Who'd want to be a referee these days. We play amateurs...it is at the bottom of the ladder with A League being at the top in Australia. Referees in amateurs don't earn big money. Be happy we have them or eventually it will be all club refs.
If the marshall abused the ref he had every right to call off the game whether someone "verbally" threatened him or not. A person doesn't have to say "I'll bash you" for you to feel like they are going to bash you.
At my club our supporters get very vocal and obscenities are often shouted at the ref in the heat of the game but there is a line you do not cross and when our own supporters do cross that line we tell them to pull there head in and one trouble maker was given a ban this year.
I can assure you if a ref came over to our marshall he would of listened to the ref and dealt with the trouble maker

Bit of a catch 22, no one wants to referee because of the obuse being thrown around so you end up with lower numbers of referees and more abuse......used to get many of the over 35's players becoming referees...these days they can just keep playing.
The club official/president/chairman didn't abuse the referee. He told him the match was being played in a public park, the supporter was behind the line and he didn't know who he was.
The quote in the messenger is completely off. Who talks like that anyway? The quote should have read "no wonder referees get bashed". It was clearly said out of frustration at what was a poor decision and while it could be seen as threatening, there was no threat.
Some people who weren't at the match are the first ones to jump online and put their two cents in. Supporters will always feel they get the bad end of refereeing decisions (and in this case I feel there was an injustice). But at the same time referees should know they don't have any friends once they get out on the pitch. It is a terrible job to have and I'd never want to do it but I've seen and heard a million times worse than what I witnessed on Sunday and the ref dealt with it poorly. I am not saying it is his fault, because who are we to say what he felt, but if he is going to continue to referee A-grade men's matches he needs to realise abuse is a part of a referee's life and he needs to take a cement pill.
loukaniko wrote:The club official/president/chairman didn't abuse the referee. He told him the match was being played in a public park, the supporter was behind the line and he didn't know who he was.
Sensible comments loukaniko. I guess that's always the problem with a lot of amateur games, how do you control who comes to watch? Can't have SAPOL at every game and everyone has to exercise a reasonable amount of self-control.
The other point of view of course, would be that it's a convenient cop-out for club officials who don't want to discipline their own supporters.
I don't know which applies in this case, but I do know that it's getting harder and harder to find officials and, as he pool decreases, so does the general standard. As someone else said, no refs, no game, no clubs. Since 95% of supporters have already had their playing days, I think it's only fair to let the current generation have their fun and for us old boys not to fuck it up for them.

Yes ingle farm player did bring the pontian player down and I have seen these given as a red card. Perhaps it should have been given but it wasn't. You win some, you loose some but over a season things generally even themselves out between the good and bad calls. Pontian keeper had a clear and deliberate handball outside the box and was duly given a red card. Once again seen them given plenty of times before but farm player would have had a bit of work left to finish off the goal, bad decision by the keeper. Was not privvy to the exact comments of the said supporter to the ref. Sick of hearing what if he was a neutral. He was not a neutral and clearly part of the pontian continget there on the day. The pontian marshal who is the club president did not handle the situation well. Instead he aggrovated the situation by dishing a tirade of abuse to the ref. Steve is genuinely a good guy but can be incosistent either way you have to respect the referees decision, harden up and get on with it. The young linesman on the pontian side was visibly shaken by the incident and given the incidents that have occurred this year the president/marshal should have taken a common sense approach and diffused the situation. League needs to set a precedent here and apparently pontians already on a good behaviour issue from the league due to previous incedents. The loosers out of the whole thing is players and spectators who gave up there time for what should have been a cracking game.

The yellow jacket official should hang his head in shame also.

Pontain supporters abuse Ref, Ref asks the yellow coated official to move a abusive / aledgedly threatening supporter away, instead goes mental and abuses ref even more, ref cancels game, and states he doesnt need or have to put up with threat of being 'bashed', felt sorry for the players who were battling out a good close game for second spot and Farm who had absolutely no involvement in the situation.
Whole thing could have been diffused if the yellow coated official showed some respect and kept his mouth shut and asked the supporter to move away from the line instead of further provoking the siuation.
4-4-2 wrote:As for Ingle Farm they will say things to favour themselves as they want the points
Ghia, we are stating what happened. You post this crap just when you started to show a logical view point on the situation. Pontian have so far stated that a neutral abused the ref. To their credit they now admit he is not a neutral. You stated that no one threatened the ref. Yet in a recent post admitted that a b team player may have threatened the ref after the game was called off and will be punished accordingly by being left out of the team (congratulations on taking action against this behaviour). If anyone has said anything to favor themselves it would be pontians. After all if the league in their infinite wisdom determine the game is to be replayed (absolute joke if they do) then everything pontian said to the ref is in pontians favor given you were down to 10 men with 70 mins to play

My point is that most, if not all, of the authors of the posts you've quoted in your lengthy research were not actually EYEWITNESSES. They were either not there, or were not close enough to see or hear what exactly went on. I have sat and read through pages and pages of dribble from people like yourself who have no place to pass judgement on affairs you have no involvement with. I thought it was finally time to weigh in, if only to prevent further damage to the character of both the club and the official in question. I would also like to add the Gardens v Pontian B grade game earlier this season was called off by the referee because of abuse from the crowd and I can assure you it was not from the Pontian crowd on that occasion.
Returning to Sunday's match, the ref said "tell the guy (yelling stuff out) to shut up."
Official: "I've tried Steve. I don't know the guy. He's behind the line, what do you want me to do? go over to a guy in a public park and tell him to piss off?"

