Reality is that England as the "home of football" has been a failure on the big stage, other than the 1966 victory on home soil. In comparison to other football powerhouses England's record on the big stage is poor.God is an Englishman wrote:When was the last time they failed to qualify?ozzie owl wrote:England didn't compete in those early WC's through arrogance, now they fail to qualify or fail when when they do qualify.
Is that why australia don't compete in afl world cups then, because they're arrogant?

England might not have taken the ultimate accolade but England's record is not actually that poor when you look deeper into it:
England have only lost (in normal play) 3 games in 22 years at world cups and even then 2 of them contained contentious refereeing decisions.

England also failed to qualify for the last Euros as well, their record in the finals in that tournment is poor as well.
Reality for the home of football England are underachievers.

No "Motherland". From Semi-final to non-event, Gazza must of been crying in 1990 cause he knew what was coming... the end of england making an impact on world stage. Can't even win Euro on home soil, or anywhere in europe for that matter.
I like most of the players they have, as a Liverpool supporter I even stood up for guys like Carra when national team turned its back. But leaving out a guy like Carra for so long, a guy who would have given heart and sole for the team, like a Pearce, Ince, Butcher, highlights the main problem they have... the managers who can't pick the right formula and pick based on media approval/demand.
Lampard and Gerrard would never work, taking out LFC bias, Gerrard has always been a better player, especially in the big games. Everyone knew it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq_cwwWcyqQ see from 4:40-5:17
NB: not only does crouchy look like he should be shiiitee at football, back to LFC bias, he is shiitee at football...
oh and as mentioned in video... Euro 2008... nuf said
Scholes is right on most points bout the players, they are too aware of the media hype about the premier league being "the best in the world", and their over inflated salaries, which makes them believe they are better than they play for england. But I repeat the point of the last few managers not having the minerals to set it straight and play what would work best for the team.
2008 and 2010, Spain leave Cesc on bench for majority of tournament, only injury to Torres 2010 opened a spot. Best team chemistry, results to show for it.
Smithy: And you know how we make a team work right?! (check Michael Carricks face... sums it up)
As much as I hate the Manc Scum, Fergie is probably the only manager right now who would command the respect of the players and be able to get away with whatever changes be necessary.
Cabage Man is no good.

Re: English players are just too selfish
carragher turned his back on the national team, not the other way round. Putting him on the same level as pearce, butcher, ince.. is an insult to those players.
So you have to go back, 16 years for us to have not made the world cup finals. MY POINT PROVEN THEN!!
lampard is better than gerrard. He scores more goals, he creates more goals! The only think gerrard beats lampard at is in getting red cards.

17 years ago, so a whole generation of players away.
As for the contentious refereeing decision meaning we won it. I agree, I mean without that goal it would have only been 3-2, and you don't win a world cup by only scoring one more goal than the opposition in the final do you.
HOLD ON! You do, don't you!

I don't think you can base a whole tournament on one contentious refereeing decision. At the end of the day such decisions are part and parcel of the game.God is an Englishman wrote:You won the World Cup on a contentious refereeing decision.

Carragher "retired" because he wasn't getting picked (Euro 2004). Surely you can't question his will to win and fighting spirit, just like the other 3. He had enough, not bundles, of quality, with bundles of heart, to have been a good player for England.
Lampard scores more goals cause he does less overall work on the pitch. you'd have to tackle to get a yellow/red card... hence lampards great discipline record (like lineker)
Bringing Euros in is not to back up arguement about missing '94, but to highlight the topic "English players too selfish..."
how is it that the England squad with so much "talent", miss out on 2008? Manager and player attitudes...
You asked when was the last time England failed to qualify? Numerous people answered. You got defensive about the time line. Why ask if you don't like the answer?
Plus with the current lack of centre half and center mid depth in england early 20something's, it could happen again sooner rather than later...

carragher wasn't first choice so had a hissy fit, said he didn't want to play for England and said he didn't care about England and you compare him to pearce and butcher et al
Lampard - well I expect an attacking midfielder to score and create goals. Lampard does that better than gerrard.
No defensiveness, just cold hard facts. You have to go back 17 years for the last time we didn't qualify.
As for euro's - ozzie owl had to bring in the euros to prove his point about England not qualifying for world cups.
