I disagree mtgambier ranger Coaches Live & Die by there Results not having the players but getting the best out of those players you have isn't nearly enough.
If a coach hasn't got the players to get the Results it his job to get the players to then get results. When a Club employs a Coach they will employ the Coach that they believe will win the most games, not the Coach who has the most knowledge & who will communicate & man manage the best...

I do agree that a coach will be judged by the result they get particularly by those outside of the club. but as I said Bob Clarke hasn't (i will stand corrected) won a division one championship but is still regarded as one of the best coaches the Downs has had. Also Paul Simpson at Ingle Farm has never won a division one championship. But has turned that club around starting in 2004 when winning 3 and eventually gaining promotion to Division 1 not to metnion his Achievements at Manchester United Supporters. I personally have had some great coaches but due to one thing or another have not been able to achieve the ultimate prize

Marty Craig 1990-1991-1992 -1993 player(sometimes)/coach
Bold represents Division 2 winners or promotion years.
Unfortunately not around for Bobby Hogg or Alan Mottram's coaching stints.
Motts would have to be at the top due to team performances under his "reign".
Motts certainly would have to be Swannsong I'm sure the X2 Div.1 Championships Back2Back are more important to your club that the rest of the Clubs Achivements put together..
You can't get Division 1 back to backs from Division 2.....Motts did both...
However, Marty Craig did take up the reigns when the Downs had just been relegated to Division 3....and got them back to Division 1 in 3 seasons (+ a Consolation Cup win)....
mountgambier rangers - Bob Clarke was at the helm when we were promoted in 1981...Downs were relegated in 1982 and just survived a drop to Division 3 in 1983.

I agree with Motts but Lisbon Lion said Bob Clarke and I was just using him to make a point that for different clubs and different persons a good coach does not necessarily have to be the most successful
We can all figure out who is the most successful coach just by going through the clubs history/results. That's easy. But with the question being best coach, surely man management skills, development of players, knowledge of the game etc comes in to play along with results.
I know from my experiences that the best coach (coach i would say helped me the most) wasn't the most successful.
WHY DO THEY CALL IT OVALTINE? I MEAN ITS ROUND, WHY DONT THEY CALL IT ROUNDTINE.

One thing that is hard to separate from whether a coach is good or not...is their ability to attract players or the networks they have....sometimes it comes down to timing...player availability.
It also helps if you have a strong club and committee backing the coach....and finances do play a role !
My favourite coach at the Downs was Roy Ainscough, he had respect, combined both experienced players and youthful players, attracted a few good player...but for me personally it was the fact that he entrusted myself (18 at the time) with the first team goalkeeping responsibilty and encouraged me enough for me to gain confidence...never missed a game in the 2 years he was at the helm. We won Division 2 and finished 4th in Division 1.

surely ur influence with barrie at brahma is what has turned him into the coach he is today!
My influence can only go so far. A little remark here and there on selection night is the best I can hope for. Certainly worked this week with me telling him to drop Chaos. Of course he'll tell you it's due to the paper cut he has taped up on his noggin'

This was basic for Barrie to realize that all this time he has been carrying me and that there are far better players to line up in the 14

He wasnt the most successful because he wasted most of his time helping you.

Results at some clubs might be avoiding relegation and having a healthy financial situation.
Every club has different expectations ! They just like to be successful with results too !
Roger Nicholls/Geoff Armstrong. Roger's calmness and his communication skills were/are second to none.
Earl Pudler - We may never have seen eye to eye, but i still respected this bloke and still do. Taking over from the Nicholls/Armstrong era and improving on it, what more can you say.
Marty Craig - I would have walked through walls for this bloke. He made you believe that you were 10 foot tall and bulletproof. He got the maximum out of every player.
Alan Mottram - Coached me as jnr never ranted and raved, still doesn't. He has the ability to attract good players
In my time at Adelaide Uni (2004-present) it would have to be Scott Rhysca, his first year they finished 2nd in the league (to a very good Comets side) and made the 1/4 finals of the cup and in the second year (my first) we finished 3rd (after being 9th at the midpoint of the season) and made the semi finals of the cup.
Outside of the results he produced he created a very good team spirit in the squad and got the most out of the players he had available.
Also probably the only player I know that could take the pi$$ on the pitch and play in pub shoes!

He was almost better in those shoes than he was in boots!
