AUstralian U/17's failed to Qualify
The under 17's Australian team have not qualified for the 2008 world cup after losing to Korea 3-1 and then later drawing 0-0 with China, in a game that was a must win.
The Australian Under 17 women's have commenced their qualifying campaign for the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with a 3-1 defeat overnight against Korea Republic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
After a scoreless first half the Koreans scored three goals in eight minutes just after the break before striker Kyah Simon pulled a goal back on the hour mark.
Australia must now beat China by two goals on Monday to progress to the semi finals and remain in contention for qualification for the first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which will be held in New Zealand in 2008.
“My players did very well, it was just a few pieces of naïve defending that caused our loss,†said Australian coach Mike Mulvey. “Korea are a very strong team, we saw them in January and knew they would be tough.
“We had a few chances to score and maybe if we had the rub of the green things would be a bit different. But the girls put in their best and I’m happy to have this team play for me and Australia.â€

The Australian Under 17 women's team have been eliminated in their qualifying campaign for the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup following a scoreless draw overnight with China in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Australian side required a two goal victory to progress to the semi finals following a 3-1 defeat against Korea Republic in the opening match on Saturday.
Australia were unable to break the deadlock despite having the better of their highly regarded opponents for much of the match which was played in hot and humid conditions. After a tense first half Australia carved out a several goalscoring opportunities with Sophie Hogben and Rhali Dobson coming close with strikes on goal.
“I think we showed what we are capable of but at the same time we also showed what we were missing,†said Australian coach Mike Mulvey.
“We need a bit of craft in the last third of the pitch and didn’t take the chances that we created. Having said that, I’m happy with the way we played in this tournament and I told the girls that we have to understand defeat if we are to eventually win.â€
