Re: Ref cancels match after bash threats
Now im not trying to stir up the sat vs sunday debate, but when was the last time a premier, or div 2 sat game called off due to violence or threats to the ref. Just seems the besa thing, maiwand thing, and now pontian(whether it was a threat or just abuse) is all involving sunday teams. I actually dont know thus why im asking, is this happening just on sundays or what? Apart from playing against modbury jets, ive felt its a much different atmosphere in the crowd on a sat compared to sundays. But thats just my opinion.

Re: Ref cancels match after bash threats
Blaming the ref for all this for making a decision which I thought was the correct one is ridiculous, he made an error earlier in the game but a goal was scored and the pontain side of the pitch was happy.
The alledged "neutral" was standing near the half way line in the middle of the Pontian supporters, very odd place to stand for neutral with no affiliation to Pontian ???
Steve said to me personally he called it off because he received a threat of being bashed.
The already stated yellow coat / president inflamed the situation and was the bloke going off the most and swearing at the the ref, as Nuggett said any other president would have tried to calm the situation and at least go an speak to "alledged neutral" but this guy was in my opinion the one who caused this most was the president. Had the Pontian president assured Steve it was being clamed down and the "alledged neutral" was being asked to move on or kept under control Steve probably would have allowed the game to continue.
I feel sorrry for the Pontian players and supporters, but the president must be made accountable for what is now in the media for the whole of Australia to see, only a week after the Maiwand situation,
No refs = No game = No league !!!!
Farm should be awarded the points, and maybe even financially compensated for lost BBQ and Bar Sales it surely would have made over the remianing 70 minutes, plus half time and post game.

Re: Ref cancels match after bash threats
Fuck me dead. So the ref asked a Pontion official to calm the spectator down, the Pontion official instead abused the ref
"• Wear the Identifying Vest and officials ID as provided by the SAASL
• Respect the decisions of the match official and encourage others to do the same"
He didnt, ref made the call to stop game. End of story. 25 fucking pages of excuses later the fact remains the official didnt do his job. Bad ref or not, its a breach of rules. We all make mistakes, man up and take responsibility for them, dont try and shift the blame

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into crowd behaviour at a soccer match involving Ferryden Park club Pontian, following allegations a spectator threatened to “bash” the referee.
The referee called off the away game at Ingle Farm midway through the second half on Sunday, August 28, after allegedly receiving abuse from sections of Pontian supporters.
The incident followed the referee’s decision to send off Pontian’s goalkeeper for handling the ball outside the box.
One eyewitness told the Weekly Times Messenger a Pontian fan shouted to the referee: “Decisions like that get refs bashed and you’ll get yours at the end of the game.”
The incident - the second involving threats or violence towards referees at SA Amateur Soccer League matches this season - is being investigated by the league.
SA Amateur Soccer Referee Association president Andrew Leetham declined to comment on the specifics of the latest incident.
However, he was concerned by the risks to referees and called on the league to review umpire safety.
“It’s a concern that there have been more of these incidents happening than there have been in recent years, and I think we need to sit down with the amateur league, and the clubs, and identify what we need to do to ensure umpire safety,” Mr Leetham said.
“The referee involved was an experienced referee and wouldn’t have taken the action he did if he didn’t feel it was warranted.
“As a general rule, none of our members are expected to be placed in a position where they feel at risk.”
Pontian coach George Kargiotis declined to comment.
Ingle Farm coach Paul Simpson said his club’s spectators were not involved in the incident and he supported the referee’s decision to abandon the match, with scores tied at 1-1.

Adelaide Villa V Wanderers last year was called off, after a clearing of benches brawl!!!
BOTH teams didnt get any points though, didnt matter as AV won the league!
Re: Ref cancels match after bash threats
not saying that mate just trying to get the point across that I feel the better refs tend to be more consistant with their decisions to both sides. This adds to a better game and all involved are lot happier. Steve is the only ref to come to the sidelines on three different occasions this year to talk to our supporters threatening to get people removed. He should just shut up and let the game play out. Some of the refs we have had this year have been great, they tend to concentrate on the game [/quote]PONTIAN wrote:I suspected it was all the referees fault.
Pontian can you answer me these question..??
why have you had Steve 3 times this year (or is it more)..??
Why has he come to the sidelines on 3 occasions..??
Why did your official inflame the situation..?
And if you were on the pitch why didnt you tell the supporters to pull their heads in...??

