Brighton City

Someone asked me about Brighton City the other day, and I was trying to trace their history...

I think they started in SAASL in 1971, and left about 1978 to join the federation when they amalgamated with federation club Mitcham.

I have heard that they left SASF about 1988 and came back to SAASL... but I can't find any records of this.

Anyone know anything about them? Swanny, perhaps....??

Brighton City were a former sasf team that played their last game at the end of the 1987 season. I played my 3rd and last game for Modbury first team in this fixture, Modbury were promoted to div 1(johnny Kaye scored the winner)........amateurs ever since

Remember going to Elizabeth Downs Seniors games in 1971 at Brighton (Division 3 ), my older brother Dave Swann was the original keeper for the Downs.
Think I played one of my first senior level games ( 1974 in the Reserves ) as a 16 year old, down at Brighton's ground.....

Only memory I have is playing against them for Windsor Melita Juniors...now Enfield City in the in the late 80's early 90's. Their pitch was a shocker, wern't around for very long, think they may have folded as their pitch was taken over by a hockey club.

Interesting.... seems like Brighton City folded up at the end of '87, then, and didn't return to SAASL.

I played against them for Uni in '72, and remember scoring with a rare left footed shot, but we still lost 2-1.

I saw them play a friendly against Mitcham in '76- the club they eventually amalgamated with. Interesting that a SAASL club merged with a federation club, but it was the SAASL club name that was retained, and the federation club's name dropped... you'd think it would be the other way around.

Brighton City hovered around Division 3-4-5 between 1971-1987
Brighton City finished 3rd in SAASL Sunday Division 5 in 1987 and their Reserves finished top....in 1988 they seem to have been replaced by Western United who appeared from nowhere with several of the same players...
There was also a team called Brighton Rovers in Division 3 and a Brighton City in Division 4 in 1977....in 1975 Brighton City were relegated from Division 3 whilst , Brighton Rovers were promoted from Division 4....
Brighton Rovers seem to have emerged in 1975.

I remember playing them around 81 or 82.... The only player I recall from them was Larry Sullivan....

1972 I was playing for Elizabeth Downs U/14s so highly unlikely....my brother Dave was in the A's...most likely it was Harry Frenken !

That's they way i can remember it.....absolute shocker of a pitch.....but "thems the good old days".....no excuses, just get on with it The old Adey reserve was only just a step above it......seen a few passes go astray on that pitch also.

Yeah, Brighton City - they beat the team I was then coaching (NAB) in an early round of the 1986 Cup down @ Brighton. I was nearly sacked on the spot. Somehow I survived and NAB went on to finish first in our division - but I then got sacked anyway, replaced by the NAB Secretary's brother... Memories. Gawd, that was a quarter of a century ago!

Is Brighton's ground now being used by a rugby union club?

Adey Reserve . Playing there as junior, under 13's i think, for Salisbury against, back then, Azzuri... Rounded the keeper with nothing but net to hit. Rolled the ball towards the net, ran off celebrating towards my bench only to see the coach and manager screaming at me to turn around. Didn't hit the ball hard enough and it stopped in a puddle of mud about 1 ft from the goal. Keeper just stood up, walked back and picked it up . My old man also played there as Keeper when he was younger and says similar thing happened to him, only for him to run back to the ball jump in the puddle and miss the ball only which in turn made a bit of a wave which pushed the ball over the line .

They had a very strong Under 18 side in the early 70's in the SAASL ,were very dominant, difficult ground to play on.

Would be interesting to see their home game record, for their Senior teams as well. Having said that,the conditions are the same for both teams, they just new how to play on it better the rest.

Whilst their SAASL team never got higher than 3rd, 4th or 5th divs in SAASl, their first team was playing in federation 2nd div, 1980-87. In 1981 they finished fourth, ahead of the likes of Enfield Victoria, Modbury and USC Lion... and only just behind Adelaide City and West Adelaide reserves!
