Re: What are you listening to now?
I had the English version (and original). Actually I had two 12" singles with different b-sides so this may explain why.
bloke in hawkesy's pub wrote:June 1983 "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)"
Original single release on Situation 2 label. Peaked at #2 on the UK independent charts. Track later included on the UK version of The Icicle Works.
May 1984 "Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly)"
Retitled and remixed for the US. Track included on the US version of The Icicle Works.

Re: What are you listening to now?
I'd only even known it as Birds Fly and that was the title when it was shown on Suzanne Dowling's Rock Arena not long after I came here.

Re: What are you listening to now?
I never knew it was retitled but as I said above I had two 12" singles of it, both with different b-sides. I wonder how it's listed on the best of album. Let me check.

Re: What are you listening to now?
Definitely says Birds Fly.
Can you think of any other songs that were the same song but retitled to be sold in another market?
I know the Angels were Angel City in the US and the Flowers also changed their name for the same reason, as did Wham, but song title changes???

I don't consider it re-titled just changes in the order and use of brackets.Bodø Glimt wrote:Definitely says Birds Fly.

Just quoted the title embedded in the filmclip.
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown).
Paul Kelly's Coloured Girls changed their name to Gossip for the US I think.
And Echo & The Bunnymen changed their name to "who" for this forum.

Paul Kelly is an Adelaide boy who went to CBC and captained their cricket team.Bodø Glimt wrote:I think they become Paul Kelly And The Dots.swannsong wrote:Paul Kelly's Coloured Girls changed their name to Gossip for the US I think.
Paul Kelly's first band was the High Rise Bombers and then he formed Paul Kelly and The Dots , shortly prior to disbanding I saw them supporting Dire Straits sometime around 1982.
He did an acoustic album "Post"and then went on to form Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls, they didn't change to Gossip, they changed to Paul Kelly & The Messengers for the US market to promote the album Gossip !

I remember the Messengers. I thought the Dots came after the Colored Girls but I guess not. You learn something new every day.

Swannee - If I were A Carpenter
John Swan & Jimmy Barnes - Denton part 1.
John Swan & Jimmy Barnes - Denton
I remember hearing that John Swan (who was a fairly good junior footballer too) would stand in the Elizabeth
City Shopping centre pet shop and deliberately push the door open as people passed by to try and hit them.
Always thought he was technically a better singer than Barnes but never had the musical vehicle to get to
the top. Was rumoured that he could have been the replacement for Bon Scott in AC-DC.

Agree with you there Swanny....your namesake had a much better voice than Jimmy. At least he sang....didn't just scream. :?

Re: What are you listening to now?
I went to a benefit show he did (at the Elizabeth Rugby Club) after his sisters partner/husband was killed when one of Swannee's trucks was involved in an accident. Swannee, Jimmy Barnes and Alan Barnes sang the Ray Charles song Crying Time, a very moving moment.
Swannee also wrote a song called Matthew for his nephew (whose father had been the one killed), great song...
"your fathers wish was to have himself a boy again, that's the way life is.."

Swannee - Matthew
Here's a version of it !
John Swan - Blood Is Thicker Than Water
Not a very well produced song (over-produced - key too high IMO) but some
interesting images from John's past
