Dear Parents,
As you would have read recently in the Advertiser, the structure of academy football in South Australia is changing, which influences our Elite Academy. Due to Adelaide United Football Club’s recent change in ownership, it has been a slow process getting the information out to you, so we apologise that we have not been able to send this letter earlier.
The FFA have created, as part of their National Curriculum, a program called “Skillaroos” which is an academy for 12 – 14 year olds, and therefore fills in the age group of our last years Elite Academy. As a club we are supportive of the FFA’s Skillaroos program, and are adapting our Academy plans accordingly.
Moving forward we have decided to continue with the AUFC Development Academy, as well as creating a Youth Academy squad for 15 – 17 year olds. The aim of creating a Youth Academy is to nurture the talent of boys who will be potential players for our National Youth League squad in the future.
We are extremely sorry that we have to withdraw our Elite Academy program, as it was an excellent experience for all involved, but the FFA have created the curriculum, and we won’t step on their toes. Our future plans involve us creating more elite teams, and we look forward to seeing the boys again in a few years when they are old enough for selection into our Youth Academy. We are always on the look out, and we hope to see them improve and develop as footballers.
Please feel free to keep in contact with us.
Kind regards,
Michael Valkanis
Academy Director

Community program starts week commencing 18th April, and this year we have extended the age groups for our Academy Program, from 6yrs of age to 16yrs of age.
We are looking to improve on last year with our Head Coach, Rini Coolen attending some sessions to identify talent and give his input into the coaching sessions. Current A-League players will also be taking some of the program sessions throughout the IGA & Adelaide United Academy 22 week program.
The Development and Identification program will deliver a professional skill based program focusing on developing and improving technical ability. Players will be encouraged to reach their personal potential and stay committed to the game and club they love.
Last year, our elite Academy program was the 12 – 14 year old age group, as it is a very important age to work with especially when it comes to wanting to develop them technically, as it’s the ages where they work to perfect their skills. The work we did with this group was rewarding, and enjoyed watching the boys develop under out program. The FFA have introduced the Skillaroos program nationally which will now cover this age group.
Our Elite Academy Program is now for participants 15-17 years of age, so we can work with talent that we identify, and potentially select players for our NYL team. We will work alongside coaches from local clubs, and also through our community programs, to identify participants in that specific age group to participate in our Elite Academy.
Michael Valkanis, Academy Director commented, “We are very excited to commence our IGA & Adelaide United Academy for 2011. We have full support from our Owners & Head Coach who believe in the development of South Australian talent & giving local boys & girls the opportunity to reach their potential in football. The club has put in place plans & structures to fulfil our long term vision to have home grown talent in our A-League squad in the future. This doesn’t happen overnight and will take long term commitment from everyone involved to make it a reality.”
Registrations for the IGA & Adelaide United Academy are still available click on the link below to complete the registration form or contact our office on 8340 3000 for further details.

Re: Adelaide United academy - 2011 and beyond
Still not clear on what is happening with the "Elite Academy" or "AU Youth Academy". Do potential participants need to register for AU Academy or will players be selected separately? If so by who and when? How will AU balanace needs of club, player and AU? Will they play competitively or only train? Will the academy coincide with National Youth League or FFSA season? Will it cost same as IGA & AU Academy ot be subsidised in some way? Can some-one give a bit more info please?johnydep wrote:http://www.adelaideunited.com.au/default.aspx?s=newsdisplay&id=39474 wrote:IGA & Adelaide United Academy

Re: Adelaide United academy - 2011 and beyond
I was quite interested too (as was Redson)...but the $764.50 fees and training at 4.30pm on a weeknight made it impossible.
My team are not in my good books for a few reasons such as this lately.....

Whose redson firstly? and yes I know the fees are quite high but it is better than some other academies around the place. One of my questions is what days will the elite squad train and how often? I turned 16 not long ago and am very interested seems like a great way to progress.redmum wrote:I was quite interested too (as was Redson)...but the $764.50 fees and training at 4.30pm on a weeknight made it impossible.

Anyway the 8-16 year olds train at Modbury 4.30pm Monday
Flinders Uni 4.30pm Tuesday
B27 Park Terrace 4.30pm Wednesday
The Elite Academy for over 16 year olds, I believe (I am not certain) hold trials, which I'm sure the links will be posted when available.

hmmm the times quite a bugger whats the length of the sessions? Also do you think that this would help to make it easier in getting selected for the elite academy for say next year or later this year?
Re: Adelaide United academy - 2011 and beyond
I believe it is 22 weeks for an hour and a half, with two school holiday day sessions included at Hindmarsh Stadiumpuyol5 wrote: ohh how didnt i spot that out haha

Shame, but no-one in our family finishes work early enough.
Exactly.
As I said, stupid time for schoolkids to have training, considering they would all have to driven there by a parent, who, (to afford the fees), would have to be working and could not get them there by 4.30.
Someone at AU is not working in most family's best interests if they want kids involved in this program....

The Elite Academy last year started its training times at 4.30 at various grounds through out the year from Croydon, Strikers and Santos and i can only think of a few times when kids didnt show up to training, on most occassions all showed up, like it says its Elite and where there is a will theres a way..car pooling was one.
Re: Adelaide United academy - 2011 and beyond
Not when your child finishes school at 3.30, lives and schools an hour away from the city and has no one else living around that would car pool him.Cruyff wrote:The Elite Academy last year started its training times at 4.30 at various grounds through out the year from Croydon, Strikers and Santos and i can only think of a few times when kids didnt show up to training, on most occassions all showed up, like it says its Elite and where there is a will theres a way..car pooling was one.
At the moment, I have had to adjust my shifts at work and make the mad dash straight from work to get him to his training at 5.30pm.
4.30 at a location an hour away is an impossibility...

There is no excuses, yes its a pain but there are ways around it... 2 boys from the riverland made every session last year. On some occasions they travelled by bus down to Adelaide.......and had one of the parents pick them up.

So did they skip school to attend on training days?
Most schools finish between 3.15-3.30, how on earth did they make it from the Riverland into town in an hour???????
Plus the fact I would not send my 8 year old son on a bus as he would have to change at Modbury Interchange to get another bus to any of those places....as a responsible parent I could not allow him to do that.
So yes there are excuses-and quite reasonable ones at that :?
