The draw has to be made first. Ten countries will be drawn onto two groups of five.

43 teams, 4·5 places
After the initial preliminary round was played in October/November 2007, 20 Asian teams have been drawn into five groups and currently playing the third round. The group winners and the runners up will proceed to Round 4, which consists of two groups of five teams.

In the fourth round, the 10 remaining teams will be drawn into 2 groups of 5 teams. The teams in each group play each other twice, once home and once away.
The top 2 teams in each group will qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.
The broad match schedule for this stage is:

Re: When is the next stage of qualification for Australia?
The 10 qualifiers will be drawn into two groups of five teams at the draw in Kuala Lumpur on 27 June 2008. The seeding for the fourth round will be identical to the third round draw, with the qualifiers split into 3 pots of 2 teams, with the bottom 4 ranked nations grouped together in a separate pot. Because Saudi Arabia and Japan are seeded equal 4th, there will be a random draw held to determine which pots they go into. Additionally, if Iraq qualify for the fourth round, they will be designated fifth position in their group, in order to avoid conflicts with the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup commitments they have, as a result of their win in the 2007 AFC Asian Cup.
The draw hasn't been made yet.

What happens to the 5th spot that is allocated to Asia? Is it the next best team out of the 2 groups that plays against the 6th ranked South American side?Bodø Glimt wrote:The 10 qualifiers will be drawn into two groups of five teams at the draw in Kuala Lumpur on 27 June 2008. Re: When is the next stage of qualification for Australia?
Iraq missed out. I saw the game this morning. Qatar played well and were the better team on the night. Unlike when they played Australia there was no paper on the field, but the fans did throw it in the air when they scored. They all dress the same and not in football kits either.

Iraq, is a huge loss for the qualification of the 2010 World Cup, well done to Qatar, they knocked out a potential team to go through to advance to the World Cup in 2010. One less team for Australia to get through.Bodø Glimt wrote:Iraq missed out. I saw the game this morning. Qatar played well and were the better team on the night.
