Bluebirds avoid Terriers upset
Cardiff City ( 5 ) Huddersfield Town ( 3 )
Craig Conway inspired Cardiff to a 5-3 extra-time victory over Huddersfield in a Carling Cup thriller.
The Scotland international scored the first goal of extra time before Don Cowie, who had headed a late equaliser from a Conway cross to send the match into an extra period, sealed victory.
Conway had set the tone for a high-scoring contest when he was provider for Cardiff's opening two goals, scored in as many first-half minutes by Gabor Gyepes and Jon Parkin, to give them a 2-0 interval lead.
Huddersfield hit back through Jordan Rhodes and Daniel Ward before the former appeared to have settled the tie with two minutes to play.
But Cowie struck four minutes into injury time to force the extra half-hour - six minutes into which Conway drove at the Terriers' defence and unleashed a 25-yard effort that beat visiting goalkeeper Ian Bennett with the aid of a deflection.
Cowie made sure sure of the win in the 117th minute by thrashing home after Bennett and Gary Naysmith had thwarted efforts from substitute Kenny Miller.
Bluebirds boss Malky MacKay rung the changes for Cardiff, with only Cowie and Conway remaining from the side that drew with Burnley, while Ward replaced Gary Roberts in the only change to Huddersfield's weekend line-up.
The home side led in the 16th minute when some slack Huddersfield marking allowed Gyepes to head home from Conway's right-wing free-kick.
Parkin drew the foul from Peter Clarke that made the opener possible and he doubled Cardiff's advantage moments later.
Conway was the provider once more, this time from the left flank, as Parkin planted a header beyond Bennett via the upright.
Huddersfield's woes were compounded when Lee Novak limped off to be replaced by Alan Lee in the 26th minute. But they went about turning the contest on its head eight minutes after the break.
Rhodes charged down a clearance from Bluebirds defender Paul Quinn, collected the loose ball and finished from an acute angle.
Huddersfield levelled when Ward drove into the bottom corner from the edge of the area after efforts from himself and Oscar Gobern were blocked.
And Rhodes thought he had completed a remarkable comeback for Town as Gobern sent him clear and he slotted past Heaton.
But in the final minute of stoppage time Cowie became the third Cardiff player to head home from a Conway cross.
The former Dundee United winger then got the goal his display merited and before Miller struck the woodwork and Cowie added close to the scoreline.

DERBY DRAW DELIGHTS DICKOV
Oldham vs Huddersfield 1 - 1
Date: 03/09/2011
Venue: Boundary Park
Attendance: 6 213 (2395 visitors)
Referee: C Webster
Paul Dickov was a happy man as 10-man Latics held high-flying Huddersfield Town to a 1-1 draw at Boundary Park in npower League One.
The Latics manager was given a positive reaction following last Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Colchester against a Terriers side which extended its unbeaten league run to a remarkable 31 matches, a sequence now stretching into a ninth month.
The fact Latics played the latter stages with 10 men following Bradley Diallo's sending off on his full debut also reinforced it was a terrific point gained.
Dickov, who thought his side had the better chances, said: "I am delighted with a draw as we were playing one of the best, if not the best team in the division and matching them for 94 minutes, even when we went down to 10 men.
"I asked the players beforehand to go out and give me everything they had, and I don't think anybody can question that."
The Latics manager was also delighted with the debut displays of Shefki Kuqi, who scored after less than six minutes and Tom Adeyemi while Diallo made his first start.
The only disapppointment, Dickov added, was Town's equaliser which came from a set piece, something he says they work on tirelessly in training adding that at times his players probably showed Town too much respect as they are such a good team.
He also pointed out he does not believe there will be many teams who cause Town as many problems as his team did.
It was all change as Latics had four new faces in their starting line up from last week, three of which were enforced.
Paul Black was injured, Huddersfield would not permit Nathan Clarke to play, Carl Winchester was on international duty while David Mellor dropped down to the bench.
Diallo came in at left back, Jean-Yves M'voto to the centre of defence, Adeyemi in the centre of midfield and Kuqi up front.
Any new player yearns for a dream debut and Kuqi certainly got that finding the net inside six minutes.
Diallo delivered a perfect cross from the left and Kuqi powered home a header from inside the six-yard box which was followed by his trade mark bellyflop celebration.
Town equalised in the 16th minute when central-defender Anthony Kay foound the net with a cracking volley from a Gary Roberts corner which flew in off the upright.
Roberts had a chance after half an hour to give Town the lead but fired over at the far post from inside the six-yard box.
Then just before half time both keepers were called into action, Ian Bennett to beat away a 35-yard drive from Filipe Morais and Alex Cisak to deny Danny Ward.
There was a lively start to the second half as Reuben Reid had an effort beaten away by Bennett while Morais saw a shot deflected for a corner.
Town also had their moments as Roberts forced Cisak into action and Tommy Miller looked set to score until Zander Diamond made a last-gasp tackle.
The match, which had been played in a good spirit, became fiery when James Wesolowski and Lewis Gobern were booked in quick succession midway through the half.
Diallo was then sent off following a late challenge on Gobern which ended his game. His replacement Alan Lee's first touch was an angled shot which crashed against the crossbar.
The sending off forced off Morais as Mellor was needed to play at left back.
Late in the game Matty Lund and Matt Smith replaced Reuben Reid and Shefki Kuqi as Latics shut up shop playing 4-4-1 which worked a treat as Town never seriously looked like paying their extra man count on an afternoon Latics had plenty to be cheerful about.
