Ok, now Ive heard it all. I was at that game. Game originally scheduled at Norwood did not go ahead as ref said pitch was too small and outside minimum regulations, even though we played there two season in a row, no ref beforehand had problems. When we measured the pitch to prove that is was within the limits, he ignored it. With the ref carrying on and joking with these Tubies players, well it sure didnt look suspicious did it when he called game off!
Then, it was at Steve Jarvis Park (not Ramsay Park), the same ref who was on first name basis with the entire Tubies team (I knew Ziggy from Tubies there at the time and he even apologised to US for some of the goings on) and ref proceeded ripping Eagles off big time even though a div 5 team was matching it with a big Div 1 team at the time. We DID have a player sent off and there were a few bad tackles in that game. One player got hit when he began gesturing to some of the supporters. He was probably lucky he didnt get more. As for weapons on display, seriously that is just utter bullshit.
So whoever told you this story is full of shit, either that or your memory is extremely lacking.
Mate, I do not condone what happened at Strikers the other night (I have even stated I think they should be kicked out) but I cant stand these overdone full of crap stories of yesteryear that get blown out.
I was at the first game, and even though I had shocking flu and fever, I can remember the huge gum tree crossing the line. I don't think I was hallucinating.
I know the names of many players, even if we've never been formally introduced. It would be a poor ref who did not know more player's names than I.
As I said, I was working and didn't attend the rearranged fixture. I just knew it was played up north.
One player sent off, admitted bad tackles. Little rascals! What made the Tubies player react to the crowd I wonder? But hey, he was lucky he didn't get more from those innocent tykes!!
The person who told me was adamant he saw people holding chains, bats and lumps of wood. I don't know his present whereabouts for you to confront him on that.
My memory is not as sharp as I would like, the same as you I would guess.

As for your further comments about having some Harley riders amongst your club, big fucking deal. Most people I know have stories of proper hard men in action. Just because you ride a bike does not automatically turn you into a hard man. By the way, I ride a bike, ergo, point proven. You see, you have resorted to those same arguments of others on here that you have disparaged.

Sorry, but that's the sort of attitude that I thought disappeared long ago.
When did assaulting someone become acceptable?
I thought football hooliganism died a death decades ago, but apparently some neanderthals remain.
Think he was only stating what happened and that he was a very lucky person........ah........maybe :|

He said she said. I know what I know and remember clearly, I wasnt sick, (nor stoned)
Clumps of wood and chains and bats? C'man, next thing there were axes, machetes and SKS assault rifles!
All I said is that the Harleys made SOME people possibly feel intimidated. Nothing more, nothing less. If it didnt make any difference to you and some others, well good for you.

I thought football hooliganism died a death decades ago, but apparently some neanderthals remain.
Was referring and putting perspective to a game in the early 80's so maybe that partly answers your query! Doesnt anyone read properly around here any more?
Bomber, if what you meant was "he could have easily got more although he wouldn't have deserved it" then I apologise.
Mind you, comments like: "All I am saying is if you dish enough shit from the mouth, someone may eventually help clean your shit with blood", seem to indicate that you think that assaulting someone for what you call "banter" is acceptable.

Again it seems something has been lost in translation. Some filthy shit gets said at times, NOT what I would call banter, so no I do not condone such actions. But you can say things that hit "below the belt" and I have seen people get a decent belting for such behaviour, more so in general life (pubs, nightclubs etc) rather than at games, however there is always that risk. It happens.
My point is that good hearted banter (and by banter I mean you can still take the piss without being vulgar and abusive) is great and I love still to this day having a bit on the sidelines with 99% of opposing supporters.
This is why I enjoy feds football a bit more these days as there is plenty of that. Ask Colin Alagich what its like whenever Croydon play Pirates!
End of the day, I like the fact that I can have a beer with a Modbury supporter, a West Adelaide supporter, Raiders supporter, whoever and take the mickey - I take it, I give a bit back. Many I share this so called banter with are people I have met via this forum. There are some fantastic characters out there on and off the field and I hope this aspect of the game never dies where you give your team all during the game, but enjoy a beer and chat with the opposition after the game.
Having said all that, I hope to see a few of these characters on Sunday when I get to the Pontian v Easties game on Sunday.

