember when I did it and the cost it incurred regarding medical bills and time off work. Therefore, I was curious to know if there is a place out there that would cover me incase it happened again (so help me god!). I remember about 5 years after I did it a mate told me I could have made a claim against my club or the league. I don't know how true this was but regardless, I don't think I would be comfortable making a claim against my club, as I know how hard it is, for not only my club, but for all clubs to survive financially without the added burden of this type of expense. This is why I would rather find some type of cover (what ever the cost and if it even exists) so if anything does happen, I would rather fork out for an excess fee if it covers my expenses and loss of wages, rather then lose big time on loss of wages etc.

I never thought I would play again after the injury I sustained, But I am 30 now and loving life, as my love of the game is somewhat obsessive, and the fact I have been given the opportunity to play again is a huge relief, honour and joy  . I know it sounds a bit teary eye, but I'm sure there's many of you out there that have been in my position and understand what it means to get back out on the pitch again. I'm not the greatest player but I hope to play for a long time as I think I would be lost without being able to playthe game I love so much each week.

Anyway, sorry to go on but it is the first time I have really spoken about that dark time in my life, but if any of you can help it would be great so thanks in advance.

I enquired about it last year, it was pretty expensive. Let me know how you go as i am starting to think that i really need it.
If you're having Spurs problems I feel bad for you son
I've got 99 problems but the Yids ain't one.

PS: Spurs remain a quality side, I don't care what you say. The Feyernoord Jubileum Tournament doesn't win itself, you know.

You can cover your employment wages by taking out income protection insurance - although your premiums will be higher if you play a contact sport or work in a physical job. I am not too sure about taking out insurance to cover medical expenses etc, connected to playing sport.

I personally have income protection insurance.

It will pay you 75% of your wage if you are unable to work due to inury or illness. There are many options on how to set it up and this will determine when it will pay you and what it will cover. I don't pay any additional loading for playing soccer on my policy. If you work a manual job it will cost more than an administrative job which makes sense because i can work with a broken leg, a builder may find it difficult.

The cover i have will pay me a lump sum for broken bones which i really like. So if I do break a leg but can still go to work it i will get a lump sum payment.

To give you an idea of cost, a person who works in admin with an income of $60k will have cover of $3,750 per month. This will kick in after 30 days off work and can pay you $3,750/ month increased by inflation until you are 65 if you are unable to work and a doctor agrees. You will also get 2 x $3,750 if you fracture a lower leg but don't take any time off work.

The cost of this cover is $860 each year which is fully tax deductible.

I have previously offered to make a payment to your club for each completed policy that i do and am happy to continue with that.

Get in contact with me and i can give you an exact quote based on your details.

Unfortunately you may have an exclusion on the knee that you have previously injured. It should still cover your other knee. The longer you wait to get the policy the more exclusions you may have, that's why i tell people to get it while they are young.

The link below can tell you more. The details of the policy start on page 46 of the product disclosure statement which is available at the bottom of the linked page.
