Cost for juniors

I was speaking to someone on Saturday, and they said to send their son (15/16 years old) to play at West Adelaide it cost over $600 per year. He said that included in that was a kit, and a tracksuit.

Is this true? How is it comparable to other FFSA/SAASL clubs?

Adelaide City is about $800-$1100 and yes that usually involves complete kits, bag and all.

Some clubs are 450$ - 600$ but you will find the cheaper it is the less you get, but you wont find many FFSA clubs below $500 after about U10.

Some just force complete club kits and others do not. So basically all clubs are the same they just have different guidelines. Adelaide City is only more expensive because they want all players to look professional and all players will have the entire club set up, others do not and are happy to have a club jacket.

Of the players who get paid at these clubs, how many have a realistic chance of hitting the big time?

I'm all for high-level competitive play in the state, but having juniors pay this much is absurd, considering a large portion of it would be used to pay the seniors wages.

Divide $600 up with the amount of hours training the player gets through the year ........

So Adl City charge an extra $200-$500 for a tracksuit bottom and a bag ?

Do their u9-u11 still only train once a week ?

These kits would cost clubs around $100-150. The rest goes into running costs, lights, ground maintenance, coaches fees, rego costs etc.
The clubs like City that charge extra, pay their coaches more.
It's not cheap running a club though, put up your hand one day and volunteer to be in a committee and you will see.
Add onto this parents time, petrol costs, boots, extra training outside of club(because club training is usually ordinary), extra strip, extra ball/balls, cones for personal training, GEL for the hair etc etc. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
It can cost anywhere up to $2K per year or even more if you did an Andre Meyers/Agostino academy

From 2012, AC U9's will train twice a week. U10's & U11's already doing that.

Then go play amatuers or E&D, they will only charge you $150-$200, then $5 a game for 18 plus rounds which is apx $100, then you buy a club shirt$30 or jacket$60, then you have to buy shorts$20 and socks$15 and guess what, theres apx $450.

If it's about money, you have a choice of clubs with different pricing structures!

Also, every kid has a realistic chance to "make it" and once they do, would you complain if they were getting $500 a game if it was your son

Like someone said on here already, if you break it down it's only a few bucks per session and clubs cant survice on just pure charity

why would you go play at adelaide city juniors and pay $800 - $1100 approx a year when they cant even provide enough car parking spaces for all parents on training nights and game day, parking is restricted due to bike lane on week nights, how many parents have recieved parking fines,....do the fees cover for that?

plenty of other better clubs out there in the suburbs who actually provide car-parking, decent food and coffee, and spacious clubrooms that dont look like a makeshift campsite.

and the so called "good coaches" have no problem this time of year in demoralizing their own players by bringing down players into lower age groups, even though they are eligable, but are playing in an older age group, while other players who have played all year step aside and watch from the bench so that these good coaches..?..and parents can all celebrate another championship.

I agree, Adelaide City Juniors dont even get to play on the main pitch. They play on those field of pitches. At least most of the other top teams let their juniors play on their main pitches.

It ain't the cheapest pursuit for kids, but it ain't the most expensive. From what I hear Footy is must cheaper, but until we have the same profile, sponsorship and TV rights it's likley to remain that way.

This subject crops up every six months on here, and no one comes up with anything new or a different angle.

Some claim the clubs fund their seniors through their juniors, while the clubs claim it's not so. The truth, as with most things is probably somewhere in between. I doubt that anyone's money goes directly on senior wages, but juniors at some clubs probably pay more than their fair share of the rent, rates, electricity etc, but there again the juniors use the facilities a lot more.

Adelaide City charge more because they can. Parents want their kids to go to what is perceived to be the most successful junior club (read that again pedants, I said 'is perceived to be' not 'is') - it's called market forces and unless communism is your bag and you demand that all clubs charge the same, then learn to live with it.

If people feel they can't afford the fees, then I suggest they cancel their Foxtel subscriptions.

Maybe this year at trials some parents will look at the smaller clubs with cheaper fees that are possibly going into the top leagues, rather than paying top dollar to play JSL.

However that is based on the players/parents goals and drive within the game I speak to some and they say nah that club is not in the A league, yet they play for a club that is, but only play the JSL.

For $300 we had a pack that included socks, shorts, polo, bag, and either a hoody or a windbreaker. We don't pay any players, and we look like we will be turning a profit this year. (We have numerous club strips, people don't get individual ones due to kit clashes)

To be fair, we don't have any junior set-up, so we don't have to pay for a coach and extra ground hire, but you can't tell me that any more than $400 (and that's being generous) per player wouldn't cover all the costs of juniors.

I just find it pretty poor that clubs, in the pursuit of success, charge juniors (their parents) such large sums of cash in subsidize paying senior players.

This depends on the quality of the clothing, tops etc made in Bali are one thing, top quality range is another.

Let's also remember that the Federation league although is about fun is fundamentally suppose to be the best there is in SA, while also being the only path to higher prof football in SA.

Go find out the % of players from SA who made it into top leagues, NSL or A league and ask how many were picked up from SAASL and FFSA, the two bodies have total different direction.

My brother coaches within the FFSA Junior system, he has been at two different clubs in 4 years, he was and is paid by them all. Not weekly salaries but some sort of payment agreement was made, that I know for sure.

Following that classic piece of logic, if OISC don't pay their players, then why don't they field any junior teams - obviously they would be able to offer much more affordable fees?

Also if you'd done your research on previous threads similar to this one, you would find a post by the Chairman of a large club where he states that they keep their junior and senior finances quite separate. Now I'm not saying he was speaking for all clubs, but I do know that strangely enough, his club's junior fees are no cheaper than any other club.

Ask your council how much it is to rent/lease the grounds for 6 days of the week, plus all the extras for 6 nights ??
