You are the ref!
Attacker has a shot and the defender on the line catches the ball, stopping a certain goal. However, before you can blow the whistle, he drops the ball and it rolls over the goal line and into the net.
As the ref: What do you do?

Re: You are the ref!
is it a red card and a penalty because the ball stopped when they caught it?

As a referee you give the as the goal is scored and caution the play for is guilty of unsporting behaviour.

Penalty and Red Card
We had this same situation the other week one of our guys stopped a certain goal on the goal line with his hand ball dropped and rolled in. Ref had blown the whistle quickly and awarded a penalty (which we saved ) Our player was straight red carded and sent off.

Re: You are the ref!
Surely the game could not have played on to advantage because it is a red card offense and as a result the game stops at the incident (in this case being the handball) not when the whistle is blown. As a result of that no goal can be awarded regardless of when the whistle is blown. The Referee would have to award a penalty for deliberate handball and a red card the player for the same reason.
however I'm going to agree with Randoman purely to get a Well Done. . . .

Re: You are the ref!
OK! This is the answer.
Because the ball has crossed the line before you have blown for the handball, you have effectively played advantage. Would you consider it fair to pull back a goal, in order to give the attacking team a chance of a goal. NO, of course not. So you allow the goal.
Now for the punishment, is it a red or a yellow. The punishment for a deliberate handball is a yellow card unless you have Denied an Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity, well he hasn't denied that goal scoring opportunity because the ball is in the net and you've given the goal. So, it's only a yellow.

The most amazing thing about all this is that GIAE reads the Guardian. Who would have thought it.
Unless You are the Ref! is syndicated in the Sun too?

Denying a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity
There are two sending-off offences that deal with denying an opponent an
obvious opportunity to score a goal. It is not necessary for the offence to occur
inside the penalty area.
If the referee applies advantage during an obvious goalscoring opportunity and
a goal is scored directly, despite the opponent’s handling the ball or fouling an
opponent, the player cannot be sent off but he may still be cautioned.
Referees should consider the following circumstances when deciding whether
to send off a player for denying a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity:
• the distance between the offence and the goal
• the likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball
• the direction of the play
• the location and number of defenders
• the offence which denies an opponent an obvious goalscoring opportunity
may be an offence that incurs a direct free kick or an indirect free kick

Re: You are the ref!
taking it a step further ie,,,the harry kewell red card in the world cup,,i believe the attacking team should have the option of the goal and the player not sent off,,,or having the penalty and the red car
Re: You are the ref!
Firstly I would like to qualify, I am in Launceston Tasmania & have already had 5 pints of James Boag XXX ALE (nice drop).God is an Englishman wrote:OK! This is the answer.

I would have to disagree and would challenge anyone that has agreed with you or given you an answer similar to this scenario.
If the ball hit the players hand and went in, then yes I agree with your statement.
But if the defender/player has caught the ball, then that is a completley different circumstance. In my opinion I would blow the whistle (I would imagine you where in the motion of doing so) and two things:
1) It would have to be a Penalty (the opportunity for the striker to actually score once again).
2) Player denied an obivious goal scoring opportunity. Couldn't care less that he throws the ball into the net, that is technically an own goal and if I was the striker that hit that ball, I would not be happy with that. As a referee you would have to give it a TOG, by the book.
Only my opinion. If the same player came into the box with a two footed, studs up challenge and nicked the striker.......and the ball still went into the net for a goal. Sorry I would send off that player, yes advantage (more so than in the case you state, in my opinion) but the intent was still there and yes goal would stand.
Have I had to many pints?
