Sapsasa
Hi all,
Long time reader, first time poster. Was just curious to find out a bit more info about Sapsasa soccer, doesn't seem to be a whole lot written about it on here and there is also very limited information on the Sapsasa website.
My first question is how good is the standard? ie would the majority of Fed players try out? Also how many players is it typical to get out at the trials? (I realise it probably varies a lot especially for the country districts but I was mainly talking about the Metro areas). Are there a few dominant districts or is it a fairly even across the board?
I have heard that the carnival is run really well but it would be good to hear some first hand accounts/insights if anyone is currently or has previously been involved.
Cheers

From what I have heard (which isn't a lot) the carnival itself is run pretty well, I guess I am trying to gauge how much interest there is in it (and thus how high the standard is). I suspect there are probably a fair few players that don't/can't try out due to heavy club/state commitments and I bet there are a few junior coaches out there that probably do everything in their powers to convince players not to go out.

Their are two option for the kids
1/ Sapsasa state
2/ Sapsasa zone carnavial
No 1 is run poorly and no value.
No 2 is great for club and non club players they all go out
and play for fun no pressure just fun. the std of teams are average
but who cares, it's a great avent for all kids and well run.

Would the majority of districts be made up of both club and non-club players or just those where the leagues aren't as big/strong ie the really rural communities? You would think if the city districts are fielding non-club players there must be a heck of a lot of club players that don't try out.best wrote:Their are two option for the kids

Remember we are talking about U13s here. Players are still developing and finding their appropriate level. The players are chosen to trial by their school, and not on whether they play for a club or not.The Shot-Cross wrote:Would the majority of districts be made up of both club and non-club players or just those where the leagues aren't as big/strong ie the really rural communities? You may have a kid whose chosen sport is footy, but also still has some pretty good football skills.
Some of the northern clubs will be more dominated by E & D club players than FFSA.
Looking back at Son of Manalishi's North Adelaide SAPSASA squad from 2008, at least 12 of the 14 were club players. The two I'm not sure of I know are playing E & D these days, while at least 8 of the 12 are still playing FFSA.

Re: Sapsasa
I would have expected some of the districts like Upper Eyre Peninsula and Riverland etc to have a few footy kids etc to fill the gaps in their squads, but only because you would expect numbers of kids trialling would be lower due to the size of the schools, the local leagues and probably things like the extra travel/accommodation costs involved.Green_Manalishi wrote:Remember we are talking about U13s here. You would think that the metro districts probably have at least 10 primary schools to draw on (with probably a couple of classes in each) so you are talking about at least 500 (?) kids. I guess I assumed that there would be enough kids in this 500 or so that have played soccer from an early age/still play to fill a squad and aside the odd "freakish all rounder", that might play footy or not play for whatever reason, you would think they would have enough club players to fill the team and the majority of these would be better than non-players.
But going back to my original query, is it a case of the kids at higher levels not trialling? How many kids were at your sons trials?

Possibly 30-35. Thankfully it wasn't open slather like STIC trials these days. From memory the schools could nominate 5 players, I don't remember any trying to send more, and in the case of our school I think we only sent three. The Shot-Cross wrote:But going back to my original query, is it a case of the kids at higher levels not trialling? One kid didn't make the squad because of discipline issues at school - he's at AIS now

George Asliandis was in the 2007 squad - he's playing first team at Comets now.
These days with greater emphasis on FFSA Skillaroos and State teams (I presume that's what you mean by 'higher level') it may be harder for some players to commit to SAPSASA as well.
Back in 2008 this wasn't really an issue. If some prima donna didn't bother trialling for SAPSASA (and I really don't think there were many) it was their loss.

Yeah that was what I suspected too, I remember in my day (which was a while back) everyone wanted to be a part of it, but perhaps now it will take a bit of a back seat for some of the kids at the highest level.Green_Manalishi wrote:Possibly 30-35. My Sons SAPSASA Zone team last year had every player picked from a Fed. Club.
They are in an E&D Zone.
I would suggest that 90% of Kids in the SAPSASA Zone teams are from Fed. Clubs.
For memory around 40 kids trialed most from Fed clubs.
Well run event, Kids seem to enjoy it.

Hey Best i'd like to know your reasonings for the first part of your option. I may be wrong but i think you will find the majority of the kids in the Skillaroos came from that SAPSASA state squad last year.
So before the boys got together this year they had already been playing and training together long before Skillaroos.
I would have thought the benefits and values are clear.....

Is there a noticeable difference in the three divisions? Who are usually the stronger districts?

Hey Besty i was just looking at the players in the last 10 years who have represented SA in that SAPSASA tournament, can you guess how many have gone on to play for State, SASI and AIS........WELL
Re: Sapsasa
TBH this year has been my first involvement for my lad in SAPSASA and to date he has enjoyed both lots of trials (state and district). And for him its always been about the opportunity to mix with players from other clubs, play under different coaching styles etc as a learning experience. Whether he makes it into the final squads is also a new experience for him. I'd love to see the cost of these things lower, but given the funding seems to come from DECS, its unlikely to be an appropriate option.best wrote:Their are two option for the kids

The only frustrating part to me is how parents are able to know about all of these "squads". I know half the parents in my lads team didn't know about district trials in their local school zones, and the messages supposedly come through the schools. Same with other squads through FFSA or whoever it may be.... without publicising these things it only leads to rumours and questions.
Re: Sapsasa
That would be because with SAPSASA it is not normally open trials. The school is the one that nominates players.tobisaiah wrote:TBH this year has been my first involvement for my lad in SAPSASA and to date he has enjoyed both lots of trials (state and district). When my son played SAPSASA it was considered an honour to make the team...in fact one of his former teammates was in the AU youth team last year and is currently training with AU.
To make a country SAPSASA team you don't even have necessarily played the sport so there is a massive difference between the different levels...

Thanks for the replies all. From what I can gather it seems as though it sounds like a pretty positive, worthwhile tournament still and from my day I agree that the chance to train and play with a different squad under a different coach was a great experience/opportunity. My nephew is year 5 this year and I think he is pretty keen to give it a crack next year.
On the coaching, is it mainly teachers or do they employ/enlist coaches?

The tournament is quite well run with accredited ref's for each game. Any opportunity for kids to play at a competitive level is good if you ask me. Teams are put into divisions and from there they can get relegated or promoted. Coaches are most normally teachers and therefore play the game with giving all kids equal opportunity. From what I remember the Div 1, Div 2 and Div 3 boys champions played some decent football.

A zone I am well aware of appears to be all FFSA players most of them U13 JPL plus a couple of U12 JPL from a large turn out of boys (would have been over 50) so would think the standard would be fairly good and the interest is obviously there... maybe its the week off school
Have no idea the format of the competition.. anyone with any knowledge re this ..would like to get to at least a couple of the games.

Correct, so the North West Zone U/12s team are all the FED boys from which teams?
What teams would fall into this Zone, how does it work etc.

They are mostly federation players that play for the relevant school teams - There are U12 boys from Raiders, Adelaide City, West Adelaide, Western Strikers, Birkala, Pirates (I think) etc. The U11 team is similar though called U12B as they will be playing 11 v 11 on a full size pitch.
It is completely separate from SAPSASA which is as I understand purely based by zone area of all the primary schools and is for year 6 & 7 kids.

The Toros 13s played one of them tonight, they called themselves the north western zone U/12s, not a bad bunch of kids.
