Is there something wrong with the women's comp?

Post by SAD GAL »

We're in February, and the SAWSA comp kicks off in March and there are teams looking for players and coaches. Isn't this usually sorted out after the season ends or at the very least before Christmas?

Serious teams will no doubt have all positions settled, players recruited and trial matches happening.

Is there something wrong out there?

Well I'm not from a humorous club, we like to think we're fairly serious but we are still working out some details. It can be difficult to find people who will volunteer their time (2 nights a week and a Sunday) to coach a women's soccer team. We hoped to have all of this resolved a lot sooner but it just hasn't worked out that way.
Theory is a beautiful thing, trying to put it into practice is something else.

I think it all boils down to finances.
I dare say that most Clubs, because of lack of money, would need to ask players and supporters as well as families, to contribute financially, physically and morally.
It just gets too much and a lot of people prefer to walk away.
This problem is also common with a few men's clubs.

I dont think there is necessarily anything 'wrong'.

Sure most clubs will have finalised coaches and the majority of their players towards the end of last year. However, things are always subject to change, especially in the off/pre season. Changes in circumstances (often unpredictable) for coaches and players alike can mean commitments made in 'good faith' a few months before become impossible to keep once it gets to this time of year.

Also, there seems to be a lot of new teams out there this year - nobody can deny this should be a good thing. However, new teams can take time to get off the ground, and it also means more people who are prepared to commit to coaching etc need to be found to support these teams.
