David Beckham In Line For Knighthood

Post by PhilDunphy »

Prime Minister David Cameron and Prince William, who has been invited to be godfather to Becks’ new daughter, Harper Seven, are believed to be backing his case for a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours.

They were hugely impressed by his efforts to bring the Olympics to London as well as working tirelessly with them on England’s failed World Cup bid.

The Prime Minister said: “I pay tribute to David, who is an incredible role model in sport.”

Sir Trevor Brooking, the last top player to be knighted, also welcomed the possibility of Beckham becoming Sir David.

“I can’t think of anyone in sport more fitting to be awarded a knighthood than David Beckham,” he told The Sunday Express.

“He has been a fantastic ambassador for the sport both on and off the field, a true gentleman and role model.”

Becks, who met up again with Prince William when he visited LA recently, already has an OBE and has won much admiration for his patriotism and demeanour.

He looks set to be inundated with lucrative offers if he opts to come home when his contract with LA Galaxy expires in November.

Beckham is also being linked with a key role with the historic Great Britain team in next year’s Olympics.

I guess more England caps. However I don't like Beckham much, but he has been an important ambassador to the game in both England and internationally.

1977 (scored a pen), 1978, 1981, 1984 (scored in open play and in the penalty shootout) = 4 ECL winners for Phil Neal. He also played in 1985, in the final that shouldn't have been played.

He played 50 games for England, he did captain them on one occasion, and remember there were less friendlies those days too.

He also played over 350 consecutive games for LFC (Can't be arsed looking up the exact number).

Yids, what has he achieved as amabassador? He was only made captain as Sven forgot to make Sol captain in his first game in charge ( v Spain?) - a mistake he admitted!

Everyone goes on about Beckham for England and then come up with that one goal v Greece

He was a good player, never Utd's best, but due to excellent PR he and his wife became world stars. Neither has as much talent as many believe,

Giggs, Scholes, Cantona - all far better than Beckham. He struck a good dead ball, couldn't head, no pace, couldn't beat a man. He was limited but the limited things he could do he did exceptionally well.

Well he brought the image of England to all areas of the globe. The Asians and Yanks love him, no matter how average he is, and wherever he went he got big crowds. Plus his academies have given the opportunity for young talent to flourish.

Too be honest, knighthood should be going to thousands of soldiers before Beckham, people who actually made a difference.

The Empire did far more to get the English name across the world.

TBH a lot of the Amercians hate him, he is not popular in the MLS, (some of) his team mates wish he wasn't there - and the way he loans himself to Euro clubs.

Wow, how one eyed. If he was a Liverpool player, you would have named a stand after him by now.

Love him or hate him he is one of the most recognisable players in the worlds still. Played with passion and heart for England, played for some of the best teams in the world and won trophies. He brought the EPL to other countries more than anyone else.

Good luck to him if he gets Knighted. Certainly won't be the worst candidate ever.

Jay

We have 4 stands, The Kop, The Centenary, Main Satnd and Anfield Raod. I have never heard of any of those names being players. We have 2 (named) gates, Shankly and Paisley, they were recognised for their managemenet skills.

We have a Shankly Statue.

We are a team, players are part of that in all cases.

So the fact he played with passion and heart doesn't mean he played well all the time!!

What does this mean
He brought the EPL to other countries more than anyone else.
I know some LFC fans who rate him higher than me, but as El Capitano agreed, he wasn't as great as the media have made out

Since leaving UTD he won 1 La Liga, hardly a great achievement.

I don't agree with the whole naming a stand after players etc... Millwall have the Cold Blow Lane End, East and West Stand and that one over there were those away cunts sits.

As for Beckham, I agree with Yids on the soldiers comment but Beckham was a HUGE part of a bif that has redeveloped a whole area of London. east London was a complete and utter fucking infested shit hole, but after the olympics it will only be a fucking infested shit hole.

e-football, I do think you are being a bit precious.

Beckham was "The Man" of British football - he's the only British player of the last 30 years to have been regarded by the rest of the world as a World Class player.

There have been plenty of players that Brits have touted as World Class but Becks is the only one to have been a household name all over the world.

If he'd played for Liverpool you'd be raving about him all the time.

However, playing for ManUre makes him a hated figure to anyone who is a one-eyed supporter of another club.

He's also done more for the image of British football than any player since Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton.
The older I get the better I was.

One of them was a petty thief, the other a ticket tout. What great shoes to fill.

Didn't Keegan actually win the European Player of the Year? Lineker won a golden boot at a world cup.

OM, Beckham touted himself to LFC after leaving RM, and I didnt want him them, I didn't want him to come to LFC for the reasons I have staed. A lot of LFC fans did want him, and a lot didn't. Most importantly, the manager didn't!!!

As for only World Class player in the last 30 years? Gggs, Gascoigne, Heskey, Owen, Gerrard, there are mnay who have been better than him.

He and his wife have just marketed themselves superbly.

As much as I have always felt Beckham to be overrated and a bit soft, no knowledgable football fan can argue with this above, (apart from the 30 years comment).
Beckham, for all his faults/weaknesses has worked very hard throughout his whole career and on paper, his record speaks for itself. For every detractor, he has half a dozen advocates, and they will always make more noise than people trying to take him down a peg or two.
 And the achievements of others should never be used as an excuse for ANYBODY to not receive a knighthood, more so a case for them receiving one also.

What has he achieved that Giggs hasn't?

I am not sure who has slept with more women, but Giggs has done far more than Beckham on the pitch.

GIAE, Keegan won Euro footballer of the year twice in a row and also a second the year before that. (His second was at LFC, and winners when at Hamburg)

In 2001 (?) Owen won it. I cant remember Beckham ever winning it.

Then we come to World Player of the year, Beckham has got a second I think too.

Those seconds proves what he is, not quite ever as good as many believe.
