I'm pretty sure it was 5th... and there was a fairly large points difference too!! I did say that for the last half of the year we would easily have been in the top 3 on form. It was a great last half of the year and based on that Chris should probably get appointed, but sometimes there are other things which need to be considered. Personally, I'd love for him to be given a second year but it's not my call.Ginger2106 wrote:Jogger you are smoking something heavy if thats your outlook on it. Whatever targets were set I am sure finishing 4th and making the Semi's of the cup would have been seen as a good achivement. ( of course Winning the League would have been the piority ). Considering the number of new players brought into the 1st team and how Chris was able to get the best out of the Younger lads, I can see a bright future if we can keep these players and secure a few more which is hard without a Coach appointed.
The AGM is Tuesday and the new Committee will have to act fast on securing a coach.

I think it's poor form from the Vale not to have not already appointed Chris, what is the Club only going to give Chris one year to prove himself as a coach? He has been very loyal to the Vale in past & the ''CLUB'' should give him more than one year & I wouldn't think that there would be anyone at the VALE that doesn't think Chris deserves a second year & if there is they are wankers.jogger wrote: I'm pretty sure it was 5th... and there was a fairly large points difference too!! And if they do give him the job now his already behind the 8 ball BIG TIME...
Steve Cook is 100x better coach now than he was in his 1st & 2nd season coaching. Like players coaches learn & improve with time & experience. And thank god our Club gave him 3 years, neally religated 2years then won the lot...
If the Vale was to interview for a new coach what would they be looking for???
1. someone who would command respect from the Club & the Playing group.
2. someone in, or just out of the game who has a good knowledge of the game,
SAASL Premier League knowledge would be an advantage.
3. someone dedicated who wants to coach the Club.
4. someone who is respected though the football community & able to attract players.
5. someone who is loyal & passionate about getting the Club success would be a bonus.
6. a good bloke
I wouldv'e thought Chris ticks all the boxes jogger to say this bull sh*t about the committee gave him tasks & targets what a load of bollocks let the bloke coach,
committee go cook some sausages & mark some pitches
just let the coach, coach...

not even remotely close to being on the committee nuggett... selecting the right coach is surely a critical thing and surely that must include having targets and reviewing the season each year. Personally I think Chris did extremely well and had a very successful year for a first time coach. He will only be better for it and that will see the Vale only get better under his guidance.KING NUGGETT wrote:jogger WTF are you on about what things don't impact what decision ? Not sure where you got that one Lefty. We haven't made a song and dance about it this year but this is probably the first year where Simo hasn't been contacted by 5 or more clubs seeing if he wants to coach, he's probably only had 3.
He's on committee again so pretty sure he has committed to us.

Been there for a long time and had a lot of good players through there and the Holy Grail of the Div 1 League title has eluded him still.
Just throwing it out there but has the club ever considered a change??

Re: Coaches for 2011
Of course Simo doesn't pick himself to be the coach. He reports to the club about whats happening on the field and has a lot of useful ideas and thoughts for things off the field. The committee picks the coach and he is not apart of that decision. If there is anything coaching related discussed at committee, he leaves the room.
The reality is that the club has tried to keep Simo more than think about replacing him. He gets approached by a lot of Amateur clubs to go and coach them and he has turned them down, even though the money and facilites other clubs have is far superior to ours.
Considering we have only been in Div 1 for 4 years, he has done an amazing job. The first year we were picked to get relegated and we finished 2nd. Since then we have finished 3rd for 3 years. In that time, we reached our first ever cup final and won, the reserves continue to win trophies and the club has maintained a core group of players who get involved with the club. Are you suggesting that a coach who's worst season is finishing 3rd should get sacked?

Good Point Jay BUT from watching Ingle Farm (not every week) I believe that the club COULD or SHOULD have won a title in those years, as you say not the best facilities in the world but stronger than alot of better established club. The window of opportunity for this side may be shutting but the other thing is Ingle Farm and Simmo have never considered or tried to "Buy a League" the guys that play there play there because they love the club, Very similar to Elizabeth Vale in my opinion!

He is paid by the club to do 1 job and 1 job only and that is to coach the team.
Anything else can only lead to distracting him from his main task and what he is paid to do.
If he has ideas and useful thoughts that can improve the club maybe he should become the coaching director or something else and give up coaching.

Fair points LRO and we would like to think that we have been good enough to win the league in one of those 3 years. The year that Vale won the league is probably the year that we felt we had the best chance because as you said, they didn't buy the league to win. I would love to have the spending money that some other clubs do but money doesn't always bring success or happiness. We have a great retention rate with players and we only pay a small amount to players in a system that is fair and equitable. Its nothing against clubs that do spend extra on player payments but were not in a position to do that.
The other years we missed out are our own fault. We had opportunities to win the league and lost crucial games. We did things a little differently this year and it helped a little but still didn't give us the result we were looking for.
I don't believe in window of opportunities as you've only got to look at Gardens, who were almost relegated in 08/09 but picked up 6-8 quality players and won the league. Some of our guys who have been at the club for a while are getting older but they are still contributing a lot also.

Ok, times up.
Are you a committee memeber, coach or President of a club? If not, how would you know what works best.
Simo is barely paid to coach the club and when you take out what he puts in as sponsorship, he almost pays to be at the club. The committee is very democratically run and the committee get and opportunity to ask him about how the team is playing. This allows us to leave the coaching to Paul and not have to get involved. Much the same, Paul hears about what's going on within the committee and doesn't need to get tied up with the general running of the club.
The system might not work for your club, but the model in place works well for Ingle Farm. Simo is man enough to fall on his sword if he didn't think he could get any more out of the players and the committee would step in if we thought the same. When either Simo or myself leave the club, then things may change.

And since you asked the question at the club I am at if you are coaching you are not allowed to be on the committee - we see it as a conflict of interest.
Of course the coach can have a chat to people on the committee if he has ideas etc that he would like brought forward but the bottom line is he is not involved in voting on these decisions.
Dont even know Paul so its nothing personal - I just find it strange that a coach can be on the committee at a Div 1 club.
Would be interested to hear if any other Div 1 coaches are on the committee????
Can understand it in the lower divs as the coach would be expected to help out more and might be involved in more things than just coaching due to finances, resources etc but at Div 1 level you would think that the coach just coaches and thats it.

not that I'm 100% aware of what the financial side of it is like, but highlighted in bold is your answer ! Re: Coaches for 2011
He's been coach for 8 years and had a lot of success. Before he arrived, the club nearly folded. Now we sit in Div 1, we've won trophies, we have 5 teams competing in competitions, we've just installed new flood lights and will hopefully begin work on new clubrooms. For a tiny club, a lot has been achieved both on and off the field and Paul is a big reason for that.terminator wrote:Can understand it in the lower divs as the coach would be expected to help out more and might be involved in more things than just coaching due to finances, resources etc but at Div 1 level you would think that the coach just coaches and thats it.
I think you'll find that no club in Div 1, 2 or 3 has a coach on the committee. Doesn't mean that its wrong.
Besides, he is a member, he is entitled to stand and be voted onto the committee. If club members didn't want him on, they wouldn't vote him on.
