Ronaldo To Retire In The Summer?

Forever-injured Rossoneri striker Ronaldo is set to retire from football at the end of the season, according to unconfirmed reports in Milan.

The Brazilian has had a nightmare of a season due to injuries, making just one start before Christmas.

It seemed that his fitness was improving though when he lined up against Napoli in week 18 and scored two goals in a 5-2 win.

He impressed again the following week at Udinese, however then the injuries started to re-appear, and most recently he was forced off at half-time during Sundayâ€™s match with Siena due to physical problems.

Ronaldo is definitely out of tomorrowâ€™s clash with Livorno, and he is also a huge doubt for the weekend match with Parma and the Champions League tie with Arsenal in London.

The 31-year-old is said to be desperately depressed at continually picking up injuries and is ready to retire from the game altogether in the summer.

El Fenomenoâ€™s contract at San Siro runs out in June, and the club is unwilling to offer him a new deal unless he can prove his fitness.

This is looking increasingly unlikely, although Ronaldo will have the option to return home and play for Flamengo.

As a replacement Milan are considering bringing back Marco Borriello or Nicola Pozzi, who are currently at Genoa and Empoli respectively. Another option is Chelseaâ€™s Didier Drogba.

he's been on a disability pension since 2000 and semi-retired since 2002. Time to head to Asia or MLS and start living off his super.

Watched this guy from 96-99 and he was just a freak (and on par with Maradona) but since his second knee op he was a fraction of a player he was at Barca and his first year at Inter.

Pretty sure his knees would have served him better if it wasn't for the Maccas

AU should go for him as a marquee player. At least he would fit in well with the 'other' injury prone signings.

Official - Ronaldo tendon severed
Wednesday 13 February, 2008

Milan have now confirmed Ronaldo has completely severed the tendon in his left knee, effectively ending his career.

The striker collapsed as he jumped to reach a cross during tonightâ€™s 1-1 draw with Livorno and immediately the situation seemed to be serious.

His teammates waved for medical staff and called for a substitution as he was stretchered off the field in tears.

Ronaldo was rushed to a local hospital to undergo tests and initial reports suggesting he had completely severed the tendon were confirmed on the official Rossoneri website.

Ronnie has already suffered this type of injury twice before in 1998 and 2000, but that was in his right knee.

As there was talk of a possible retirement at the end of this season, if the diagnosis is confirmed then it is likely Ronaldoâ€™s career is over.

An injury of this type requires a player to be out of action for between nine months and a year.

I wouldn't put it past those dodgy diving Brazilians.

Regardless even going by his stated birthday he's been playing as a professional since age 14. I remember when he was at Inter he already had 12 seasons under his belt and there were question marks about his knees making a full recovery from then.

I keep saying it but the Ronaldo post 98 wasn't as good as the one before and since 02 he's been a fraction of the player he was.

according to my mates at Wiki he's on 240. But I think that is using the imperial system

Those 7 goals like the goals he scored in the 02 world Cup were all around positioning (taps in) with the occasional well taken shot.

A far cry from the Ronaldo of old who would need four or five defenders to stop him getting away. He was scoring a goal a game in his first 5 years as a professional but not only scoring he was unstopable leaving defenders for dead with his skill, pace and strength.

Sure he scored against us in last year's derby but compared to Ibra's performance Ronaldo looked average at best.

The fact that he was double chinned in his last few years didn't help either

But it is not as if he has been terrible for the past couple of years. Still a great goalscorer. And when you have the likes of Kaka, Pirlo and Seedorf setting you up, there is nothing wrong with being well positioned as you know what these guys are capable of when delivering a ball

even if in your eyes he hasnt been good for 3/4 years we are still saying goodbye to an all time great and you should recognize that

and how can he not have been good for the past 3/4 he has scored goals every year he has played in his 5 years at real he played 127 games and scored 83 goals thats a pretty good return

Not terrible his touch never left him but as with all greats once the bench mark is set.......

The other thing that puts me off him is the fact that he let himself go, anyone coming off a knee recon knows rule 1 is keep the weight off.

Also hard to respect a player that plays for Barca, Inter, Real and Milan.

When you see a player putting on weight and going from rival club to rival club the only word that comes to mind is mercenary.

Agree great player but scoring for 4 different clubs in 2 of the biggest derbies in the world = mercenary.

That is my biggest problem with Ronaldo as well. He is THE ultimate mercenary.

At Barca Ronnie won nothing,
at Inter just a UEFA cup,
nothing at Real (they took the lead and won the championship when he left mid season) then
went to Milan to watch his team mates win CL & World Club championship
