What you do with your advantage is up to you.
Gomes threw it away.

From a neutral point of view, this is no way the referee's fault. He didn't pay handball or advantage so why the hell did Gomes put the ball down?

Yes nani should have shown a bit more sportsmanship after handling the ball on purpose, but the referee didn't see that incident.

uggh i wish i'd never mentioned the possibility of advantage.....

no whistle = no foul = gomes fault. it should have been handball but it should have been a penalty before that anyway!

The referee never signalled that it was advantage! He signalled that there was no penalty then just ran back. If the player doesn't know what the hell is going on and that happens as a Ref its then on you for not communicating the decision correctly and therefore should have been taken as a free kick. People keep saying the ref didn't see the handball, fair enough, BUT THE LINO DID and he put his flag up.

The linesman didn't put a flag up until well after the united players were making their way back to the centre circle and spud fans approached him. The referee kept his hands behind his back the whole time and neer looked like bringing the whistle to his mouth (all this was well demonstrated on MOTD) so there was no reason for Gomes to assume (this is the key word here) there was a free kick.

Gomes:

"He did not gesture in any way to play on, like you would normally expect. When I put the ball down on the floor, he started gesturing with his shoulders.

"He is supposed to use his hands. It was not clear to anyone. It was only when I saw Scholes shouting at Nani to shoot that I reacted.

"Even the linesman was confused. He told me he did not know what the ref gave.

"He said he saw the handball and told me to go back to the goal, that he would tell the ref what he saw."

When a referee awards a free kick he blows his whistle. He didn't do that either.

Should have awarded a penalty and shown a red card to the spurs player for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

I have no problems with the advantage rule when there is an advantage to be given, it's not like Gomes had quickly released the ball and we were on a counter, we stayed in the penalty area so no advantage whatsoever was gained, therefore when Nani put the ball in the net, the goal should have been disallowed for the correct free kick to be taken!

he did communicate with the player... nani was the one that asked him wat it was, and the ref sed play on..... if gomes wasnt sure what was going on, then he shoulda asked the ref

I'm pretty sure when you have 70,000 in old trafford screaming after a penalty decision it can be difficult to hear a whistle.

If Gomes was looking for a hand waving gesture to wave play on he would also have seen the referee whose hands were behind his back the whole time not bring a whistle to his mouth.

kop i agreed with torres, he did the write thing.... technically the ball was stopped, then the defender passed it back, so thats play on

if gomes didnt think it was play on, then why did he try stopping the goal???

I've read that article before and Poll himself even says that he wouldn't have allowed the goal.

Gomes was a retard. Manchester United players did nothing wrong. Complaining Spurs supporters are the unsporting ones. The end.

Had it have been the match winning goal I might have a different outlook, however whilst Clattenburg mucked up by leaving it unclear, and Nani was a tad unsporting, at the end of the day we were never going to score in a month of Sundays and I'm reasonably happy that Kaboul didn't get sent off.

I can guarantee that Nani won't be popular on the return leg at WHL. Hope he's got private health cover.

ugghh you're painful. he didnt signal advantage, you are right, but he didnt signal a freekick either. SO DONT PUT THE F-ING BALL DOWN! And i was unaware that the lino were the ones that give the final decisions. Gomes mucked up end of story. Poor refereeing but dumb as fk goalkeeping.

It's not the fans. We're going to set Wilson loose on him. He gets booked every week anyway.
