Mourinho Also Slams Wenger's Foreign Policy

Former Chelsea manager has mocked Arsene Wenger's team building style, insisting that he has done more for the English game, building a winning team which had an English core.

An English Core

Insisting that he always tried to have an English feel about his Chelsea side - unlike Wenger at Arsenal - Mourinho said: â€œUnlike Arsenal, we tried to build success through a concept of using English players.

â€œWe wanted to project a positive image of Chelsea without running the risk of filling the club with lots of foreign players.

â€œThat would bring us problems in handling the dressing room and in the Press which is sensitive to the use of English players.

â€œThe people in England donâ€™t easily forgive clubs which misrepresent their championship with a complete intake of foreign footballers.

â€œThe animosity towards Abramovich was due to the idea he was going to turn Chelsea into a depot of players who came and went just for the sake of spending money.

â€œMy hands were not exactly free to choose my first list of signings. We had to find the right balance to correspond with my idea of success while maintaining a balance between English and foreign players.â€

Not About Money

The debate has picked up wind once again in recent days with the likes of Sepp Blatter and Sir Alex Ferguson all zeroing in on Wenger.

Mourinho - for whom John Terry, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole were regulars when fit - insisted that Roman Abramovich's money had nothing to do with the debate, or indeed his own success.

The Portuguese pointed out that Wenger took a similar route when bringing in the likes of Thierry Henry, Marc Overmars, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit, Freddie Ljungberg and Sylvian Wiltord.

â€œDo people really think only Chelsea have spent a lot of money?

â€œDid they [Arsenal's players] all come for nothing? Of course not.

"With those players Wenger won championships, he won time and, because he is a manager with admirable ability, he won peopleâ€™s respect.

â€œBut in building success he started in the same place as Chelsea. It was only later Wenger cemented his policy of relying on developing young players.â€

the other managers are just jelous cause wenger can pick the perfect balance of experience and youth to make a perfect team. noone of the english gunners fans care that little of the players are of english background, it is welcomed by all arsenal fans. morihno is pissed cause his foregn talent f.k.d up. if any other english side had the chance to do wat wenger is doing they would do it in a split second!!!

well it is dissapointing that Arsenal only have one english player who is not even a standard. It is afterall the English premier League. However they are a very quality side. Maybe the FA should have regulated this ages ago to avoid this problem in the first place.

Great manager, great prmoter of the game, but now he is out of the league I don't think it is his place to comment! Chelsea in recent times have recruited the best players available from all over the world!

Bring in the quotas over a few years through a phase out and Arsenal will cope! It ain't gonna affect this years team pushing for the title!

As great as a legend everyone (including me) thinks Mourinho is, you have to look at the one major goal he was brought in for and didn't deliver.

I know its gonna sound stupid, he won basically most of them and did it in such a short amount of time but it has to be said. Roman got Mourinho, he wanted the Champions League so he got Mourinho. Did they get it... So technically he didn't deliver and he technically failed.

But I'm sure he'll win it with another club soon, whoever that may be...
