If he were young and in his peak right now he wouldnt even come close to being the best player in the world. He always talks big players down saying they are not even close to being the best. It seems like he is comparing them to himself. Well i believe many players were and are better then him notably zidane, kaka, c.ronaldo, Ronaldinho etc etc.
he would still be the best
no your wrong. He would be good but not the best.

He was second, gazza was the best player in the tournament by a long way.

Being top goalscorer doesn't mean you are the best player. eg. Maradona was in 86 and not Lineker.

Not only because he was topscorer, but he played good football in the second best performing team in the competition. To take the starting spot away from Vialli, getting ahead of Serena in the pecking order (Serena scored 22 goals in 88/89) meant he was playing well and finishing too.

You came 3rd that year.

As for the rest you could say the same about Gazza. Not likely to be in the starting line up until Robson picked up an "injury".

I think you're being harsh on germany then, to have yourself as second.

Look at Italia 90, Gazza was the best player in the tournament by miles.[/quote]

u reckon? there were many standouts in that tournament. milla, schillaci, Gazza, a young lad named baggio, and so on. Not sure if he was best player though
