Nah, AVB got out-coached by Big Sam tbh. They set up to frustrate and try to score from set pieces and quick breaks, and it worked perfectly. As United have found, teams will do that to you and it's up to you to work out how to break them down.

I think AVB's still looking for the right combinations and style of play. I said a couple of weeks ago that we weren't that good defensively and had ridden our luck, and sadly that was proved to be true. Paulinho and Dembele are more 'engine room' CMs than DMs, and I think he was wrong to drop Soldado for Defoe. When you have so many changes to personnel, some poor performances are to be expected.

Not sure how balls from wide areas would have helped against a deep defence tbh. Low balls get cut out and high balls get taken by the keeper or nodded away by their couple of lumpy centre halves. I can't see Defoe winning much in the air.
