I'm sensing a bit of hypocrisy here. Normally, when a team fields a weakened side, you're all over them like a rash, but apparently it's OK if England or Belgium do it.

If it's acceptable for the national team to manage their squad as the manager sees fit, why is it the opposite when a league team does it?

Don't play semantics with me. In a two horse race, if you think Belgium's game plan failed, you must think England's game plan succeeded (since they were so similar), thereby endorsing the use of squad players.

I personally accept that all managers do just that, manage the resource at their disposal, and have no problem with it.

Just because I say a game plan succeeded (which I never said either) doesn't mean I say I agree with that game plan.

IMO, the defender had zero chance of playing the ball as he was well behind and simply hacked the forward. Since it would have been an open goal, having already gone round the keeper, that should be red.

If he's going away from goal or at some ridiculous angle, fair enough, give him a yellow.

I agree. And as you are even older than me, you may know the answer to this. Before the so called professional foul straight red came in (1980?), wasn't a yellow always given?

New Name Not Needed, here’s the thing. Back in ye olde days all they got was a yellow. Then the penny dropped that wasn’t enough of a sanction. So they tried to go to the commonsense thing which was (as long it wasn’t violent) it was a penalty and a yellow if inside the box, a red card if it was a DOGSO outside the box seeing a lousy free-kick wasn’t enough punishment.

I can't find the law written where it states both feet must remain on the goal line.
