BEST GOALKEEPER AT EURO 2008

Post by Madridista612 »

Ok now I actually want some serious discussion, stats and the whole works. I go with Casillas, yes i'm probably biased towards him but I think the Spain v Italy game really showed the difference, Casillas saved Camoranesi's shot on the line and made no mistake with the clearance from his foot, when Senna sent that thunderbolt in on Buffon's goal, Buffon almost let his nations hopes slip right underneath him. I believe that "almost" is really the only thing you can judge these 2 guys on because really they're both quality in my opinion heads and shoulders above the rest. Buffon almost let the ball in, Casillas was nowhere near letting the ball in. Also Buffon has conceded 4 goals at Euro 2008 and Casillas has only conceded 2. What do you think?

if one tournamnet is ALL u base it on, then BUFFON is still theBEST!

Yeah casillas did this and that, but BUFFON SINGLE handledly kept the azzurri in the euros until spain come around.
Also, many TOP keepers make fumbles, BUT DID HE COST ITALIA a goal with Sennas shot???
NO
So ur theory cos he spilled Senns shot is totally ridiculous!
Apart from the Holland Game, BUFFON has been BEST Keeper at Euro 08

Best keeper at Euro 2008 - definitely not Buffon, probably Casillas although van der Sar was OK for the Dutch and Russia's keeper is not bad.

From the little I saw of Turkey, Volkan was a decent keeper but got sent off and then Rustu who is also a gun came in (and he made a Nikopolidis style error himself)

Best keeper in the world - Buffon

quite simply, Buffon has been below par at the Euro like many of the Italians and made 2 errors, one a goal, one not a goal, that we have not seen him make before.
Judging by his whole career, Buffon never makes these mistakes and it was very strange to see it happen here but I guess all players have bad patches.

That's the point though in all my years of watching Casillas play I've never seen him make an actual error, anyone got some youtube footage or something??

As for Volkan    seriously man you haven't seen him play enough he is the most terrible goalkeeper ever. Akinfeev not bad but he did concede 4 goals opening game. Van der Sar was also very good, if no one else says it, I will, I reckon Lehmann is having a sweet tournament between the sticks for Germany, either him or Casillas to be the best keeper of the tournament.

Also you have to take into account that for much of his career Buffon has had Cannavaro, Thuram, Emerson, Nesta and the like in front of him, Casillas has had Pavon, Helguera, Mejia, whilst i'll always respect Pavon, Helguera and Mejia....they're hardly in the same class as the previous mentioned.

as I said - haven't seen much of Turkey so cant comment properly. I'll take your word for it

Lehmann has been decent. Akinfeev conceding four was down to a crap defence vs a scintillating attack. Dont hold it against him.

Its well known that in his entire career, Buffon has only made one big error at club level. I'm sure Casillas has or will make one somewhere along the line, nobody is perfect but Gigi and Iker are as close as you'll get to it

also mention Bogdan Lobont from Romania.. Lazio were looking at signing him and maybe we should've

Oh ok well in that case there is no question that Casillas is better than Buffon, Casillas has conceded 2 goals in 3 games and Buffon has conceded 4 goals in 4 games. Besides it was actually Il Duce who mentioned the rest of players careers, I only went on with it.

U r completely wrong ..

According to diegom logic ( in which the penalty will take into the account ), Italy conceded 8 goals in 4 games ..
that's averagely 2 goals in 1 game ??
pretty suck i would said

Dont speak so soon, Iker has played 1 less game than Gigi -Spain have to play Russia and Iker mayconceed a goal or two!

And to both U and IL DUCE - STICK TO THE TOPIC then

no need to defend Buffon's tournament because Casillas has been better

title of thread: BEST GOALKEEPER AT EURO 2008

Buffon's name shouldn't be mentioned. He is the world's best but not the tournament's best.

How about this;

1. Iker Casillas, Gianluigi Buffon

2. Van der Sar

3. Cech

Have to question whether the head protection affects Cech? pre-injury he was almost faultless for Chelsea

Casillas/Buffon its all very good but we all know that the best keeper isn't judged by how many saves he makes its how many roots he gets that counts. Nicopolidis was definately the favourite here. Seriously what else could he be thinking of when he decided to leave his goal area for no good reason.

maybe Cech's injury affected his confidence more than just the headgear pissing him off

either that or he was overrated in the first place because he plays EPL and plays for Chelsea.

had a good defence but only conceded 15 goals in a season with chelsea in 04/05.

Only takes a couple big mistakes to ruin a reputation though

Buffon is well known not only to be a good goal keeper, but a leader and comands his area.

He single handedly and footed kept Italy in the Euro and made other brilliant saves.

just for the record..
only conceded 2 goals in the WC, beat france on penalties while spain lost 3-1 against france who at the time struggled to make it out of the group stages.

Just for the record..

At World Cup 2006

Spain had a very young Sergio Ramos, an attacking Pernia and an incredibly crap Marchena, Italy had Zambrotta, Cannavaro, Nesta, Grosso...if that isn't the best defence in international football I don't know what is.