Yes that's what we need to do just Move on, until the next time a referee sends a player off & then cops abuse from Supporters & Club Officials.
This is something that needs to be seriously addressed by both the League our Clubs & Players to try not let this happen again.
Referees like Clubs & Players make mistakes & have bad games, but when People & Clubs justify the abuse & threats of the Referee because of a poor decission the Referee has made we have a serious problem.
If the League just makes a decission on this situation & we all just move on from this, it is only going to happen again.
I think handy_mans post shows the problems that not only the Referees face, but our sport faces.

Pontian caused and inflamed the issue
you need to see the consequences for your clubs actions as they are having a major effect on the amateur game, deflecting the blame is only making it worse.
refs need to be protected from morons like the few last sunday and Pontian need to support the league by standing hard and sacking their president and doing all they can to ensure it doesnt happen again, all i see is the club or patrons of the club continually deflecting the blame and therefore taking zero responsibility for what happened.

Actually everyone that was quoted in nuggets post was there on Sunday. Let's be honest here, your president/marshal could be heard from accross the park. Now I am sure this president is a very hard working member of the club. He needs to keep his emotions in check or else appoint someone else to marshal the game.
Pontian have a history and should be thrown out of the league! A few years ago my club experienced them rioting when two players clashed their whole contigent (at least 30 maybe more) ran in to 'kill' our player, (who by the way didn't swing first). The brother of the player being attacked went over to pull Pontian players and supporters away and I watched from the far side of the pitch (as linesman) as one brave soul ran up behind him and broke his jaw. Needless to say the game was abandoned. The incredible part in all this is that Pontian went straight down the SAASL on the Monday and told their story which was a total fabrication.... first in best dressed... just like their rioting policy. My message is... beware of Pontian they are a cunning club.... and it stems from the top!
This is all getting a bit out hand. The the league do there job and sort it out. Slagging people off who weren't there is a bit harsh. Pontoon haven't had the best history but this season have improved out of sight to improve things. By far they were the best hosts when we played away there. I think people need to be careful about casting stones as most clubs have an incident that they would rather forget.
Still waiting on hearing the outcome though. There was a hearing last night but it seems like no decision on the result or punishment, if any, has been made yet. Would be nice to know before the weeknend's game for both teams benefit.

Well said Jay
From what we were told last night the yellow coat Marshall has been banned from doing that job indefinatly and cannot make any contact with referees. The club has banned the ressies player that made the stupid comment last week from this weeks game. The club is embarassed by what happened will accept the final decision the Saasl makes and we move on and look forward to finals and next year
Seems as though some people mostly those not involved with farm and quick to lay the boot in I know some established clubs that have a longer history than Pontians in the league have "a code of silence" where some incidents that do occur on a pitch don't get spoken about on forums like this I suppose it's like not airing the dirty laundry. The Pontians have taken steps to improve as club and will try to prove this years success isn't a once off and the club can challenge every year for the title

I spoke with the official linesman and his comment was that the ref asked several times if the person on the side
could please reframe from shouting abuse, he asked the captain and the marshall and both didnt talk to the
neutral supporter (who was wearing a pontian track suit) it was then that the ref called the game off.

Mate I got no idea who Loukaniko, Pontian, Pontian Fan, Best of whats left and most other forum members are. I call it as I see it and they are allowed to type what they like its not up to me to discuss with them what they type or not to type.
Result has been given to Farm 2-0 and they will stay second. Congrats to them. The league has made the call and we get on with it.
As with all walks of life everyone sees the game differently and I hope all marshalls when told to do something can handle it and get the job or request done so the players dont miss out on playing a game or worse still, an abondoned game costing them a season.

I managed to get to a few sunday premier games this year, saw pontians thrice (and once more in the cup v saints). Apart from the farm game (not gonna make any excuses here - their president was stupid, I'm sure he knows it), I got the impression they were on the whole a decent club.
Every club has idiots, every club has people that take things too far. Your personal crusade on this forum to show up how 'bad' or 'unsporting' they are is pretty pathetic.
PS. We get it - P.G. won the league, you are the greatest. This does not give you a halo to post and rant about whatever bullshit you want, whilst pretending Gardens are some saintly organisation.

This does not give you a halo to post and rant about whatever Barossa Pearl you want, whilst pretending Gardens are some saintly organisation.

Splits him open a ripper!!! Players from both sides run in and during this the Downs Player in question, not from behind as pointed out by some clueless people, but to his face give him one back. Should have been done and dusted then with both players being sent off. But no, the Pontian Captain, Big Centre back, #3?, charges in and starts to go again, then with both sets of 11 men right there and tempers raging, an all in brawl breaks out... Once again could have this could have been resolved and play may have stated again but some silly Pontian Fans jump the fence, run across the park to join in. This is when the Ref blows full time...
In regards as to why a Pontian Player, and i say only one player, not the team, decided to lash out, who the shiraz knows as they were 3v1 up. The All in, in my mind, wasn't sparked by the elbow more so due to people afterwards not controlling themselves.
In regards to the Pontian spectators running on... Absolute Disgrace, and to hear comments like, "he is my son" and "im a white coat" were histerical. Excuse me, we are plyaing Mens Football here, its not Under 6's and you need your daddy's help. And if you are a whitecoat/official, 1-Where is your coat and or badge so people know who you are and secondly if you are who you say you are, why were you in there throwing punches and rolling around on the floor with the opposition players???? Yeah real Official.
...
Last years Downs v Pontian game abandoned when Pontian Supporters Including the Club Marshall ran onto the pitch,
Pontian got a Good Behaviour Bond out of it & then this???

Nugget you really are a clown. Two very seperate incidents, in regards to the first one that particular player who got king hit from behind is no longer at the club as are a few others who played that game. As for the second one again you wernt there, in fact you wernt there for either of them and you are making comments on what you read on here!!! that says enough doesnt it. Pontians have accepted the punishement and we move on.
