Government backs Greek shakeup
Associated Press
ATHENS, Greece -- The government is backing a shakeup of Greece's soccer league as prosecutors begin an investigation into allegations of corruption and attempted match-fixing.
The government has requested the Greek Football Association intervene and take authority from the Superleague, the body that currently runs the country's top league with little regulation.
The GFA has also been asked to consider using foreign referees for certain domestic games.
"The Superleague is not suitable to organize the championship, given the current circumstances, the way it works and the behavior of some of its senior members," the government's general secretary for sport, Panos Bitsaxis, wrote. "The government respects the self-governing nature of football. ... But the government will take the decisions necessary to restore the credibility of professional football."
He warned that state-controlled betting company OPAP could withdraw funding for soccer unless serious reforms are made.
On Friday, prosecutors began hearing testimony from referees after a prominent lawyer handed judicial authorities what he said were taped conversations providing evidence of attempts to bribe a Greek referee and others.
The lawyer on Wednesday said the allegations included a failed attempt to influence an Aug. 5 Europa League match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Greek league leader Olympiakos.
Olympiakos flatly denied the allegations, while other clubs applauded the government's initiative.
AEK Athens wrote an open letter to Prime Minister George Papandreou, comparing the soccer scandal to the lack of public accountability that helped create Greece's financial crisis.
"Professional Greek football is rotten, an area in which parasitic and criminal elements are served by an orgy of corruption with the complete inability of football institutions to react," AEK wrote.
"It is a product of the pathologies of Greek society that have brought us to the state of collapse that we live in today: lawlessness, nepotism, money laundering, tax dodging, corruption, blackmail, and the assurance of impunity provided by a web of diffused complicity."
Investigative magistrate Constantine Simitzoglou, heading the soccer corruption probe, is due to hear testimony Monday from more acting and former referees, sports reporters and the head of the Greek FA, Sofoklis Pilavios.

Deserves a topic of it's own, a lot of fallout to come. Hopefully we see a calciopoli style sweep out and a certain club relegated to 4th div for their sins.

In Greece, Greeks are: (correct me where i'm wrong here)
- egotostical, check.
- turn everything into a pissing contest, check.
- are overly passionate about sports (football), check.
- require you to pay fakelaki (brown envelope) to get do anything, check.
- are corrupt in business and politics, check.
- businessmen and politicians get overly involved in football clubs, check.
Now, to consider that Greece has never had a major football corruption scandal. In spite of scandals in Italy, England, Germany and most of continental europe over the last 30 or so years etc.
Are you a betting man, pretty long odds to suggest Greek football is 100% clean. The tapes and DVDs will soon prove otherwise.
Re: Greek Football Corruption
Where is it exactly that i mentioned where there wasnt corruption in Greek football??? With all due respect, whilst i may have shit for brains as you put it, you need to wipe the shit from your eyes and read my post properly All i was alluding to was that a corrupt lot trying to investigate another corrupt lot aint going to solve anything in the long term but rather all its going to achieve is putting a stop in the short term at least, to the widening gap of Olys title cabinet with the rest of the clubs. If you can honestly sit there and tell the world that Oly is the only team with corrupt ways in Greece and that the rest of of the big clubs (including your innocent AEK ) are angels sent from heaven, then we both know indeed you may also have shit somewhere else other than just in your eyes LOL @ you honestly thinking that the people investigating the corrupt Oly arent just as corrupt themselves. Gee whiz, i think it was even you who alluded to the generalisation of all Greeks & Greece being corrupt Ase me re Kop, polles malakiesThe Kop wrote:Col, if you think there is zero corruption in football then - i mean this with all due respect - you have sh*t for brains.COLOSSUS wrote:You mean, change Greek football with " the world" and you have a more accurate assessment. Lawlessness - Absolute bollocks, there is no Anarchy in Greece so cant take that into consideration."It is a product of the pathologies of Greek society that have brought us to the state of collapse that we live in today: lawlessness, nepotism, money laundering, tax dodging, corruption, blackmail, and the assurance of impunity provided by a web of diffused complicity."
Nepotism - Plenty of that going on but tell me in which civilised country a "job for the boys" dont happen in??? Nothing new or different here.
Money Laundering - Refer to nepotism, happens in every civilised and uncivilised country, next!!!
Tax dodging - We gave tax evasion to the world, of course we are going to be the best at it, dirrrrrrrrr
Corruption - Happening since the snake corrupted Eve, good luck trying to stop it, next
Blackmail - Yes there are so called "bikie" gangs in Greece as well, so what???
Nothing new here peoples, its obvious that this corruption investigation is going to be an Oly v the Rest of Greece thingo and hopefully our (OLY) president will have more money than the Rest of Greece team to win the battle which will come down to who presents the fattest "FAKELAKI"

