A JOGGER killed close to his home in a freak chain of events yesterday was a "a wonderful husband and a brilliant father".
John Ficcadenti, 38, a father of two, was returning home from a morning run when he was struck by one of two tyres which sheared off a passing semi-trailer.
In a tragic twist, the driver of a rig behind the semi-trailer had seen wheel nuts pop off the tyre and tried to alert the driver by CB radio.
However, the driver, who has a hearing problem, did not receive the warning.
Mr Ficcadenti was less than 100m from his Athelstone home when he was struck.
His wife Suzanne was on the scene within minutes, but nothing could be done to save the IT professional.
Neighbours said they had spent five years campaigning for pedestrian safety improvements along the same stretch of road, fearing a fatal accident could occur.
Mr Ficcadenti's widow was too distraught to speak last night.
His team-mates at MC Woodpeckers Soccer Club announced they would play their grand final next week in his honour.
A spokesman for the Paradise-based club said Mr Ficcadenti had two daughters, aged seven and three.
"He was a fantastic guy, he was there every week," the spokesman said.
"He was a leader, an inspiration to all and loved by all, and sadly missed. Next week is the grand final of the Cup. We will be playing for him, his kids and his wife."
The accident occurred about 9.20am on a winding road with a 60 km/h speed limit.
Mr Ficcadenti was climbing over a steel crash barrier on Gorge Road to cross the road just as the truck rounded a bend.
Witness Michael Gotz, who was walking along a cycle track in a gully beside the road, said he could also have been hit by a tyre.
"I saw a back tyre flying down here . . . 20 metres away from me," he said.
"The driver looked in his mirror to see he'd cleared the pedestrian and he saw the wheel hit the guy."
Mr Gotz said the distraught truckie told him after the accident that another truck driver had seen his wheel nuts were coming off, and had tried to radio a warning over his CB radio. "He's got a hearing implant and didn't hear it," he said

Just read this in the paper. Sad to hear.
Just one question: Why was he climbing over the steel guard rail?

It was like being in the eye of a hurricane. You'd wake up in a concert and think, Wow, how did I get here?
