Getting paid should not happen in the Amateur League full stop! There is a reason why this is league is the Amateur one - I believe if players wish to get paid they should do so in the Federation league.

All players should be playing for their respective clubs for the love of it, not for monetary rewards.

Nugget. Whilst I agree with you about re-imbursing player costs. I will go in saying that this is not reflective of what actually transpires!

We had discussions with player(s) first hand because I was the one having the initial conversations. And the dollars we were prepared to offer which would have been well more than expenses (i.e. travel/petrol etc etc) was not enough for the "player of calibre is worth".

At the end of the day if you have the $$$ to pay you can buy the talent.

I would put it this way. If Parafield Gardens didn't pay players going/acceptable rates would they be as successful? It is my firm opinion is a big fat NO!

Sorry Nugget... $$$ for compensation for expenses is crap!

Here is a bit of a contentious post

Tell me nugget... if I personally offered your top 6 performers of last season $1000 for the season win lose or draw and 1 training session a week to come and play for Beograd. Do you think i would get interest for transfers from Parafield Gardens to Beograd?

most all of our squad are on less than the $100.00 in the SAASL Rules a Win & GARDENS only pay for a Win.
Believe that or not but it's the honest to God Truth...
I know most have had offers well above what we have been paying them for years, but they choose to stay...
And there loyalty has been repaid in Silverware.

THAT IS THE FACTS! SO OFFER AWAY! WHAT YOU DON'T THINK THEY'VE ALL HAD OFFERS FROM OTHER CLUBS???

Good point Nugget. Why play for a div 2 or 3 team for the same money when you can play for a div one side!

If you club cannot afford payments dont pay and be happy where you are. What should Wolves and Wigan complain that Man U and Man City have money to spend??? If the clubs have it let them spend it. If it worth spending 30K a year on players to win 5K in prizemoney prob not, but we dont play for money or do we????

There are members who want to keep the club alive. Apparently the new committee is looking at fielding one team next year and slowly rebuilding from there. It is admirable that this group want keep the club alive. However, alot of work is needed sorting out alot of on field and off field logistics. Can they afford to pay the lease at Grange with 1 team? Players fee's would more than likely increase, but there was a culture at the club where little or noone paid. It was essentially bankrolled by one man.

Personally, it might be good for the club to start a fresh (one team) if it can find a hard working committee who can change the culture around.

To me, the key to a strong football club is a reliable income source, a secure lease on grounds and a reasonable number of helpers to help around the club.
Another key point that helps is having an junior set up or an association with a junior set up that cultivates the desire to play for the senior team.
Elizabeth Downs were struggling in 1989, there were very few helpers around the club, player numbers were down and they were relegated to Division 3.
1n 1990 they began rebuilding...on the park with Marty Craig as coach and off the park ...23 years on they are one of the stronger more vibrant clubs.

On the other hand, I am currently involved with Southern Knights who formed in 1995 in Division 6...since then they managed to gain promotion up to Division 2 where they have been one of the mainstays since 2006. Although they are co-located with South Adelaide Panthers at O'Sullivan Beach, they were previously at 3 other grounds. They currently receive no income from bar takings or canteen takings and rely totally on sponsorship and membership/registration fees. Furthermore, those that began the club...Colin Mooney, Colin Macpherson and others are still working behind the scenes to keep the Knights going.
In the 3 seasons I have been around the Club, players had paid $5 a home game to play (to cover referees fees)....all the while the Knights have been usually a strong competetive side....but the contribution off the park and at trainings had diminished.
If however, they had their own Clubrooms and had an income source from home games (and Friday night trainings) and could offer some form of "payment" as a reward for training and winning it would not harm the club in the slightest.
Hopefully under the guidance of Ben Smith, 2012 will be an improved year for the club and rekindle some of the Knights passion for football !

As they say..."if money can't buy you happiness.....just try another shop !"

It was a very simmilar story at the Gardens when I joined the committee in 1999. Our Club was A bit luckier in a lot of ways, most importantly we had the lease of the Club & as such had destiny in our own hands. The year 2000 was a turning point for our Club, we got relegated to Div.2 for only the second or third time in the Clubs History I believe at the time Gardens was the longest serving Div.1 Club.
I'll never forget Gardens & SAASL Legend Vick Jones (RIP) running the line put his flag up for Off Side only to be waved away by the Ref the Jets went on to score & Gardens got relegated! Never forget after being waved away Vick chucked the flag in the air & walked home such was the disappointment of getting relegated. Gardens struggled to put a Reserve Team on the field that year & such had a very fragile in 1st Team.
Neil Bonner had been the coach for the 3-4 yrs & knew something had change, Barrie Cook who always wanted to coach the Gardens was approached by Neil & Neil said "I'll step down if you can bring some players", which Barrie agreed & Neil did.
Barrie took over at the end of the 2000 season knowing the Gardens were to play Div.2 next year, Barrie delivered his promise of bringing players, with Steve Cook, Barrie Crook, Noel Flounders, Terry Williams, & the Black magician Bertie. After searching & searching for a Keeper, Barrie came up with a Plan to turn a AFL Footballer into a Keeper, enter Mark McConnell it was a master stroke & Mark become one of the best keepers I've seen in Div.1
In 2001 our committee identified were we needed to improve, mostly we needed more people to use the Club. Then we needed football to pay for its self, strips, Referee Fees, Association Fees, Equipment ect. ect. I took on the Sponsorship role that year & our Sponsorship increased to $32,000 from $5,000 the previous year then all of a sudden the money pressure was off our heads.
We field 3 Senior Teams in 2001, & it was unanimously agreed that our Club start our Junior Club up again, which we did after letter box dropping & working our butts off, I think we were able to field 6 Teams with E&D. Then things started not only improving in the Club but also on the field. 2001 we Finished second in the League only +1 Goal difference in Div.2 & was Promoted back to Division One! It felt like we Won the Championship! In 2002 Barrie improved our Playing group with the inclusions of John Foat, Karl Mazza & Peter Nezda wow what additions, they all said we were to old & too slow, sponsorship increased to a Club record $42,000 that was Football paid & a New Veranda!
In 2002 we we're too Old & we we're too Slow, but Ultimately that year 2002 we were too Good!!!
DIV.1 LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!
I went on to become Chairman for the next 6 Years, when I stepped down as Chairman of the Gardens in 2008 we had X3 Senior Men's Teams, X1 Senior Women's Team, X20 Junior Teams, X3 Cricket Teams, X3 8 Ball Teams, X2 Dart Teams.

What the GARDENS have achieved over the last 12 years hasn't come easy, it was hours & hours of many many volunteers time, energy & hard work.
Im very Proud of what WE the GARDENS have Achieved!!!

So you can all say we paid for our Players & our Success, guess what Yes we did with Hard FK'N Work!

Ga pala aren't you involved with fulham? I remember playing against a fulham team approx 11 years ago who were paying a quality striker by the name of malia more than a pretty penny. Those in glass houses!

As for lion I wish you all the best. Quality club with quality people involved. Always played with passion and no matter what their position in the league would always give us a hard hit out. I hope u guys survive and come back bigger and stronger for the experience