If one eyed gavroi are already trying to rationalise the situation instead of dismissing it when it hasn't reached any kind of boiling point, yet...it's become that obvious to everyone!
Dunno if you were being sarcastic with your lawlessness point, lack of blue text!!....

Believe what you want, there is no disorder or lawlessness in Greece. Please show me where there is, and dont show me a few pics where some protesters smash windows of shops because thats been happening in Greek protest marches since Jesus was a little boy and probably even before Jesus id suggest
As for you smiff, you must be the most naive person in the world to claim the rest of my claims as "factually incorrect" because only someone in denial could possibly suggest that there isnt Nepotism, money laundering, tax dodging, corruption and blackmail in every other civilised and non civilised country alike on this planet. Give me the address, ill send some people in blue uniforms with blue and white hats called police. They are supposed to be friendly, they should help you escape

There is disorder and lawlessness in most parts of Greek society. It isn't just located in Greek football.
End of story.

In Italy there is a trial going at the moment, showing evidence that what we did was to complain about certain allocated refs and say we'd prefer others instead (no different from and AU fan not wanting Breeze to do our games)and far more interestingly evidence that Inter and other clubs did the same thing.
I just hope its a less corrupt trial to find corruption then we had.
Re: Greek Football Corruption
Thankyou Baggio, my point exactly. What will one corrupt lot investigating another corrupt lot going to achieve??? Absolutely nothing more than stripping one club of a couple championships and then giving all other teams one chance of winning one themselves before that club gains promotion and starts winning them 1 after another.....againBAGGIO 15 wrote:Hopefully they find evidence first.Nikos_Goumas wrote:Olympiakos deserve to be treated like Juve in Italy a few seasons ago. Highlighted in RED as this person has since been confirmed as Evangelos Marinakis, the chairmain of Olympiakos. Two of Greek soccer's most controversial figures, the president of Olympiakos Volou, Achilleas Beos, and the owner of Kavala, Makis Psomiadis, are among those accused of organizing an extensive match-fixing network that authorities started cracking on June 22.
Police released the names of the 10 men arrested on Wednesday in connection with 41 suspicious soccer games during the last three seasons, as well as the names of five more men that remain at large, while the extent of the scandal of match-fixing in the Greek game, dubbed «Calciopoulos,» is yet to be made known.
The 10 men arrested are Beos, the son of Psomiadis, Stavros, who is president of Kavala, the owner of second-division club Ilioupoli, Giorgos Tsakogiannis, former Ilioupoli president Nikos Chalkos, the coach of second-division side Ethnikos Asteras, Nikos Pantelis, former player Dimitris Zavandias, as well as two bookmakers, Andreas Dimopoulos and Vassilis Karakoulias, player agent Thanasis Dotsis, and Nikos Zamanis, identified as Beos’s bodyguard.
All 10 appeared before the prosecutor at noon on June 23, while Beos claimed he was ill, before being taken to the hospital for a short while. All are likely to be detained until Monday, when they will appear before a prosecutor again.
The five men the police have arrest warrants for are Makis Psomiadis, the coach of second-division Levadiakos Yiannis Papacostas, Ilioupoli player Michalis Nikolopoulos, Greek federation official Yiannis Papadopoulos and bookmaker Vassilis Geortsiakos.
The prosecutor has also filed charges against another 70 people who have not been named, but rumors are raging that they concern very well-known names from Greek sports and society in general.
According to unconfirmed reports, the list includes the head of a major Super League club, whose voice is allegedly heard on one of the 85 CDs in the prosecutor’s possession. The suspect had been involved in the fixing of his team's match against another major club this season and was asking for the protection of the game’s referee.
Police spokesman Thanassis Kokkalakis stated that more arrests are in the pipeline.
The charges concerning fraudulent betting, money laundering, participation in a criminal gang, and even possession of guns would bring prison terms ranging from five years to life, while the clubs found guilty will face relegation and a ban from European competitions.
