The Qantas Futsalroos have suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat against host-nation Thailand in the final of the ASEAN Futsal Championships played overnight in Bangkok.

Thailand, who have now won the title for the fifth straight time, were backed by a capacity and parochial crowd of 6,000 at the Hua Mak Indoor Stadium and had Australia on the back foot early racing to a four goal advantage at half time. Simon Keith pulled a goal back but ultimately Australia were no match for Thailand who also defeated Australia at the last FIFA Futsal World Championship in 2004.

Australia had earlier made a clean sweep of their three group matches defeating Malaysia (3-2), Indonesia (5-3), Philippines (5-1) before routing Vietnam (4-1) in the semi final.

The 18 goals scored by the team in the tournament spread across eight different goalscorers:- Tuan Cao 4, Scott Dingwall 3, Lachlan Wright 3, Adrian Vizzari 2, Luke Haydon 2, Simon Keith 2, Miles Downie and Scott Manson.

Coach Scott Gilligan will now turn his focus towards May’s 16-nation AFC Futsal Championship in Japan.

The AFC Futsal Championship is held annually with the next FIFA Futsal World Championship to be held in 2008.
