Sotirios Kyrgiakos set to extend stay at Liverpool
Sotirios Kyrgiakos Kyrgiakos was signed by former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez
Liverpool centre-back Sotirios Kyrgiakos is set to extend his stay at Anfield for a further 12 months.
Kyrgiakos is thought to have made the required number of appearances last season to trigger the option of a further year to the two-year deal he signed in August 2009.
The 31-year-old Greece international has become a cult figure with the Reds because of his rugged style.
But, he could still be sold with Liverpool set to strengthen in defence.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have confirmed the departure of a number of reserves with former captain Steve Irwin, Nikola Saric, Jason Banton, Deale Chamberlain, Alex Cooper and Sean Highdale all leaving.

Liverpool target Serie A defender in £14m deal
Udinese defender Cristian Zapata claims he is prepared to snub Arsenal and Manchester City to join Liverpool.
The Colombia centre-back says he is close to agreeing a move to Anfield and will complete his switch after this summer's Copa America tournament.
The Reds have turned to Zapata - who can play anywhere along the back four - after losing out to Manchester United in the race for their top target, Blackburn's Phil Jones.
Liverpool have yet to agree a fee with Udinese and the Serie A side will want at least £14million for Zapata, who has two years left on his contract.
The 24-year-old, who is also wanted by Bayern Munich, is in South America preparing for next month's Copa America in Argentina.
He says he is excited by the prospect of joining Liverpool.
"I don't know what to say," he said. "What I can say is that I am very close to Liverpool.
"At the end of the Copa America, we will see what happens with my future.
"I have gained experience, but the time has come for me to make the jump to a big team."

Re: Liverpool 2011/12
Lots of talk about selling unwanted players who have interest elsewhere to fund for new signings such as Cole, Konchesky, Poulsen and more
Lots of talk about Clichy, N'zogbia, Adams coming.
Interesting to see what the final results are with players in and out of Anfield!

WTFRaul Meireles 'up for sale as Liverpool give Juventus their price'
Liverpool are reportedly ready to cash in on Raul Meireles, as Kenny Dalglish looks to reshape his new Kop regime.
The former Porto midfielder enjoyed a promising debut season at Anfield, winning the PFA Fans' Player of the Year, but now it seems he may be surplus to requirements just a year after joining the Reds.
Roy Hodgson paid £11million for the Portuguese international at the start of last season, and the 28-year-old still thrived under Dalglish in a second striker role after Hodgson was sacked in January.
But with the Scotsman seemingly focused on domestic recruitment this summer, reports for The National are claiming he’s willing to sacrifice Meireles, presumably to raise funds for the purchases of Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing and Ipswich striker Connor Wickham.
Juventus are already said to have offered the Reds Felipe Melo in exchange for the tattooed Kop midfielder, but Dalglish rejected the idea of a swap, and instead quoted the Italians a straight £13.5million.
With Jordan Henderson already signed for a whopping £16million, the Anfield giants are well stocked in the central midfielder department, so Meireles may well represent a high-value disposable commodity for the Merseysiders.

Apparently a monetary offer plus Melo for Mereiles was rejected by Liverpool, now LFC are asking for a 15million euro transfer fee and it'll be a done deal

Liverpool Consider Making Bid for £15m Rated Brazilian: Unsettled Diego On Anfield Radar
Liverpool are reportedly considering bidding for Werder Bremen playmaker Diego who this list week was fined a massive €500,000 (£443,000) for storming out of the club’s hotel when learning he was not to start the club’s final game of last season. The Brazilian international is said to be keen on leaving the Bundesliga side whom he joined last summer.
The unsettled playmaker is said to be on Anfield director of football Damien Comolli’s transfer wish-list and the 26 year old may be offloaded by Wolfsburg boss Felix Magath. The former Juventus man also was fined earlier in the season for taking a penalty, which he subsequently missed, which he was not designated to take.
Diego’s overall form over the last campaign was mixed but the pint sized midfielder did weigh in with crucial performances that eventually help steer Wolfsburg away from relegation in what was a very poor season for the club overall. The Volkswagen backed side had won the title back in 2008/09 but finished last season in 15th spot in the Bundesliga, during which time Steve McClaren was fired and star striker Edin Dzeko was sold to Man City.
Liverpool are keen to bring in more creative talent and are said to be closing in on Blackpool talisman Charlie Adam and having already signed Sunderland youngster Jordan Henderson, Kenny Dalglish is expected to bring in further signings to help push his side back into the top four next term.
Diego had been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool during Rafa Benitez’s spell at the club and the much traveled midfielder may be looking for a fresh start after stuttering seasons with Juventus and Wolfsburg.

Meireles' fitness (inability to run out a game) is his downfall.
He was KD's most subbed player. Very good for the first hour but he lacks the stamina.

13.5 million pounds for a player who helped Liverpool through a damn tough time last year, I would take him in a heartbeat. It does show how the transfer market is changing with Henderson going to Liverpool for 20 mil but Miereles only worth 13.5 WTF indeed.

Henderson went for 16m and will likely hold his value or go up.Outlaw 2.0 wrote:13.5 million pounds for a player who helped Liverpool through a damn tough time last year, I would take him in a heartbeat. Merieles' value in the transfer market has already started to drop, he'll be turning 29 next year.
Both transfers appeased (will appease) the bean counters aswell as the manager.
