Kevin Rudd to put Socceroos back on Free-to-Air

Fellas, this probably doesn't belong here on this forum, but it may be of some interest to some of you and hopefully influence your vote.
This is from Eammon's "Football in the Capital Blog":
Kevin Rudd to put Socceroos back on Free-To-Air
Senator Kate Lundy announced Labour football policy on the SBS today.
And it nearly bowled me over!
$32 million over 4 years, that is double the Liberal party commitment, with most of the expenditure in the next two years.
This would cover a TELEVISED women's national league,
A Labour Government will put the World Cup qualifiers back on Free-To-Air. That will really benefit the game and give the children, the players, and our future, the chance to see the stars of the World Game they play.
And they will have a use it or lose policy for sports broadcasters.
and money for grassroots, and Australian teams into Asia.
It sounded good to me. It sounded like, finally, after all these years, an Australian Political Party can see the benefit of the game to Australia politically, economically, socially and culturally.
The Labour Party seemed to have tapped into the growth of the game at grassroots level, the Socceroos and Matildas success, and the opportunities the sports can bring to Australia through increasing our links across Asia and the World.
Not hard really. Makes you wonder why The Liberal party haven't taken the initiative over the years as they have continued to pour disproportionate amounts into Rugby Union and Rugby League.
Disproportionate to the numbers who play, and the countries the National teams meet.
Which ever party you vote for, football fans can at least be pleased about the benefits the game will gain from a Rudd Labour Government.

If it's related to the national side then it belongs here.

The deal to put it on seven was an absolute disaster. A handful of highlights at 1:00am... absolutely disgraceful.

Yes games are on Fox, but that is club football. You should be able to watch your national team on free to air, which is what happens overseas.

Even SBS didn't complain about FOXTEL getting the rights to all the games because they know its good for the sport.
I can't see Rudd delivering, he has many policies but hasn'tcome up with a way to pay for them

What was the LA Galaxy game like on 10 the other night?
If Fox loose the Socceroo rights then the A league money will be halved, mark my words.

Thought this topic needed reviving. So what happened? No free to air with Australia v Qatar.....Rudd's first broken promise or....???

it was a gung ho election promise.
firstly he has to come up with a way of changing the broadcasting services act proving socceroo matches are "inaacessable" to the majority of the population.
secondly, he has to convince the FFA powerbrokers to settle for less money.
thirdly, he has the FOXTEL/PBL/Telstra backlash to deal with.
if it happens, dont expect anything until after the 2010 world cup.

quite possibly true but I hope your wrong with the time frame
the only thing the government need to do is work with fox and any FTA station willing and have the national games live.
if fox can do it with aussie rules then there is an easy fix and no one has to loose not even fox as the money they get will be for national games only.

If it goes on a FTA station expect them to bury it at some ungodly hour.
Do you really expect a commercial station to put their 'expensive' first week of ratings programs on hold for a Socceroo match......I don't think so Tim!!!

ratings what ratings notice that all of the programs on tonight against the match are repeats! the stations are as weak as.
if they can get the ratings from the fan base then they will want it, they just don't want too pay!

Would be killa if SBS got the rights to the Italian Serie A, many people will watch Serie A live on free to air. SBS used to have a full hour of an Italian Serie A highlights show.

Money doesn't talk it swears.
The game needed cash to start A -League Fox came up with the cash it needed, should have only signed a four year deal not seven.
