Germany (inc West Germany) have won more penalty shoot-outs than any other side at Euro 2008. They have won five of the six that they have been in – losing only one.

Spain finally won a penalty shoot out on the 22nd of June: after losing against Belgium in 1986, England in 1996 and South Korea in 2002 on this very same day, “La Roja” defeated Italy in the quarter finals before dispatching Russia in the semis.

Following their 3-2 semi-final victory over Turkey, Germany have now qualified for the European Championship final for a record sixth time.

Spain are in the final of a major international tournament for the first time in 24 years.

Their last meeting came in a friendly in Spain in February 2003. The home side prevailed 3-1 thanks to a brace from Raul Gonzales with Guti finding the third. Fredi Bobic managed to score the German goal on that day.

Their only other meeting since the Millenium came in August 2000, when the Germans managed to thrash their Spanish counterparts 4-1 in Hannover. Mehmet Scholl and Alexander Zickler both scored a brace for Germany, whilst Raul replied. Zickler’s two goals that day were the only goals that he managed in international football.

Their last competitive meeting came at the 1994 World Cup Finals in USA. Their Group C fixture ended in a 1-1 draw, with Giokoetxea opening the scoring for the Spanish before German goalscoring legend Jurgen Klinsmann equalised early in the second half.

Spain are currently unbeaten in 20 matches.

In both friendly and competitive games, the Germans have suffered just one defeat in their last 11 games, with that loss coming in the group game against Croatia.

The Germans have been very impressive at holding on to a lead; winning 17 of the 19 games (out of the last 25) in which they found themselves out in front, including their 3-2 quarter-final win against Portugal.

Spain have scored the most goals (11), fired the most shots (83) and have hit the target the most times (40) at Euro 2008.

Germany though, make the most of their chances, as they have the best goals to shots conversion rate (18.52%).

Spain have reached their third European Championship final. In 1964 they beat the Soviet Union (2-1) and in 1984 they lost to France (2-0).

Only Germany (six) and the Soviet Union (four) have appeared in more finals in this tournament than Spain (three).

Michael Ballack has committed the most fouls at Euro 2008 – 17.

spain were the better side.

but i thought germany were unlucky on occasions,,,denied a penalty in the first half for a handball (have seen them given for much less)

should silva have been sent off :?: i think so & finally in the dying minutes gomez denied a chance from point black range for a questionable foul.

Spain were also denied an almost certain goal as Lehmann hand balled it outside the area which would've resulted in a red card to Lehmann so should he have been sent off? There was a clear tustle in the box and though you may not like to admit it, it was a foul as outlined by FIFA, besides Mario Gomez was craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap, no way was he going to score, almost as bad as Luca Toni....except that Luca Toni had more chances.

It was more harder to qualify when it was just eight teams who participated, but hard to win is a naff statement

World Cups are as hard to win as Euros

the Euro might have a tougher group stage, but the knockouts are same strength. Why people play down either the WC or Euro is beyond me.