Getting on a bit there Bomber

I attend quite alot of Superleague football, mostly Galaxy games.
And i for one can say that "banter" is at a minimal, the only time you hear a supporter is if they call the Ref a tosser which is then followed by a long silence as the old fart needs to get his breath back.

Nothing like being on the pitch on a Sunday and hearing some of the one liners that come from the crowed....banter at it's best.

My 2cents

I can assure you I hear it, cop it but pretty much ask for it every week so its there, but would agree the wit of banter is fading.

I feel its my duty when I retire to help bring it back, god knows Ive copped enough over the years.

But yes there is a big difference between banter and just being offensive.

Being a keeper you would expect that (the only person on the pitch who plays football but cannot actually play football  )

And you very right, racial and out right abusive comments are not good for the game.

Hi Bomber, I don't want to misrepresent you, but ....
"But you can say things that hit "below the belt" and I have seen people get a decent belting for such behaviour, more so in general life (pubs, nightclubs etc) rather than at games, however there is always that risk. It happens."

In saying "It happens" it sounds like you are condoning assaulting someone if what is said is sufficiently provocative.
I'm saying, that no matter what someone says to you, you have no right to assault them.
Can you please confirm that you agree there is no excuse for assaulting someone just because of a verbal exchange.

Not really, I wont do that. If someone said something in my face derogatory about my mother (for example), yes you may cop something more than a word or two. A lot depends on HOW it is said. There is a difference.
I dare say most would do the same.
Therefore whilst you may say I have no right to assault them, I would say they have no right to use derogatory terms in the first place.

Hi - I am a journalist at the Sunday Mail, and am investigating the recent BESA incident you are discussing on this forum. I have spoken with the parties involved and the police, but am interested in hearing from people who were at the match and saw the incident, or who have photos/video of the incident.

I invite anyone with information to call me on 8206 2722 or email me at nankervisd@sundaymail.com.au

Question - if this happened at the Aussie Rules in the amateur league, would you give it as much attention? Just curious.

Absolutely we would. A referee has been terribly injured after a mass attack at what should have been a friendly sporting match. What type of sport, or league, is irrelevant.

As for signing up - I followed the instructions as given in the form, and declared my employment status as directed. It still allowed me to sign up.

I fail to see what good is going to come of a media story.

You will either

1. Make the amateur league look bad (I do agree though that the SAASL needs to come out and make a statement here regarding punishment - been a little too quiet for my liking)
2. Make the sport look bad
3. Enrage the these Albanians idiots even further (which knowing what they are capable of isn't a good thing)

Please explain to me what good will come of your story? I fail to see anything good coming out of it... Maybe the Police should be questioned as why they took so long to rock up?

Also, you said you've spoken to both parties? What did BESA have to say for themselves?

David, you have never asked about anything positive in our league/association but when something negative pops up BINGO you guys want to get all over it. Why dont you crawl back from underneath the rock you came from and leave the reporting to the Craig Laird at the messenger who does a fantastic job.

David I can understand you entering the forum to try and increase the validity of your article. As a journalist, it is your responsibility to get the best information available as sources for your work.

However, I do agree with the sentiments of other forumites in that you are only looking to benefit yourself with getting further information via a public forum for your article.

Also, if you feel that this is such a big deal and deserves to have a newspaper article dedicated to it (which it probably does), I believe that you should have approached another journalist to write the article in the days immediately following the incident, not a week later when it suits you.

Re: BESA SUPPORTERS SEND REFEREE TO HOSPITAL

I think it's great that this story is getting some wider exposure.
No one likes bad publicity... and it might be just what is needed prompt the authorities / SAASL to do something about it and go after these guys.
For example:
- If the article mentions that the police were called an hour before and rocked up late, it might get them to rock up on time the next time.
- If SAASL is exposed for lack of action, it might actually get them to do something about it this time and also in the future.