Re: Ref cancels match after bash threats
I was Chairman of the Gardens for 6 year, most of the games in that time I was Ground Marshall.
I found the hardest part of being a Ground Marshall was having to tell good friends to calm down & pull there heads in.
In some instances when they went over the top & didn't listen to those instructions I was force to impose bans to them.
After every home game I made it a point to go to the Referee thank him & offer him a drink regardless whether we Won or the Job that he did,
something I am proud still continues at our Club today through lefty.
When I finished my role as Chairman, I went back to being a Passionate Vocal Gardens Supporter.
I am no angel & I have given Referee's plenty of curry before, like after last years Cup Final on this forum as you can see in handy_mans signature (knob).
I can honestly say this I have Never threatened a Referee or got is his Face, Never had a Referee Stop the game & tell the Ground Marshall to Shut me Up,
I have always know the line not to cross...
I know how important Referee's are to our game & RESPECT the Job that they do, even the poor ones.
I hate how people blame Referee's, bad tackles, oppersition players & supporters, for "there actions" trying to justify absolutley terrible behaviour that just can't be.
The Facts are this...
On Sunday at Ingle Farm the Referee sent the Pontian Keeper Off,
a Pontian Supporter started abusing the Referee to the point he Stop the Game to speak to the Pontian Ground Marshall,
the Pontian Ground Marshall then joined in the abuse of the Referee.
It is reported that One eyewitness told the Messenger a Pontian fan shouted to the referee:
“Decisions like that get refs bashed and you’ll get yours at the end of the game.”
The Referee obviously felt that he had no other alternative than to Abandoned the game & it is reported that he had the support of the oppersition coach.
A Farms Players take on it,
still blame the Referee for his poor performance on the day & for the game being abandoned..
It makes me so angry that people just don't get the fact that our Association has rules that we need to abide by other wise we'll have more incidence like the
BESA & MAIWAND.
The SAASL needs to make a stand over this incident, the Club, Ground Marshall & Chairman need to be serverly disaplined over this.
Clubs, Officials, Player & Supporters need to know this will not be tolarated, not one bit & there are concequences to your actions.

Yes ingle farm player did bring the pontian player down and I have seen these given as a red card. Perhaps it should have been given but it wasn't. You win some, you loose some but over a season things generally even themselves out between the good and bad calls. Pontian keeper had a clear and deliberate handball outside the box and was duly given a red card. Once again seen them given plenty of times before but farm player would have had a bit of work left to finish off the goal, bad decision by the keeper. Was not privvy to the exact comments of the said supporter to the ref. Sick of hearing what if he was a neutral. He was not a neutral and clearly part of the pontian continget there on the day. The pontian marshal who is the club president did not handle the situation well. Instead he aggrovated the situation by dishing a tirade of abuse to the ref. Steve is genuinely a good guy but can be incosistent either way you have to respect the referees decision, harden up and get on with it. The young linesman on the pontian side was visibly shaken by the incident and given the incidents that have occurred this year the president/marshal should have taken a common sense approach and diffused the situation. League needs to set a precedent here and apparently pontians already on a good behaviour issue from the league due to previous incedents. The loosers out of the whole thing is players and spectators who gave up there time for what should have been a cracking game.

Whole thing could have been diffused if the yellow coated official showed some respect and kept his mouth shut and asked the supporter to move away from the line instead of further provoking the siuation.

It is alledged by the Referee & another eyewiteness that he was physically threatened.
I know 99% of the Pontian formitees & other has tried to justify there behaviour because of the Referee's poor performance on the day.
That I find to be a absolute discrace especially from a Sunday Premier League Club....
And I hope that your Club is severely punished for that....
