However, most decent stores will go further than this in their policies as a matter of good faith and good customer service.
In this situation I don't think you're entitled to any money but yo'd think given the circumstances the club would do the right thing. If you think they aren't going to have a team at that level then keep an eye out because then the product you have paid for is no longer available and you would be legally entitled to a refund.
Hope the club does the right thing by you and good luck with it, because you're going to need that money for lawyers.
Not sure if it would be correct to say "changed their mind" about using the product, sounds more like they are now unable to use the product due to location....It's not really a portable product so I doubt Port Pirates can offer them the same service in a different location. Must admit though, Pirates is a suitable name in this instance!
The service paid for is still there, the service paid for is still available. It's his choice not to travel there. He has "changed his mind" about bringing the kids there.
I'm no lawyer but from my basic law studies that's what I think consumer law would say.

Have heard of several court cases involving University fees where the University was ordered to return fees when a student enrolled at another University....because the enrolling student changed their mind....or found a better course.

Never discussed a politician, sportsman, religion, journalist, club, country on a public forum ?
I'd say a junior soccer club, that one would imagine are struggling to meet there water bills amongst other things, would deserve a tad more respect than any of those you've listed above.

I would say that someone embroiled in a divorce asking for a refund due to unforseen circumstances would deserve a tad more respect (understanding) also.
If he can't turn to the football community, via this forum, for support, where can he turn....obviously would still like his lads to play football !

Wasn't referring to the original poster, just numpties like you that think you have an answer for everything
Is that how you coach the kids?
No, numpty boy
It wasn't a classy comment i admit, but then nor are you.
although the numpties line is classic.
Lets just hope that Pirates & the parent come to an amicable agreement & you can sleep soundly at night.

As I said, not a lawyer and only did a very basic law course. Personally, I hope you're right because he's about to embark on one of the toughest year(s) of his life. Even if amicable it will drag as finances/children are discussed/argued/dragged through the courts, so he needs a break.
I think that some misconceptions need to be cleared up here (and yes, I am connected to Pirates):
1. The amount paid for the 2 players is $400, not $500.
2. The club will refund any deposits paid if it is unable to field the team that a player has been registered for. Obviously this is not decided now, but closer to the beginning of the season, as most small sided teams are only finalised then.
3. The refund request was discussed by the committee on Thursday evening, with the father being informed of the outcome on Friday by email. After receiving his reply, the chairman of the club contacted him by email to say that the deposit would be refunded in full. This decision was made prior to this posting on footballnewsforum.
4. The club will cover the cost of the kit which has already been ordered for the 2 players, in the hope that they can recruit 2 replacements of the same size.
It is clearly stated in the registration document that deposits are not refundable (save in the circumstances mentioned above). Most clubs have a similar policy, and most clubs are in the same boat financially as Pirates. Pirates have refunded the deposit as a goodwill gesture, and it is sad to see the Pirates name being dragged through the mud on this forum when it was totally unnecessary.
Hindsight is 20/20 vision, a compassionate result and a good one....well done to Port Pirates....However, judging by some of the other responses on here from representatives of other Clubs, airing the issue may have been of benefit to them if similar instances arose at their clubs.
