Record crowd tipped at Adelaide Oval

Post by the_gun »

ORGANISERS are confident the Socceroos match against New Zealand next month will pack Adelaide Oval.

More than 20,000 tickets have already been sold for the June 5 clash, which is expected to feature exciting South Australian midfielder James Troisi.

Socceroos coach Holger Osieck yesterday included Troisi in his 23-man squad for the friendlies against New Zealand and Serbia in Melbourne on June 7.

Troisi impressed Osieck before the Socceroos upset powerhouse Germany 2-1 on home turf in March.

"You may remember I had a camp for fringe Socceroos in Duisberg prior to the Germany game and James got an invitation. Looking back, he had a successful start to the season," Osieck said.

"He actually played in one of the test games we had (in camp) and I could see already he has got something.

"There's definitely some interesting players on the list, players I want to see who should be given the opportunity to show their potential if they are up to standard for the Socceroos."

Osieck hopes rain softens the Adelaide Oval wicket after watching the pace of the ball and the extra bounce when the Reds faced Melbourne Victory at the Oval in February during the cricket season.

"The pitch is, of course, an issue but the first thing is we have to control the ball," Osieck said.

"We have to control our game and good teams can play on any pitch."

The match is on track to smash Adelaide United's 23,039 state soccer attendance record at Adelaide Oval and cruise past the number of spectators at AAMI Stadium on the same night.

The Socceroos/New Zealand match kicks off just 50 minutes after Port Adelaide starts its clash with Carlton at West Lakes.

Football Federation Australia officials are confident the Socceroos will attract at least 30,000 fans to watch the team in Adelaide for the first time since 2004.

Port Adelaide has averaged 24,147 fans at AAMI this season while last year's clash against Carlton at the venue drew 30,228 spectators.

A bumper Adelaide Oval 36,000 sell-out crowd at the home of cricket would put the state in the mix to host future Socceroos' 2014 World Cup qualifiers and the possibility of holding prestigious AFC Asian Cup tournament matches in 2015.

Cant wait! 35k would be awesome and put us in contention to host some asian cup matches in 2015 as well as WC qualifiers. Regular international football in Adelaide is what we have been waiting for and we can stick it to the eastern states!

Meanwhile at AAMI Stadium......10k???

38,000 is for concerts mate. Most tickets able to be sold is 36,000, unless the playing surface is used for patrons (such as concerts etc.)

Anything you have read that states 38,000 is indeed wrong as DOC pointed out. I KNOW, because I WORK THERE :!:

cant believe that less than ten years on and with a weaker team we are going to get nearly 4 times the crowd we had last time we played them here, and that was a qualifier!

Yup, only 21,000. Every game played at AO has had a smaller crowd than the previous one (I think, someone will correct me I'm sure). True, the weather was ... um ... challenging, and half the team was 'out with injury', but it's still our national team and it'll be another 20 years before we get to see them again. When are the football authorities going to wake up to AO being a poor excuse for a football stadium (unless you play the local code ... and live in the seventies, even for AFL it's rubbish).

We paid $35 for our tickets (the cheapest coz we couldn't afford more), sat behind the goals, ie, behind a boom camera and, thanks to the sign hoardings around the ground, couldn't see the bottom of the player's shorts when they were near the goal line - this improved slightly when the people behind us got the tom tits and went elsewhere, so we moved up a level into their seats. Even so, when one of our players went down in the second half, we weren't aware of it until the ref bent down to see how he was (couldn't see him at all). Thanks to the distance to the pitch, I couldn't read player's names at all and my son couldn't once they got near the halfway line. Thanks to the low level and distance, the game was foreshortened such that neither of us could get a real feel for the game past the half way line.

And it flamin' rained hard in the second half - I blame Blatter for that (loved the Blatter Out banner).

Seriously, it was a shocking football experience and I wouldn't blame people for not coming back.

Having said all that, my son and I did enjoy it (he'd enjoy watching football played in the dark with one team in black and the other in navy blue) and although the younger players dropped the Socceroos standard noticeably, it was interesting watching them play, especially as NZ game us a good game.

Really though, $50 a ticket at Hindmarsh would make far more sense, even with its capacity of only 17,000 - it won't be long before that's all we'll get at AO.

So 9,000 people who possibly bought tickets didn't show up...? :)
